HYPER-V Ubuntu 20.04 Quick Install Cannot be updated

Just messing with Hyper-V and have found it impossible to do a dist-upgrade (640+ packages now - Firefox was on version 75). I don't really care about this but wasted a lot of time trying to get this to work. MS should offer Ubuntu 21.04.

21.04 is relatively new out, not even official yet as LTS afaik. I cannot imagine MS are going to include 21.04 until it is LTS version.

Anyeay, it is simple enough to install 21.04 manually like any other Linux VM

I do not use quick create on 20.04 anyway as it has some issues that stop it getting into enhanced mode even though it has xrdp apparently.

It is quite easy to install 20.04 and add xrdp and pulseaudio (to get sound) but I have not tried it with 21.04. I bet something falls over with 21.04.

One of my big frustrations with Linux is you always seem to need a new patch each time a major upgrade for things like xrdp and pulseaudo.

Oh, I see what you guys are talking about, I've never used the Quick Create option in the upper right.

I've always found it easy to create a VM using the standard interface, and I've even used Powershell to create them in one click. You can use any ISO version you want doing it that way.

I downloaded 21.04 and installed it, and added xrdp to get enhanced mode and pulseaudio to get sound in about 30 mins.

Only problem I have is videos and sound are out of synch and my expertise in Linux is limited, so I have no idea how to fix it. That applies to 20.04 as well. However, if you are just listening to music, it is not a big deal.

I think you can change offset in tools like vlc for videos - yet to test it but for youtube etc, probably not.

Try Arch Linux -- simply run pacman -Syu and it all works seamlesly! -- even if you have VMWare installed and there's a new kernerel the relevant VMWare modules are automatically updated with the correct kernel headers etc. Whether you run it as a VM under HYPER-V or as a host -- works seamlessly on updates.

The initial install might be a bit tricky for people but there's excellent guides on the Web.

BTW whatever happened to Windows Sandbox or is it dead in the water now.
