Somebody must tell workers in the bank to stop offering online banking.
What's annoying is when you refuse it and they look at you as some strange person because everybody is using online banking so something must be wrong with you.

Online banking is much safer than traditional banking - every time a payment goes into or out of my account, I immediately get a notification on my phone/watch; with traditional banking, I would need to wait weeks for a statement in the mail (very unsafe in itself) before I could see my account had been plundered.

If you're using your debit or credit card to purchase stuff online then you're right, it could be plundered every day by the limit that is set per day without being notified until the account is empty or until you figure it out.

To deal with this possibility I'm thinking about having 2 bank accounts, one on which I keep cash but don't buy anything online and another one which would contain only small amount of money which is used for online purchases.

I asked my bank to issue me a secondary debit card for online purchases but they said it's not possible, so I'm thinking about second account in another bank.
I think this method is safer than online banking with your main and only account where you keep your money.

Do your banks not reimburse you if money is stolen from your accounts?

I use my cards/watch to pay for everything with no fear; the only thing I pay in cash is for my haircut.

If they do people would intentionally hack their own cards and say somebody stole from them?

Perhaps they reimburse you in certain scenarios but I don't know how that works, it's worth asking in the bank.

I've had two of my cards ripped over the years, my business one via a data leak at a company I was paying and another for a card that I suspect had been cloned in the mail.

Both times I was notified on my phone of payments being made, I stopped the cards via my phone app and called the bank straight away and told them the payments were not mine and reimbursed the money straight away.

If I didn't have online banking those accounts would have been drained while waiting for a postal statement, so stop overthinking how unsafe internet banking is and think how unsafe it is not to be banking online.

My bank are on top of payments leaving my account. I get an immediate message on my phone of any "unusual transactions"this applies to any large payments that I had not made them aware of and all payments to a new payee until I clear them. I have very occasionally been delayed in the payment being made but both the legitimate seller and myself are aware of and agree with the safety check

Sorry guys, I'm old fashioned and don't trust electronics lol

I sleep well knowing there is zero connection between my bank account and anything online so don't have need to receive anything on my phone.

I probably use international banking more than many here --- I've never experienced any problem with bank cards or Amex (which is great if a bank I.T system is down and you are stuck in a hotel and need to check out).

I suspect that those who are most paranoid about all this stuff -- probably the same types who are are paranoid about Windows security and install 17 sets of A/V software on their machines are the most likely to get infected with malware and get their bank accounts hacked. I had no problem even in Russia (pre Ukraine war nonsense) or Israel, China, S.Korea either.

Just check your balances and transactions daily -- any payments you don't recognize contact Bank immediately and one of the most obvious scams that seems to catch people out is a note from say a builder, house agent, lawyer etc saying "please can you pay into this account instead - we've changed accounts" -- I don't know many -- if any trades people who regularly change banks -- certainly not house agents or lawyers -- simply phone the person supplying the service to check -- simple -- one phone call --but zillions get scammed every year by not doing that simple thing.

A dear friend (pensioner) had here account wiped out by scammers - she was refunded within a week.

The banks in UK have all recently had to sign up to a new code, and they cannot so easily wriggle out of refunding. Although the code was voluntary, a couple of UK majors held off joining but peer pressure got them to all fall in line. In fact my friend's bank RBS was one of last to fall in line. They were under pressure to do more to protect more vulnerable sections of the community.

As for haircuts, 60 seconds with my grade 1 trimmer, and then done.

I consider cash now as being primarily drinking vouchers - I rare spend money anywhere else (maybe Greggs now and then).

With this nasty malware, it all starts with our pc's being infected and then waiting around until you login to a bank account. Then the nasty begins it's nefarious chain of events. So, is Windows Security enough to prevent malware actors like these from infecting our computers?

I found this article on this malware also helpful in understanding this thing a little bit better. Bottom line: it starts with our computers being infected.

This is what I have came up with ..... I have 95% of all my money in one bank that all I use it for is to buy T-Bills with and then I have 5% in another bank tied to my CC cards.
And besides that I try to buy/pay for everything with Paypal but I use it from my Paypal balance not from a CC card and I use the 5% bank to transfer money to my balance to keep it where I want it to be.

Yes, my bank has absolutely reimbursed me for any money in my account when my debit card has been compromised.

I have 0 concerns with online banking and using my debit card for everything. My bank has stopped payments numerous times when it wasn't me, and even captured odd transactions when it was me and I was immediately notified and could handle either allowing it or not right on the spot.
