Installation pending restart, but restarting doesn't work

Hi, I tried installing a software called Xcalibur from Thermo Fisher on Windows 11, and it told me to restart mid-installation. I told it to wait, as I had work to finish. At some point, I must have done something stupid, so when I now try restarting, the installation does not continue. When I open the installation file, I just get an error telling me I need to restart.

How do I actually get this installed? I'm sure there's some registry files or temporary files I could play with?

I've tried restarting many times, deleting "PendingFileRenameOperation" in Controlset001 in regedit (was recommended elsewhere), as well as all files and folders pertaining to Xcalibur.

Firstly, I didn't really consider this a software issue, but rather a Windows startup/schedule/installation-issue. Regardless, the software (Xcalibur 4.6) is behind a login system, so providing a link doesn't seem meaningful. In any case, I'm happy to provide any other information if its of help, but I'm not sure what else to give.

Does the program show up in Programs and Features? If so uninstall it, then re-install it.
If it doesn't show up, then REVO Uninstaller Pro (paid), has a tool called Forced Uninstall that will remove partially installed programs.

Generally, you would only need the free version, but it doesn't have the Forced Uninstall.

No, its not not listed as installed. Thanks, I'll consider REVO uninstaller unless someone else has any other ideas. :)

In searching for TS Xcalibur install issues, I saw something from December that might be related. https://www.researchgate.net/post/T...e_to_install_it_in_a_M1_Apple_Virtual_machine

A user is trying to install on a Windows 11 installation in Parallels on an M1 Mac, and ran into the issue where it refuses to start, stating that the Thermo Foundation Database Service did not start.

Does your Windows installation have any Thermo services installed? If so, try setting them to automatic.

Also, describing your PC hardware will help here.

Thanks, but I'm not sure what she's describing is helpful here. According to services.msc, I don't have any other thermo services installed, no. The error message given by the installation program is "Failed to install ERROR_INSTALL_ALREADY_RUNNING(1618)".

I'm running a Samsung Book2, i5 1235U, Iris Xe with 8 GB ram, 256 GB SSD and Windows 11 Home edition.

It could be either one, most likely was caused by some kind of corruption, either in Windows or the app.
As @Ghot said Revo Pro is a good bet.
You can also restore a backup image if you have one.. If you have a restore point from before you installed the app, you can try that, too. Or you can contact the developer of the app to see if they have some kind of manual uninstall method as some apps do, where the user has to remove every file and registry entry manually.

Yeah. I tried starting in safe mode, but the same error appeared. There doesn't seem to be any thermo/xcalibur-related processes running either.
I match the system requirements, yes.

I'll be trying REVO when I have some free time.

If you don't have an image you could do like @glasskuter suggested and try using System Restore.

I just thought of something else you can try. Look in Taskmanager and look to see if anything with the programs name is running. If it is, disable it and try the install again.

It could be any of a number of things. Without actual access to the software it's hard to trace what the installer does.

@Quantonium - have you contacted Thermo Fisher for help? I'm assuming there is a license through your university / employer that will allow for customer service to help you with it....

Sounds like it already installed some service - some core file - probably in Program Data, Roaming or Local folder (if not two of this places). It's probably bugged too (a conflict with the installer - which seems to interact with the previously installed part that's left behind). Since it's not a public app (used by many - or at least enough users) - i'm not really surprised (probably tested only by a small group of beta testers).

When it comes to apps like this - it's usually for the best - to check the oficial support: https://www.thermofisher.com/ro/en/home/technical-resources/contact-us.html Someone has too - or else that bug will be ported to future versions.

See if you can find any entry related to Xcalibur or Thermo Fisher - with autoruns:

See what programs are configured to startup automatically when your system boots and you login.

Disable it (uncheck it) and Delete it. But first check the source - the path where it's installed and clean that too. It can also be a reg value. Which you might be able to find with: Registry Finder - just look for Xcalibur or Thermofisher (not sure how it's actually registered tho).

Thanks for all the help, everyone. I tried Revo uninstaller to no avail. I also tried "autoruns" and "registry finder", as well as looking through program data and appdata, and removing any trace of xcalibur and thermo. Nothing worked. Im giving up! Thanks again
