Issue with default browser.

Hi,

For several weeks now, when I click on an HTTP link, it doesn't open in the default browser application. I tried resetting the default browser in the default applications settings, but it didn’t fix the issue.

I think creating a new profile might resolve the problem, but I’d like to understand why this is happening.

Can anyone explain it to me?

When you installed (or upgraded to), 24H2, MS stole the default app for many internet items... and set them to EDGE.
You need to change them back to your default browser.

My default browser is Firefox, so I had to change them all from EDGE, back to Firefox.

Try resetting the default link type for both HTTP and HTTPS.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Are they opening in Edge? Where are you clicking on links, in Windows search?
If so, then what you’re experiencing is by default. Microsoft Edge specfic lnks.

I have Windows setup to bypass Microsoft Edge specific links and processes by overriding them and passing them on to my default browser, using MSEdge redirect which works exactly how it says it’s supposed to.

I select “Active Mode”
Click next, select the settings for it to redirect all Edge links including search results in Windows, to my default browser.
It doesn’t remove Edge, that isn’t a good idea. It’s needed for other actions and disables things like Windows CoPilot app, I believe
