I need permission from Trusted Installer to delete folders

I want to delete a folder on my data HDD. It's not my boot drive. I want it to look nice and organized for my backups, but this Program Files folder bothers me.

I want to delete Program Files and the folder inside of that called ModifiableWindowsApps. I did a CMD TAKEOWN of the folder Program Files and that was a success, but when I delete it, it says I need my own account's permission to delete it and it won't follow through. The folder inside of it called ModifiableWindowsApps still has TrustedInstaller and I can't figure out how to address that in CMD to do a TAKEOWN of it, and I'm not sure a TAKEOWN would even help me here either. I have screenshots here to help.

The folders are empty and they're holdovers from my old installation, and I use a different boot drive now, so it's fine to delete them. I just can't. Thanks all!

I just boot from a Macrium Reflect Rescue drive in winpe mode and delete it using its file manager.

It's easier to do that from File Explorer. In the Properties for the folder, on the Security tab click the Advanced button. Once you have ownership, you'll also need to grand your account Full control.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

Now the Trusted Installer is gone and I'm the owner of both folders but they still won't delete, they keep saying they need Administrator permission 1652979475385.png

I did warn in post #5 that you would also need to change permissions. Now you are the owner, in the Security tab for that folder's permissions click the Edit button, add your user account, then grant it full control.

It won't let me do that. This is what comes up. When I try to change any permissions, it grays it all out

You have made the built in Administrator account the owner. Change the owner to you own user account, then you should be able to change permissions.

You did not complete all the steps in the tutorial to change permissions to give yourself full control, just as @Bree said.

Sorry for the confusion guys. I messed up when making myself the owner. I fixed it now and it deleted fine.

You can do that, but this does all the work for you by default.

I want to to rename a file owned by Trusted Installer, I followed the steps above and changed the owner to myself. Then I modified the permissions to give myself FULL CONTROL on this file. However now when I try to rename it, instead of saying that I need Permission from TrustedInstaller, it says I need permission from mycomputer/myname. Then I repeated the process and this time made the owner 'Everyone' and likewise gave 'Everyone' full control. But again it says that I need permission from 'Everyone' to do it.

What am I missing?

This is a fresh install of Win 11 Home

Changing the permissions is the hard, and risky, way to do that. It's safer and easier to use a tool that gives you TrustedInstaller access, such as PowerRun, AdvancedRun, or my Right-Click Tools.
