Is it possible for Windows 11 File Explorer to not close in on itself?

I have noticed the File Explorer windows closes on it's own without permission if it is left idle for too long (more than several minutes) I like to keep it open when i need to skip folder searching.

Is it possible to disable/turn off this behaviour?

That’s not normal behavior. I leave FE open forever…
Have you made any tweaks to your OS?

Check the Event Viewer. Next time it closes, note the time and look for an entry in the EV.

I found the folder settings, explorer settings and the power and battery settings and no leads on idle anything close. Everything on power saving options is set to never.
I doubt the event viewer would be much help. I tend blink a lot which means i can't rely on small seconds to notice the exact moment a folder has closed.

is this possibly hidden under run>gpedit.msc ?

Not looking for "exact" moment, as the cause (event) could be any number of seconds before closure happens. You'll need to review EV for time frame either side of when you notice the closure.

EDIT I have an errant accidental mouse click in mind .... close, or minmise to Taskbar?

EDIT2 Try (test) a 3rd party file manager - xplorer2 lite is free

It very well could have been. Monitor it for the rest of today and if it does not Close, then you are good. :thumbsup:

The only time I've known File Explorer close of its own accord was when it was open looking at a usb drive and I then ejected the usb.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I figured out it is a manual problem when i dont notice that i closed it
