Windows 11 Pro Version 25H2 (OS Build 26200.9168)
I know some have installed Win 11 even though their hardware wasn't completely on the compatible list. Everything on my PC checks except the CPU. I went through the Windows Insider/Dev & it looked like Windows was willing to (try) installing 22000.51. I didn't try it but thought it best to ask a few questions.

My understanding is if the install is successful & my CPU (Ryzen 7-1700, 1st gen) never makes the compatible list, that I would eventually have to fall back to Win 10 when the official Win 11 version is released. Is that right? How might that work? On release day my PC auto reverts back to the latest Win 10 Version?

The standard window to revert to a previous version of Windows is 10 days, and then that is only good for the last upgrade that was done. The time window can be adjusted with a dism command, it depends on how long you want to keep windows.old on your hard drive.

Once you upgrade Windows 10 to 11 and windows.old gets deleted (standard is automatically after 10 days), the only way to go back to Windows 10 is to do a clean install.

Always do a backup such as Macrium of Windows 10 for plan B return .
Surface Go mark 1 2017-2019 processor is Pentium 1.6 gold, well below Gen 8 requirement touted by Microsoft and still installs Windows 11 Home ( in 2 hours )
The key perhaps to updating is mainly TPM 2.0 security .

I'll have to research to find the MS statement about reverting back to Win 10 "if" the final Win 11 specs remain the same.

I've been looking but cannot find a doc or install tutorial (don't recall which) that mentioned that Win 11 22000.51 could be installed as a dev but we may have to revert back to Win 10 once Win 11 is officially released because of hardware requirements. Maybe it was speculation from a blogger(?).

Are you sneaking?
I have Win 11 installed on my machine, it has no TPM or Secure boot and the CPU isn't listed as acceptable (i7 4790K)
But I will be da**** if I am going to rush out and buy $2000.00 worth of HW to run Win 11 on a machine that is STILL VERY much a goer. :)

The current 22000.71 ISO will allow an in-place upgrade from W10 without the compatibility check getting in the way on any of my machines with 4th gen or later processors.

For System Two in my specs below with its 'previous gen' processor (as Intel call those made before 2nd gen was released) then a 'workaround' was needed, but W11 works perfectly once installed.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

My SYSTEM EIGHT is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (5th gen) type 20LN, Celeron N4120, 8GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, a supported device for Windows 11. Currently running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds as native boot vhdx.
FWIW,, I have mine working on an unlisted processor and I do plan on getting an upgrade in Sept.. it was a planned move for some time and I've been simply putting it off. It's going to be a nice birthday gift to myself.

Even I installed version W11.71 and adjusted according to the KrakatoA manual adapted for Win11. It works well and reliably for 2nd week. All I cannot uninstall is "Getting Started". All my attempts ended unsuccessfully. Please, give me an advice. Zdenek

Okay, I now can install Win 11 with 22000.71 ISO. Will I need to/be able to revert back to Win 10 when Win 11's final release is in place? Or, will I be stuck in Windows 11 purgatory ;) forever, with no further updates? o_O

I deleted my Windows.old folder and eliminate all the leftovers that will make me revert back.
There's no worry about stuck in this version because when the new update comes, just do update.
I did it from the first leaked version (21996).

Are you sneaking?
Might want to check that.

if your hardware specs don't match, you may not be able to install the final available for general release, and you may then be forced to reinstall Windows 10.

That seems to be the current plan for those people installing the Dev channel releases on 'unsupported' hardware for now, and until we are told otherwise, that is what we know.
