I am satisfied with how I set up my 23H2, and everything works mostly well, so I am reluctant updating further. Possibly updating will require keeping some system files from 23H2 or even in some cases, earlier versions (thus it will be a downgrade for some components). Some (minor) functionality will be lost, and some additional really dirty workarounds would be needed.

I’m sure there are still folks out there still using XP who are reluctant to upgrade to W7 😏

Each to their own 👍

As long as you don't keep any personal information on your computer at all, or don't use the internet and don't do any web browsing, you'll be just fine.

To limit updates to Windows 11 version using Group Policy, you can set the policy under "Computer Configuration → Policies → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Windows Update → Windows Update for Business → Select the target Feature Update version" to specify 23H2. This will prevent automatic upgrades to newer versions like 24H2 or 25H2

I don't think I ever had automatic updates enabled, I did all updates via Windows Update Manager, a third-party app. The last update to my version will come on November, 10th...

Just make sure you keep Windows Defender or other third-party antivirus updated and of course be careful what you do online. Never just click OK on a popup window to get rid of it. You will immediately grant unauthorized access to your computer or annoying notifications. I wouldn't even click on Cancel, it could be a trap and infect my computer anyway. I always close the popup window using the close button (X). You are right. If you upgrade from 23H2 to 26H2 (you can do it directly using the ISO), you will face some known issues and incompatibilities and features changes/removal, but don't fear. For most of it there are fixes and workarounds. However, if you rather don't mess, it is better to stay with 23H2. If your CPU supports SSE4.2 you can upgrade any time using the ISO. Just let us know and we will guide you how to upgrade and how to fix any issues.

Unfortunately, my Defender does not work, I tried to fix it and the first attempt even worked but the system refused to update and I had to roll back, and the second attempt did not work.

You've been on this forum for 6 years and never given us your complete specs and I'm sure someone here has asked for it during that time. We've always had to guess what hardware you are working with. It makes a lot of our advice guesswork. We don't even know if you are running on compatible or incompatible hardware.
It's tough on us when we have to pry for information.

It appears you started having issues with Windows Defender in Windows 11-21h2. Is this the same computer you had then? Has Defender been broken all this time?

I am looking to update it anyway. And I usually just transfer the system without re-installing. Currently I am perhaps on unsupported hardware, but I am not sure. And does it make any difference?

Not sure.

Yes. I did not re-install.

It does.

If your system does not support SSE4.2, you will not be able to upgrade to any newer version.

An unsupported device will never be offered the update to the next version of Windows in Windows Update. It will only get the updates fro the version of Windows 11 that you are currently on, 23H2 in your case. The last cumulative update your 23H2 will get will be the Patch Tuesday update on November 10, 2026.

If you were to decide to upgrade to the latest 26H2 then you'd need to do a manual in-place upgrade with an ISO, and use the known workarounds to bypass the hardware checks.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.
