Hi,

I have a question regarding indexing.

1. Do video and other files run from a external USB HDD get indexed too, even after unplugging it?

2. If yes, can they be removed from being indexed?

3. Is it smart to keep indexing on, and can it affect the performance of the machine?

4. Have it on by default on my machine.

5. It's pros and cons and how to turn it off?

Thanks.
Hoping to hear from you experts.

1. They can if you set them up right, if unplugged then nothing is going to get indexed since it's not there

2. If you want to set it up or not is completely up to you

3. I always have indexing turned off for better performance, my dad has no issues looking for files anyways.

5. Windows defaults to having it on unless you turn it off before installing the operating system.

6. Honestly really just keep it off. Both HDD and SDD in my past experience never had issues searching for the files. Turning it off easy way is going to the drive(Example C) and right clicking it and going to properties. Should see it at the bottom of the new window to turn it off. Will take a few moments to longer depending on how much it has indexed.

1. What exactly do you imply by "set them up right"?

6. Disable indexing service too?

Best regards!

PS: Your OS shows W11 NLITE optimized......what exactly does that stand for?

By setting them up right means if you turned your usb drive into an external hard drive by changing a few settings, you could in turn index that drive if you wish. I wouldn't normally do that but some people could find it useful I guess

NtLite in the short explanation way is that it makes you a god on your operating system that you can almost do anything to it(Example removal of Defender if you wish). It can also brick your operating system if not careful.

So by setting them up right, Im gonna say he means by going into the indexing settings and choosing which drives/folders etc you want indexed, Id say it'd be a case of just adding the external one. But if you unplug and repluggin etc im not sure if it'd remember etc so you might need to test that yourself.

The service, He means go to Services, Find windows search, Stop it, Disable it and it'll stop indexing running.
I did this due to an issue moons ago that caused anywhere from 3% to 6% cpu usage, So i ditched that for that reason alone. Not that i need the 3% or so but none the less an annoyance.
I actually find my files etc at least as quick as when it was on if not quicker. Depends on what youre doing though, Some people have hundreds of text files etc, I personally don't but depends on you're usage

NTLite is designed to trim your install Media and add or remove apps prior to installation. I don't think you can edit Windows 11 once it's installed without breaking it.
You can make an Image file of your Windows 11 computer now and save it to a USB HDD, then you can use NTLite to trim Windows 11 and then do a Clean Install using the NTLite installer, If it doesn't work or you don't like it you can restore your computer from the image file you saved.

Smart idea. Would need yours or @Necrosaro , expertise.;-)
