Windows 10
Hi,

I replaced the motherboard and processor on my PC which was not W11 compatible (i5 6600, no TPM). The integrity test passed without a hitch so I am now trying to upgrade my current Windows 10 installation to Windows 11 using "Windows 11 Installation Assistant". The process is running correctly then the computer reboots several times displaying the progress (14, 30, 64% ....) then on the nth reboot it displays "Attemting to recover the installation" then "Cancelling changes made to your computer" and the machine returns to Windows 10 as I had not done anything. The same thing happens when I run setup.exe from Windows 11 ISO. Windows Update also offered to upgrade my Windows 10 to version 11 but the procedure ended as in the previous cases. I should point out that my Windows 10 license is valid and permanent, and searching for updates in Windows Update doesn't show anything to install . My configuration is:
Asrock Z890 Steel Legend,
BIOS 2.25, 03/24/2025,
Core Ultra 7, 32 GB DDR5,
Windows 10 22h2.

Thank you in advance for any advice or suggestions.
Sincerely,
Jacques

welcome to the forum.
was the Win 10 install done as legacy boot/MBR as Win 11 24H2 requires UEFI/GPT to upgrade
from Win 10 to Win 11. i had the same problem and had to do a complete clean install of Win 11.

best of luck, Steve ..

Thank you Steve. My BIOS is UEFI of course and all disks are GPT partitioned. With all my software, keys and licences the clean install would be very difficult so for instance is not an option. Il hope there is a solution to my problem.

Jacques

have you used Rufus?
you burn the Win 11 24H2 ISO with Rufus to a USB stick then open explorer and browse to the new image on the USB and click setup.exe, just ensure you tick all the boxes as you start the burn.
this will start an in-place upgrade of Win 11 which normally works for most systems.

you can get Rufus from the Microsoft store or from here.

best of luck, Steve ..

  • You would need to look at the failure logs to see the cause of your failure. Depending on where in the install the failure occurs, the log can be in multiple places.

  • If no error message occurs, the following log files are created when an upgrade fails during installation before the computer restarts for the second time. You have to look at these logs to get an idea of what's causing the failure.
  • C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\setupact.log
  • C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\miglog.xml
  • C:\Windows\setupapi.log

  • [Windows 10:] C:\Windows\Logs\MoSetup\BlueBox.log
  • C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.app.log
  • C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log
  • C:\Windows\panther\PreGatherPnPList.log
  • C:\Windows\panther\PostApplyPnPList.log
  • C:\Windows\memory.dmp

  • The following log files are created when an upgrade fails, and then you restore the desktop:
    C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\setupact.log
  • C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\miglog.xml
  • C:\$Windows.~BT\sources\panther\setupapi\setupapi.dev.log
  • C:\$Windows.~BT\sources\panther\setupapi\setupapi.app.log
  • C:\Windows\memory.dmp

  • The following log files are created when an upgrade fails, and the installation rollback is initiated:
    C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.log
  • C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.err

  • I was already running 11 and my 24h2 upgrade rolled back so I found my particular error in the last 2 logs. My failure was due to an an issue with my user account. Trying to go from Windows 10 to Windows 11 24h2 makes the process even more difficult.
  • If logfiles do not direct you to what caused the error, I advise anyone to not waste his time. Either stay where you are or Bite the bullet, back up your data, and do a clean install. 24h2 will have you chasing your tail for days.

Hi, Jacques, welcome here.
  • Create the install media using Media Creation Tool (Option One)
  • Disable anti virus software.
  • Then try Option Two in the Tutorial below.
    • (If asked, say no to check for updates.)
  • Currently (Using Media Creation Tool) the windows ISO Build is Windows 11 Version 24H2 build 26100.2033
  • Check for updates using Windows Update if (after) the install is successful, to be moved to the latest build.

Edited, sorry.

Hello Steve,
I have already tried using the burned DVD DL but the result is the same. The problem occurs in the las phase of moving to W11 not during the download or initial actions.

zbook,

I don't know why the log is in French even though the system was in English when I ran those tools. Maybe the .bat calls other commands or execs that are in Franch version so they produce logs in French. Any idea ?
