True story: One of the reasons for MS buying the Hotmail service was a way to migrate everyone to the new Passport user sign-in. You know it today as Microsoft Account.
Everyone does the same thing.

I always thought that Microsoft originated Hotmail when I got my account back in '97 or '98. They were going to discontinue it by merging into Outlook.com a few years later [and I also got an Outlook.com account] but it didn't happen and both got merged into Live, still have valid addresses and now both come up in https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/outlook/email-and-calendar-software-microsoft-outlook?deeplink=/owa/&sdf=0.

Hotmail is now Outlook, but all the original addresses still work:

@live.com
@outlook.com

One side effect of the constant rebranding was if you missed out as berton@hotmail, you could have snagged berton@live or berton@outlook, as a way to help users who were late to the game.

Nah - G pay has been superseded by Google Wallet. In UK we cannot install G Pay anymore.

There are some minor functionality differences relating to money transfer but frankly that is not an issue - there are so many ways to transfer dosh as most people have online banking.

And the point you make here also maybe why MS at some point will take all these local account names and auto create MS email accounts out of them and switch them to MS accounts :scream:

They're already MS accounts by definition. The only Outlook addresses which aren't are those belonging to a Work/School/Government domain.

And MS Accounts have accepted having non-MS email addresses for over a decade. My point is all this works silently in the background as a single sign-on. Your Gmail profile is the same one shared for Google Drive, YouTube, etc. and all those unpopular Google services doomed to die ;-)
