I was also wondering how my older Test PC activated a clean W11 install with digital license, but then I remembered I had been running it on W8.1 with a purchased license years ago. So obviously the MS servers recognized my mobo and the 8.1 install from the past as valid. Didn't have to enter any keys.

I had an unusual situation happen this last week. I had already upgraded to Windows 11 and my 3 month old motherboard failed. Dell sent me a new one. I knew my Windows 10 product key was embedded in the old mobo uefi bios and not the new one so I was concerned what would happen when I installed the new mobo and fired it up with reinstalling. Exactly nothing. It worked without a hitch, activation and everything. All because the PC was in my list of Microsoft devices.

Now I want to upgrade to 11. the machine is ready and qualifies.
Do I run the Upgrade assistant. Or I also downloaded windows 11 with MCT.
is there any difference in using either one? I want to save everything and just upgrade.
