My mother is 80 years old and she has been running Linux Mint since 2021..
I did the install as she dont even know what Linux VS Windows is.. But she has not had any problems as a user.
All support i have done is to keep the system updated and just made backups now and then.
So i think your biggest challenge will be to set it up.. But ZorinOS makes that really easy and user-friendly.

So if you have more then one computer and you just make a disk-clone of that setup you have now to an external disk.. Why not give it a try.. you can always restore the disk image clone if you feel it wasn't for you.. and you might have lost a few hours of your time :-)
Give it a thought.

One thing you might consider is a Linux Live USB.

It allows you to boot into Linux using a USB drive, and then use Linux without installing it on your computer.

A good way to "demo" Linux...without diving into the deep end.

to add to above... if you have USB3 or faster you can also install Linux on an external disk and then boot from the Bios boot menu as you boot an USB-stick

Actually I was referring to the installation location. You mentioned that it goes into the Program Files directly, instead of an AppData\Roaming\NameYourProgram location that a lot of programs wind up being installed at. I too also prefer the Program Files location.

I'd want things in the Program Files folder. Or the Program Files (x86) since I still run many things that are 32-bit that may only come in a 32-bit version. I have also accidentality found some 32-bit programs in my 64-bit Programs Files folder and they still work as they should, even though they are in the wrong folder. Probably due to my being careless.

And since it works in the wrong folder, I think MS should have only used one Programs Files folder instead of two and stop confusing the issue.

That's all I was getting at.

Congratulations on 77! :clap: Should you have a change of heart I recommend Linux Mint as it is very user friendly compared to other distros, uses an interface similar to Windows, and has been tried and tested. Plus it provides regular updates and the Community support is quite good. Having a backup OS is always a wise move and you can use FireFox on Mint to access Outlook Express for email. This will allow you to access other support groups in the event that you have issues with your Windows OS, and keep a record of those solutions. I'm no spring chicken myself but nobody is too old for Linux. :wink:

Have you tested ZorinOS?
What i have heard from others is that that one is even user-friendlier then Mint...
I have sadly not had the chance to take a look at it yet. My IRL life is messing with me to much, so i dont have time for computer projects now. :cautious:

Tried and tested, my dear droogie... Tried and tested. How long has Mint been around? Debian gives me regular updates and rarely does she ever crash. LMDE7 is pretty much all I'm ever gonna need on the flip side. :cool:

So what was you opinion of Zorin then?
I used LMDE3 but then i abandon Mint for Debian as i did not like the short lifespan on LMDE.. only 18 months or so to its going EOL. But LMDE was i nice Distro

I don't think Zorin is any more user friendly than LMDE7

The days of my distro hopping are over. TBH I don't even care if I run EOL anymore. As long as my security works, my apps still function, and I have at least one OS that I can run current VS with on the family network I'll be happy. I pay my bills via telephone. I stick with what works. Kaspersky works for me.

I have never distro jumped.. unless counting first 2 weeks in 2018 when i tested several to see what to start my Linux journey with..
I started Mint 18.3.. when Mint19 came it sucked, so i switched to LMDE.. then that one sucked on short lifespan.. so i went over to Debian in 2021.. and I have been running Debian ever since. :-)
But i do sometimes doing evaluations of Distros in a VM.. or Windows evaluations in VM's.. as a VM is good enough to get an opinion. 🤓

So if you have more then one computer and you just make a disk-clone of that setup you have now to an external disk.. Why not give it a try.. you can always restore the disk image clone if you feel it wasn't for you.. and you might have lost a few hours of your time :-)

The most "Windows like" and hugely reliable distribution which will work on modern laptops too is Fedora release 45 with KDE desktop. It's maintained by RedHat (now Owned by IBM) and used as the "testbed" for some of their commercial servers. Start with downloading a "Live" ISO which you can run from a USB stick --download the iso and create bootable USB device via Rufus etc.

(The live distro runs entirely from the USB device so no need to play around with Dual boot - and doesn't break your Windows "C" drive !!!!. There's also an option to install on to hard disk from the live distro - but I wouldn't do that until you've learned a bit more so you can choose what to install etc and make the 2nd OS lean and mean and not have zillions of apps you rarely if ever use).

Download Fedora Linux 45 Beta via BitTorrent

fedoraproject.org fedoraproject.org

Nothing wrong with using bit torrent for this stuff -- 100% valid site and far faster than normal servers as these are usely hugely overloaded when the public releases are announced. Microsoft should do the same.!!!

You probably need to disable secure boot though for booting other OS's than Windows or booting from things like DVD's / USB drives etc.

Choose the KDE desktop LIVE from the list.
