Yes, unfortunately, I have read the posts in this thread, including your posts, which have some value. But there's been too much verbage, such as mentioning Gen 5 NVME drives which few people can even implement right now. Most of us have already said too much.

Why don't we say it like it is? There's some white-knighting going on here. And it's a bit silly.

A damsel in distress hangs her hanky out of a castle window. On the hanky is writing that says: "Help, help, I need some help picking a $50 NVME!

A bunch of white knights congregate to discuss how to rescue the fair maiden (or maybe not a maiden). Whatever...

And then there's a lot of needless discussion about how to do that and appear to be the best knight, etc.
Sometimes we need to laugh at our own ridiculousness.

It's just that the tone of your soliloquy seemed abrasive, and while having admitted there was a lot of verbiage already, the post also contributed a lot more verbiage that wasn't really cohesive. Though, admittedly, I also recognize the tongue-in-cheek manner in which you presented a lot of the anecdotal stuff..

But if you scroll through most of our posts here (this thread), the vast majority of us do not look at it as a 'damsel in distress' scenario, but rather, a user asking for frank and honest opinions. If you scroll through my own posts you'll see I treat most requests the same way every time, not differing too much from user to user, request to request, issue to issue. The same applies to 99% of the responses to users asking for help / advice / whatever from the majority of our users here, across all the threads.

I agree with your comment about my abrasiveness. Actually it's more ranting than abrasiveness. And I did contribute to the verbiage, as you also did. But I don't agree with the idea that there hasn't been white-knighting, possibly even by you. And the comment about your consistency in your posts reminds me of a college professor that would flunk everyone on the first mid-term test. I asked him about that and he said, "I want you to know that I'm fair to everyone, I flunk everybody on the first midterm. I treat everybody equally!". That's not fairness. I also don't believe you've read 99% of the responses (in threads) to even be able to validate your last comment about the majority of the forum users. I'm not swayed by your 4,070 posts regardless of what threads they are in.

Try to be honest with yourself and others. I'm certainly done with this thread, as you should be also.

I've read many of johnIgalt's posts in the past and have found our dear Antidisestablishmentarianist just as ready and willing to help anyone here seeking assistance regardless of whether they're a prince, or a princess, or just a frog like yours truly. In fact, I heard a recent rumour that John secretly desires to be a non-conformist like everybody else, but he'll have to duel me for that title with a rose in his teeth first. ha ha ha!

I can't stop laughing. Perhaps it has something to do with my installing Win 11 on this non-compliant old X99 platform on a 1 TB stick of Crucial NVMe only to discover that it was a complete waste of time. I'm back to my good ole fashioned SSD because my OCD wasn't vanquished. Looks like I'm going to have to move the SSD back to my HBA card after all. :::sigh:::

Jeezus, I don't even want to let anybody know that I bought WD SN850 drives when I built my rig, and then after testing felt 100% happy with them. I'm sure these aren't mostest bestest drives ever.

Now I regret even getting into PC's in the first place. That's it, I'm sticking with my apple devices where the storage is soldered on and everybody is stuck with the only option provided by Apple.

I'll swap you for those SN850's if you like. I think I have one or two Western Digital mechanical hard drives kicking around that haven't died yet.

This thread is amusing in many ways.

Many have their likes and preferences (as well as dislikes) so there will be (are) many "opinions" as what's best to get.

I'll say this.... I've never bought anything solely based on "numbers" or what I call "plots & charts". I simply look at what's out and go by personal experience, reviews, and user comments; extrapolate from that and buy what I think is the best bang for the buck based on performance and reliability. Additionally, I place reliability and performance above price. Here I've found the adage "you get what you pay for" is truer than not.

For me, I tend to stick with what I know unless the product/company has proven unreliable. For stuff I'm not familiar with, I research and base my decision 1) experiences, basic tech knowledge, and most importantly... the veracity / knowledge of the reviewer/end user.

Also, that someone posted something on the net or in a forum does not always make it true. We all see plenty of posts where a user blames their lack of understanding on an item or OS, when it's clear as day, the issue is.... the end user. I dealt with such a post a few months back here.

Point... while posts of "difficulties people have when either cloning or restoring an image to Samsung drives", may appear, it doesn't mean it's a standard issue. I (and many others) use Samsung NVMe drives in our builds without any issues. In fact, I cloned my Samsung 950 Pro NVMe to my Samsung 970 Pro NVMe drive when I upgraded the 950 to the 970 in my main rig. I simply put the 970 in another NVMe slot on the board and cloned the OS drive (950) to it. Removed the 950, placed the 970 in its place and booted to the OS zero issues!

There's also the FUD that an NVMe drives can't be seen in the BIOS, but they certainly can if the motherboard natively supports them. Natively meaning the board has built in PCI MVMe ports on board.

Yes, in PCs anything can happen, but sometimes the wrong thing gets blamed because of lack of understanding. Additionally, do realize, if a motherboard does NOT natively support NVMe drives to the point where you need an add-in card for the drive... In most cases (also depending on card/driver) you may run into boot issues if you try to install an OS there. You can read and write to the drive, but as an OS... usually a no go.

I have zero interest in which drive or piece of hardware someone buys, I only suggest you buy based on facts and not shy away from a product based on false, misleading, or incomplete information.

My two cents.

if a motherboard does NOT natively support NVMe drives to the point where you need an add-in card for the drive... In most cases (also depending on card/driver) you may run into boot issues if you try to install an OS there.

It depends if the bios supports nvme boot. If it does there shouldn't be any problem booting via an adapter.

I never said all. I said those asking for help / advice / whatever (by which I mean asking for help, troubleshooting, and opinions on hardware and / or software replacement. NOT the lounge channels, etc, where the games are played, and such.

Furthermore, I know the composition of the replies by the vast majority of people here as I've read more than a few hundred by the regular ones that are here offering their advice, troubleshooting, and assistance to others users week in and week out. They are not going to be flaky in one thread, and spot on helpful in another, there is a consistency among all of the people here in their responses.

If there wasn't, do you really think this place would have the traffic that it does?
