Is it better to leave fans in default mode on an ASUS Dual GeForce RTX™ 4060?

I've read about the 0db fans but, wondered if that keeps things cool enough with that default setting? I know I'm not going to put much of a load on it and the case fans work pretty well. Thanks!

By default, the fans will ramp up and down automatically according to your GPU’s temperature. You can adjust this Fan Speed slider up or down and press Apply to set the fan to a constant speed of your choosing, however. For most people, this won’t be ideal for everyday use, but playing with this slider can help you figure out what speeds give you the right balance of acoustics. For example, after moving the slider up and down a bit, I found that my card’s fan noise isn’t too bothersome until it reaches about 60 or 70%, which will help me dial in a custom curve to fit my preferences. You can click the Auto button at any time to return to the default fan behavior.

I think it’s a good idea to have software that understands your GPU. And that can determine what your PC is doing to recommend settings. Others may have different opinions.

Also, case fans are great, but I think a GPU really needs dedicated cooling addressed properly as the case fans aren't directly pointed at the GPU at a distance that would have an effect on the GPU temperatures. More so they are simply circulating the contained hot air. Same goes for a CPU.

I let the Nvidia drivers manage the fans on my RTX 4060, much of the time the fan isn't running. However, when it's occasionally actually doing real work, I hear the fan ramp up.

I downloaded GPU Tweak III and have been checking it every once in a while. It shows to be averaging 50-52 degrees Celsius.

My EVGA RTX 2070 has those zero rpm fans at idle.
I didn't like that. I wanted them to move a little bit, even at idle.
Below is a pic of the fan curve I used for the GPU fans.

Image1.webp

I have the fans set to not go below 10%, and when the GPU passes 25C... I have the fans set to ramp up.
My GPU idles at 30C give or take.

I've been running this RTX 2070.... 24/7 since May 2020.
I only play old, slow games though.

That's a different program but, I'll try and see what I can do that's similar to what you've got there. Thanks!

Yeah... that program is for EVGA cards.
But all the GPU altering programs are pretty much based on the old, old Riva Tuner. :-)
In other words... they're all pretty much the same.

You can also use MSI Afterburner (free) on any vid card.

I'm still looking for the fan curve plot in this program. Haven't figured out how to open that screen up yet.

The link in post #2 above, shows how to access the Fan Curve Editor in GPU Tweak III

Here’s the real trick: with the fan curve editor, you can adjust the fan’s automatic behavior for a more fully-customized experience. Click the pencil icon under the fan speed slider to enter the Fan Settings window, where you can adjust how the fans respond to different levels of load. By default, ROG and TUF Gaming cards keep the fans off for completely silent operation under a certain temperature — 55° C in the case of my TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4090 — and they quickly ramps up from there. Since I like to run a very quiet PC (and I’m willing to allow slightly higher GPU temperatures to make that happen), I want to adjust the curve so it ramps up slower. To move the curve, just click anywhere on the graph to add a new point, and drag it to your desired location on the graph.

And, here's a tutorial for MSI Afterburner, if you decide to use that... just click on: "Custom Fan Speed" section.

I'm not sure which program you refer to. In MSI afterburner:

afterburner.webp
Click on the gear, second from the bottom on the left.
That brings up a window. Click on the Fans tab:

fans.webp

When messing with settings, it's useful to know that the icon near center, bottom of the main screen, resets to the default settings.

reset.webp

I usually stay with the default fan profile. 0 RPM when it's not loaded. The fans get moderately loud at full speed on a 4090. The 4060 is much quieter. (Uses about 1/4 the power of the 4090 at full chat.)

I don't do anything at all.
While games are not running the fans do not spin at all, in games they spin in proportion to the load (I guess).
