Is it expected behavior that media keys such as vol up / down do not work through a KVM?

My keyboard has keys that perform functions such as volume up, volume down, play, pause, stop, etc. These have always worked perfectly for me. However, today I connected my computer to a KVM and I find that those keys no longer work. Is this expected behavior or do I maybe simply have a bum KVM?

Note that this is a KVM that intercepts or "examines" the keys being pressed as it does have the ability to switch between machines by typing a specific key sequence.

It's been MANY years since I've used a KVM at home so I'm not familar with what normal behavior is at this time. Just curious whether this is something others have observed.

The use of KVM on windows has always been an issue, especially when dealing with bespoke special keys. As they just send a code to the computer which is translated by the keyboard driver, it should work, but often does not.

My own thoughts are that this can be due to length of transmission cabling that is normally involved with the use of KVM and the fact that special codes tend to be more complex. it could also be that the KVM is a better model that includes signal amplification - this can make up for distance, unfortunately they often also filter the signal. and may therefore not transfer the special key codes which they cannot identify

I personally switched to using Logi(tech) hardware with a universal USB dongle in multiple PCs as these are wireless at up to 10 Metres and more and work with little issue

Yeah it sounds like your KVM is not just switching the data but does it's own thing too. Because it parses all the data, it will probably skip sending forward data that it does not understand...

The keyboard volume control works fine with the KVM I have here, however it doesn't do audio, that's routed from my 4 PCs to the amp / speakers via a passive stereo mixer.
