Solved Installing WII on a Windows 10 machine with no OS

This may seem like a dumb question, but I haven't tried this myself before. I need to know if this is doable without too much hassle, if so I'll cancel my bid.

Can I still activate Windows 11 Pro with the window 10 pro OEM key on the same device now in 2024?

I plan to get a Dell 7740 that has no system installed on the SSD it will come with, but was tested with Windows 10 installed to check the laptop. I'm wondering if the OEM Windows 10P license that the laptop came with would still activate a new Windows 11 OS. Or do I need to install the original OS Windows 10 and let it activate that and then install Windows 11 ?

Bought off eBay, working.
W10 & 11 share the same product key, for any given edition. W10 Pro = W11 Pro.

For a clean install, Setup will detect the Dell's OEM product key and automatically use it for activation. MS may have already associated the PC's HW ID with a digital license for Pro (if you were online with W10). Either way, you shouldn't have to anything special.

If the computer originally had Win8/8.1, 10, or 11 then installing 10 or 11 will be what the original was, Home or Pro. If Home, it will require a purchased key to get Pro activated.

Why would they want to run an insiders preview? I don’t think you should be encouraging people who may not have any insight into what a preview build is, to download and install a preview build.

To add, the Insider program contained/contains warnings not to use the test/Beta versions on a production machine or the only machine available as there would be changes and possible failures. I used to be in the Win10 Insider Preview program.

This may be of some use, I asked similar questions and got some great answers.

Wrong windows version given by Microsoft after install

It isn't a problem, because I used my Windows 10 upgrade key from Home to Pro and Windows 11 accepted it and upgraded. But I am wondering why the completed fresh installation gave me Windows 11 Home instead of Windows 11 Pro when the laptop was in fact noted on my Microsoft accounts digital...

This is a Dell 7740, part of Dell's Precision product line which is targeted to working professionals. At a minimum, it's bundled with Pro.

If you're not enrolled in the WIP, you can stay on the RTM build.

Lenovo Thinkpad and the HP ZBook are also targeted to the same market audience.

Yes, the key embedded in the firmware will determine the edition that's installed, Home or Pro. But if it originally had Win10, then the Win10 key in its firmware will activate Win11. As you say, if it was Home and you want Pro then a new key must be purchased.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

There is no reason why they would need to do that. They just need to download the Windows 11 ISO. Their Windows 10 Pro Key should install and activate Windows 11 Pro on there computer. The only thing I see that they need to do when installing is to decide if they want to install it with or without a MS Account. If they choose without we can help guide them on how to do it.
