Is there a way to change what shows in the 'Open With' fly out menu in Win 11?

It's really that simple. I don't want to see certain program listed but they are and it's annoying! LOL

Thank you

Richard

That menu is not exactly static, can change. The programs listed on Open with get put there when a program is installed. Only way I've found to change the Open with list is to uninstall the program associated with a particular file type but the downside is that a computer can have more than one program installed that will open the same type file.

Surely its title should say in Windows 10 and Windows 11 since it's a combined one, my TenForumsTutorial list takes me to the same place.

All the best,

@RAMWolff

Hi, Richard,

When I find a useless entry in my Open With list for a given file type, say .jpg, I just go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\
and find .jpg in the list, and, as @Brink says, look at the OpenWithList and OpenWithProgids keys for the things I don't want, and delete them. Works. There'll be an index letter (a, b, c,...) for the undesirable program, and you just right click that letter and choose Delete, and say Yes.

In my current Windows 11 Pro (24H2) this no longer works.

The OpenWithList exists, for example for .jpg, and has five programs in it, but only four of them are among the six in the Open With context menu for jpgs, and they are in a different order.

Are there any other suggestions?
