What does it do (or was supposed to do) on a typical home / private computer that the standard WD fails to do. If it's for corporate type machines --that's another issue but I can't see what's the problem with "Bog standard" WD anyway -- works pretty well these days - and I'd imagine corporate systems assuming their I.T services were up to the job would lock down client PC's pretty strictly so only apps could be installed from their own servers which should be pretty well protected one way or another.

Cheers

I'm using the current defender and it's fine and I've not been warned I need a 365 account to continue. It's not a scam is it?

Keep in mind you will still have your normal Windows defender on your Windows 10 and Windows 11 machines, that is still free and it's not going anywhere.

But Microsoft Defender is more of a centralized dashboard that you can use to manage security stuff on all of your devices, including phones, mac's, etc.

Bog-standard is pretty cool. We would say run-of-the-mill.
I wonder how the phrase bog-standard, came about.

Just any old thing, you'd find down at the bog?
Regular natural peat, as opposed to specially enhanced peat?

Hi there.

I'm sure this might be of value to some but to me it's just another pointless way of leading to more and more "subscription services" even if the amount is small -- but these are insidious - loads of small subscriptions turn into a big one and these days the best thing you can do to protect bank accounts etc is for them to have as little activity as possible from all sources.

I've used several Android phones, never had a security problem with any of those, several NAS servers which don't have an issue with security and since Windows 10 appeared with the far better Windows security of WD I haven't had a problem with any Windows machines. As for Smart TV's Who cares if someone hacks those -- would would they possibly get -- at the most a Netflix app but they'd still have to break into the account which is held on Netflix servers and not locally on the TV.

I'm sure this is probably of use to academic establishments where students use their own or the establishments laptops to access sercvers and applications but I just can't see a typical domestic consumer signing up for this unless it's included as part of their office/365 package and even then I doubt whether most would use it. I know people who've been using EXCEL since XP days and still don't know waht a Pivot table is or ever run a data query in it

Cheers

Well, I do see the benefits of a security dashboard for household LANs. Some households have the same number of devices as a small business, so why not broaden the present device-level security to LAN-wide security?

The LAN-level dashboard could extend beyond security to device health, app control, and other IT tasks that can be reasonably automated or semi-automated (y)

On the flip side, a subscription can be cost effective as well. It used to be that Adobe Photoshop was something like $600. My son has an Adobe Photography plan and he gets Photoshop and Lightroom for $10 a month. It would take over 5 years of paying for this subscription to hit that initial investment. And if my son decides after 2 years he doesn't want Photoshop anymore, we just cancel the sub. We then only spent $240 instead of the original $600+

Like most things there's really "No one size fits all".

I've found that my old CS6 photoshop still works very effectively even on modern high end DSLR cameras, Just use the cameras own software to convert RAW into Photoshop format (psd) (they all have it) or TIFF, process your pic and then if you want to save in camera RAW format convert back again from TIFF.

These are all lossless compressions (apart from TIFF which isn't compressed) and with the size and speed of modern storage and computers the extra workflow steps don't take long. I'm also not sure if printing a Mobile phone "Snapshot" at A3+ size or A2 (getting towards a Cinema poster size or exhibition hall type of print e.g at a trade fair for example ) would yield decent professional results whatever software was used.

Cheers

Agreed, on the "no one size fits all".

For me, PhotoShop CS6 might still be usuable, but I don't happe to own a license to use it. Like I said before it was real expensive back in the day.

And since my son is just learning photoshop and is now 14....i want him learning on a modern release most suitable for what he might be seeing in school or trainings now-a-days.

Therefore, I totally understand the concerns for subscriptions, for my purposes it's the absolute most cost effective way for us to use the versions we want to use.

Only what I have read.....BACK ON TOPIC.........plain Win "Defender" is not enough for computer security. It has gaps that another party has to fill, of your choice.

Please post ANY single instance of where WD has failed to identify a threat where another product has found one-- even if you download stuff from pirate bay or elsewhere.

I just do not believe in all these WD "Nay Sayers". This stuff works and is at almost Military grade level even for the most casual domestic consumer using all those torrent sites etc.

I just checked using it to counter Windows and other activations using those well known KMS bypasses -- on every case the WD found a problem -- good for it while a load of 3rd party apps just ignored the issue..

I regularly check this sort of stuff -- I even have an "Air Gapped Machine" to test Viruses etc and in the last 3 years have not come up with anything that is better than WD -- whether Malwarebytes, Avast or whatever. Note that this is in a Domestic consumer environment. For Enterprises, commercial networks etc the onus is different and all sorts of other secuity measures are important such as DDOS (Denial of Service) etc.

I doubt whether a domestic consumer customer has to be worried about Denial of Service (Unless they are phoning their Bank).

Cheers
jimbo
