Is it fine to ignore fan problem (error 90B) for light to medium use?

My HP laptop is now 8.5 years old. Recently, the fan has started making a noise and I get Error 90B almost every time I boot. The noise isn't too loud, but it is not normal either.

This is now my secondary laptop, so my use is quite light, except when I am exploring Windows installation, etc.

The temperatures as recorded by Speccy, SpeedFan, CoreTemp are all within normal limits (under 60°C) most of the time.

Can I continue using the laptop without replacing the fan (which spare is not easily available for this model) and without damaging the other components?

The laptop is running perfectly fine otherwise.

Thanks.

This error indicates that a problem exists related to the heat removal system. One of two possible events is occurring: The system fan is not spinning or not spinning properly. The temperature inside the case is too high and the fan cannot spin fast enough to remove the heat.

You will have many issues if the laptop overheats, which will.

The temperatures are within normal limits as I mentioned in the OP. The laptop also doesn’t feel hot to the touch (it only feels warm which is normal).

And the error shows up only during boot. I don’t get any errors during use.

In the worst case, the CPU or other components will unsolder itself from the board (happened to me on a Dell Latitude.). Try to blow compressed air in the reverse direction of the laptop (= where the warm air comes out), the fan might just be clogged. But keep the laptop shut down while doing so, the reverse direction of the fan could otherwise crash the system.

@TheMystic It can't be too bad if all the temp monitoring programs are ok. If it was me I would get it checked out to be on the safe side in case it is going to stop working all together and fry the insides. Have you checked out the error code?

It is clean inside. This problem started after I opened it up to check for another problem. The thermal tape that holds the fan in place is worn out. I’m wondering if the fan is not held in place firmly, causing it to make the noise.

But I don’t want to open the laptop again, because every time I open it, my keyboard gets damaged a little. The keyboard is still working fine, although some of the keys have an awkward position (the structure is bent in a couple of places). They all are working fine though.

There are some other problems too like a broken hinge, cracking speaker, and I want to fix all of them at one go when I open it next time. But don’t know when. Just want to keep using the laptop safely until then.

Yes, I have looked through the solutions online. There is no dust or anything that is preventing the fan from running. There are only two possibilities from what I guess:

1. The fan isn’t held firmly in place because of a dried up thermal tape, causing it to probably wobble during run. But the noise isn’t one that would come from a wobbling fan though.

2. The fan is nearing its end of life. I’m not finding an original spare locally, and so that is another problem.

Worth re-taping and check no wiring is touching the blades (I had that on a water-cooled motorbike once)
I don't know what HP's web service for spares is like. I am sure your local repair shop could find a suitable alternative fan if not get an original for you.

For me the best smell in the morning is either the smell of fried bacon or the smell of fried CPU. Seriously, if there is a problem with the fan eventually the CPU will get fried. At 8 1/2 years old and the condition it's in I can't see investing any money into it.

I would take it to a shop and get it cleaned out. But that's me and I don't like killing hardware.,. well,, not mine. OH and there are stands for laptops that provide great air flow to keep it cool.. I got one for Erin's and it works like a charm.

And yes,, Bacon is the best!!!

if there is a problem with the fan eventually the CPU will get fried.
Is that likely to happen if the operating temperatures are just fine (mostly below 60°C)?

At 8 1/2 years old and the condition it's in I can't see investing any money into it.
Only 2 important problems:

1. Broken Hinge (on one side)
2. Noisy Fan

Other unimportant problems:

3. Crackling speaker: not a major problem
4. Keyboard structure bent in a few places, but all keys are fully functional: not a major problem. It's not as bad as it may sound. You really have to look for the problem to find it.

Only expenses incurred so far:

1. Put a new SSD in the extra caddy available inside the laptop. The OS is installed on this.
2. Changed the battery with a local knock-off (original not available). I get about 2 hours of SOT.

Both the above done about 3 years back.

EVERYTHING works fine.

01. Laptop boots in under 10 seconds.
02. Runs cool.
03. Runs fast.
04. All 4 USB ports are fully functional.
05. WiFi works fine.
06. Display is fine.
07. Fingerprint sensor works fine.
08. Touchpad works fine.
09. Blue Ray player works fine.
10. Audio jack works fine.
11. HDMI port works fine.
12. Ethernet port works fine.

Why would you make a comment like that?

I would take it to a shop and get it cleaned out. But that's me and I don't like killing hardware.,. well,, not mine. OH and there are stands for laptops that provide great air flow to keep it cool.. I got one for Erin's and it works like a charm.

And yes,, Bacon is the best!!!
It is clean only on the inside. The reason I am not taking it to a shop is because I am sure they will give it back with atleast one new problem that didn't exist before.

Functionally, the laptop is very fine.

In post number 8 TheMystic stated that the laptop is clean and that nobody local has a replacement fan. If they really want to keep the laptop running, they could search online for a replacement fan. While they are at it, they could look for a replacement keyboard.

Sure. I just want to make sure that the fan is EOL. When I open it next time (I don't know when), I will try putting a new tape to hold the fan firmly in place and see if that helps. If not, I will buy a new fan.

Ok.,. but why did you start this discussion for if you had no plans on doing anything to it?
If you're not having any issues just use it.
