I thought I already told you how to do it. You just download the app, install, and click 'run'. It's so easy a child could do it.


Someone here might even have the d-load to the ad free version but it's no biggy because you can always uninstall it after you're done with it.

My 2.5" Samsung 860 EVO SSD...





It has a setting for NVMe SSDs as well...

Those kind of measurements are a bit of fun, but it is hard to know what it really means.

For example this is an old crucial mx300 on a b365 motherboard.



The writes are higher than the pic just posted for samsung 860. What does that mean irl ? A different motherboard might have given different results.

I have no way of measuring that, but if true could be considerably less power hungry than the Samsung 860

Though the samsung 860 being mlc has a higher rated endurance than this old crucial tlc disk.

And sometimes they don't make a bit of a difference. I remember helping somebody once who also had a 2TB SN850 like I have and while mine hit ~7030MB/sec...theirs was only hitting like ~6700MB/sec and they were all concerned as to why my numbers were "so much higher" than theirs. I was like like, if you are over 6500 or so, you are solidly in the gen 4 spec max speed area, and I wouldn't spend another 2 seconds trying to figure out why you aren't at 100% of the theoretical max.

Heck even though I have a drive that can do 7000MB/sec, most of my games are on a drive that tops out around 560MB/sec because the difference is almost imperceivable for these games. By the numbers, one would think it would be almost 14x as fast, but it's not.

The real advantage with NVMe speed is in data transfer i.e. file writes, media creation, rendering etc. It also has practical use at the commercial level in the way of number crunching (and yes, I'm aware that GPUs do the actual 'crunching') and non-volatile memory express uses less energy than standard hard drives. Commercial servers using NVMe will certainly be much faster. In gaming, loading times will be faster and of course boot times should also be improved, but it's not going to make much difference in FPS or overall gaming performance.

NVMe is really about saving time. The domestic user can't help but to notice a difference in speed in file transfers and/or copying data from A to B. So, although it can be very handy, like anything else, it has its limits. The one thing I don't like about NVMe is that little screw. I wish it were as easy to install and remove as a simple SATA SSD. Anyway, user preference prevails. Same as it ever was.

Loading times may be faster, but not necessarily. For example, load times for a couple of my games when on NVME were like 12 seconds, and 12.7 seconds when moved to a SATA based SSD. Yes, it's a difference, but not a significant amount or what an average user would probably imagine their performance increase would be when they benchmark the drive and see it's 14x faster.


i wish it was easier to pop in an NVMe and take it out. I liked having multiple sata drives in my box and simply connect the one I wanted to boot via a sata data cable. With NVMe, it's usually under a GPU, and then maybe a heat sink and on my particular mobo, for my 2nd NVMe slot I have to remove a shroud over the x570 chipset to get the drive out.

I'm right with you there. SATA SSDs are so user friendly and I'm surprised they couldn't have devised a method to make NVMe even mores so. The only method I know of to make the job somewhat easier is to purchase a card. Even then most of those cards also require a screw to hold the memory in place and of course, there's still the matter of a heat sink. Just how hot swappable this silicon can be is another matter altogether. I still like my bays.

I haven't found a need for SSDs faster than SATA.
I guess maybe if it was job related?

But for a home computer, SATA SSD is plenty fast enough for me.

This is another reason I like my notebooks. Everything is just so accessible. I keep reading that MBs (almost all) have the
NVMes under something or other. Why couldn't the MB makers have at least the most used parts more accessible to the
users. They do it for the GPUs and Memory, why not NVMes?

A lot of the newer mobos are coming with these tool-less clips that you just spin and it captures the end of the M.2.
All 4 of the NVMe's on my board are secured by these clips. Makes it a bit easier getting the in or out.
My older board uses those dang little screws.

They should put the M.2 connectors, facing upwards.
They could put a bunch of them in a row.

Probably wouldn't need heat sinks either.
They could put the connectors right in front of an intake fan, somewhere.

You could put 6 of 'em right here, for example... standing upright.




The center, front intake fan would be blowing right across them.

You could always slot them into a box, like a PCIe snap-module. No screws required, plug and play. They do it with SD to USB already.

Or put the SSD edge connector on the long side of the SSD (like a RAM stick).
Then have SSD slots, like RAM slots.

But as others have said... they way they did it is... stooopid.


But even standing upright... NVMe SSDs are just a hair over three inches tall and under one inch wide.

Thank you. They both look good too - they are good finds. My new (used) 4 year old HP Pavilion 14 has arrived though and checked out and all fine. I went back to finding a used one the same model as my current one - which is fairly upgradeable. As I'd already bought the ram. It's my fourth attempt at getting one of these - and this one is working fine and in good condition and I only paid £140.

So - I took the back off and put the new ram in - so it's upgraded to 16gb ram. But can't swap the ssd - yet - for the hynix one - because the screw holding the current ssd in is completely stripped! It has clearly been changed before. I've tried all the usual ways of getting it out - rubber band, flat head screw driver, small pliers - but no luck. So I've left the current ssd in for now and will probably now buy a dremel - to turn it into a flat head screw. Always wanted a dremel anyway lol. I saw a video of someone doing that on a motherboard screw, covering the whole motherboard with plastic and using a small engraving tool.

If the worst comes to the worst the laptop has a space for a sata drive. So still can't put the Hynix in yet. Although I might try it in my current laptop instead as it's been a while now. (Patiently twiddles thumbs).

I also have a spare screw from my old defunct model, if this screw gets wrecked. The main thing is to get it out.
