Hi,

I am a Dell laptop Inspiron 16 5645. The past month or two my computer been freezing then the fan goes on for few seconds and then my computer works fine again. Like the task i am doing like i mostly web browse but when i am browsing all of a sudden the page stops working properly and my laptop fan comes on. I noticed it more when my laptop is plugged into my charger. Im not sure if this is a more over heating problem or something else. I updated to 25H2 recently but this has been happening before it as well. It just happens randomly. My BIOS is update to date and everything else. I always keep my computer up to date with everything. I attached a screen shot of some of my computer specs so i hope it helps. I was thinking about getting a cooling pad but not sure if that will help or if its something else going on.

Best thing to do is check your temperatures when the laptop freezes.
HWMonitor can do that for you, and it's free.

Ideally, your CPU temperature should be around 60 to 70 degrees Celsius (140 to 158 degrees Fahrenheit) when running essential apps and around 40 to 45 degrees Celsius (104 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit) when sitting idle. Moreover, the safe CPU temperature range for gaming is roughly 70 to 80 degrees Celcius. If your CPU is regularly shooting above these temperature ranges, you need to clean your PC, improve the cooling system, and re-apply thermal paste.

Chances are it is starting to have overheating problems. Laptop cooling fans tend to get clogged with dust, given enough time. I usually disassemble my laptops and blow the dust out of the fans with some compressed air every few months. A cheap set of precision screwdrivers and the service manual for your laptop can solve the problem, or you can pay someone to do clean it for you.

Monitor it while keeping what @FreeBooter said in post #3
It may be that your laptop actually IS getting hot enough to freeze up.

NOTE: It's best to always use your laptop on a hard surface, so nothing is blocking the vents.

Dell laptop Inspiron 16 5645....
...i will monitor it for now.
The Inspiron 16 5645 comes with either an AMD Ryzen™ 5 8540U or Ryzen™ 7 8840U. Both have a Max. Operating Temperature (Tjmax) of 100°C.
https://www.amd.com/en/products/processors/laptop/ryzen/8000-series/amd-ryzen-5-8540u.html
https://www.amd.com/en/products/processors/laptop/ryzen/8000-series/amd-ryzen-7-8840u.html

Anything within 10°C of Tjmax should be regarded as overheating, that would be 90°C or above.

This review found the Inspiron 16 5645 to stay relatively cool under heavy load, reaching a maximum 82°C in benchmark tests.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

While I use HW Monitor as needed for advanced monitoring, on a day to day basis I find having Coretemp run in my system tray lets me know the highest temp running on any of my cores is an advanced warning that I have a temp problem. I get a flyout from Coretemp when my temps reach a certain level. I have mine set to shutdown my system if I run at tjMax (100 deg) for over 10 seconds.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
Mine does get warm when running, I have mine mounted on a cooler shelf, USB powered. 5 small fans and one large ones quietly keep my laptop cool.
