That actually happens. Some of these older, reputable units are sought after by collectors. People seeking the '57 Chevy equivalents in a PC world. I happen to know one of these 'collectors' but I am not one myself.

Ok so I've bought another used one, identical model to my current one - third attempt! This time it's from Cash Converters - a place Bree has mentioned. £189. 10th generation 14" HP Pavilion. Hope this one doesn't have an iffy screen. Should be easy enough to return if there's a problem with it.

Yes a 15" screen is better but I find them too big for laptop use. 14" is just right for me. I also like the touchpad to be in the middle - which it is on most 14" laptops (or near enough) but on 15" ones it's way over to the left. That's my old RSI again - I have to watch my wrist position.

It wasn't just the screen size on the one that's gone back - it was just very flimsy - the usb ports were far too tight, the touchpad was the worst I've used for a long time and very stiff with a lot of travel.

Originally I was just looking for an identical "spare" to my current 4 year old laptop - so I've gone back to that plan. I'm not sure there are any new ones I actually like. I mentioned this on another post, but our teenager is getting a Surface Pro for his birthday/college, so I'll maybe have a go on that and see if I like the keyboard as that also has a small touchpad. But getting another one would cost a lot! I just really don't get on with the large touchpads and shallow key travel on new ones.

I just hope the next one is a good one. But I'm getting the impression that these newer thinner ones aren't as good at four years old. My first one packed up recently with hardware issues. I had another identical one which, while it is also four years old, has been sat unused for two years. So that is the one I have now - and I wanted to get another one as a spare. But two had issues at four years old (the two that had to go back) and I'm guessing any others of this model I find, will have had more use than this current one. I've usually kept laptops at least 8 or 9 years and just needed a new battery or something - so they seem not built to last somehow. Which is why I thought I'd get a new one. But gone back to the idea of another identical model. If I can find one that is fully working with no screen or hardware issues, then that will become my spare.

I like the model as it fits all my criteria for ergonomics etc. But it's a bit sad if they don't last much longer than four years.

Hi Hazel!
Yes, I know that not all of them are well built this is why, I put aside 100 every month towards a new notebook
every 5 years. I know not everyone can but, with this amount in hand , I can purchase a well built and respected
brand. Last summer, I bought a Surface laptop go 3 for my daughter ( I know, spoiled) and I was surprised at how
well this notebook is built. All metal. This is obviously too small for you because at 12.4 inch even I could not use
it. Only to say that, putting aside a few dollars towards something you now will last will pay for itself in the end.
I really hope this next one will be the one you have been patiently waiting for.

Thanks. It's not so much the cost, but finding something I like ha ha. I have another identical 10th generation HP Pavilion 14 on it's way currently so fingers crossed that one is ok. It was cheap. I'm considering having two or three "spares" of that generation which won't be used unless my main one fails - that should keep me going quite a long time! They won't be as old if not used. Unless Windows 11 stops working on 10th generation processors at some point. I can get 3 used laptops for the cost of a new one I don't like ha ha.

The surface laptop go 3 sounds good. Our boy (just about 16) is getting a Surface Pro 9, so also spoiled. I will check it out myself. OH doesn't do computers any more - he uses his phone and ipad for everything. He doesn't like typing. So my laptop has his files on as well (because sometimes an ipad just doesn't hack it).

Battery isn't too bad on my current four year old one - it never was great anyway - maybe 2 hours. But yes I hope the battery is ok.

Still not having much luck with the used laptops! The one from Cash Converters had a faulty hinge so is going back. But found another identical one on ebay - so fingers crossed. I had also bought an ex education 11.6" rugged Core i3 laptop from Back Market - which didn't arrive. Apparently it was no longer available which was annoying. They are low spec machines so finding a core M3 one was a find - most only have celeron or pentium. It was a kind of 11.6" rugged netbook equivalent running Windows 11.

Anyway found another one and Back Market gave me a discount code. So maybe that one will arrive. I have one fully working, four year old laptop, and want a couple of second hand spares. Which won't get used much unless needed. But one will also be a back up of the main one. That should keep me going quite a few years.

Current laptop has the 2tb Samsung 970 plus in. The question now is - whether to put the Hynix one in this laptop and the samsung in the spare one (assuming it arrives and is ok) or the other way round. Current laptop is running fine on the Samsung - if a little warm at times.

So hopefully a 10th generation core i5 HP Pavilion and an 8th generation HP Probook X360 11 M3 will arrive and be ok. I know the latter sounds a bit of an odd choice, but I like the idea of a portable, rugged touchscreen basic laptop as spare. Both were quite cheap - about £140 each. The rugged education ones were overpriced really - although it does have a sim card slot.
