July 2024 Update on Instability Reports on Intel Core 13th and 14th Gen Desktop Processors

 Intel Community:

Based on extensive analysis of Intel Core 13th/14th Gen desktop processors returned to us due to instability issues, we have determined that elevated operating voltage is causing instability issues in some 13th/14th Gen desktop processors. Our analysis of returned processors confirms that the elevated operating voltage is stemming from a microcode algorithm resulting in incorrect voltage requests to the processor.

Intel is delivering a microcode patch which addresses the root cause of exposure to elevated voltages. We are continuing validation to ensure that scenarios of instability reported to Intel regarding its Core 13th/14th Gen desktop processors are addressed. Intel is currently targeting mid-August for patch release to partners following full validation.

Intel is committed to making this right with our customers, and we continue asking any customers currently experiencing instability issues on their Intel Core 13th/14th Gen desktop processors reach out to Intel Customer Support for further assistance.

Initially the instability is under load but after the damage is done it's all the time.

I take it the i7 14700F released in Jan 2024 has this problem. I haven't seen any problems but it's probably too early, dang it.

Intel said this fixed the problem in 2023, although they didn't say when, but if your CPU was manufactured in January 2024 or even December 2023 then I would say that you should be fine.

My guess is that Intel aren't being more specific regarding dates or which batches might be affected to avoid masses of people RMAing their 13th and 14th gen CPUs.

How do you find the manufacturer date? I just purchased my laptop so I assume mine was probably made sometime in 2024.

There are two separate issues here. Internal overvolting damages all CPU's regardless of when they were made. All need the new microcode that won't be available until next month at the earliest.

The via oxidation issue is limited to early production units and we won't know exactly which ones until Intel gives more guidance.

I bought my 14700F in March. I have an Asus ROG STRIX Z690-F and they released a BIOS update a few days ago which I updated yesterday. Hopefully I'm OK. It states the update "Updated with microcode 0x125 to ensure eTVB operates within Intel specifications", not sure if it relates to this problem.

I did not do the very last bios update with my Z90-H MB, with my 13900 Intel CPU. let the dog sleep, as it runs good. I will find out more if I ever update to a new Video car that matches my CPU.

My Core i7-13700K bought in April 23 has warranty cover until May 26 from the above link. In the UK consumer law gives protection for manufacturing faults for up to 6 years. Intel should extend the warranty for the affected CPUs for at least 6 years which is the UK legal cover or preferably the for life of the CPU for this defect.

I double checked my bios settings and I already had the 253w max set which keeps my cpu voltages below 1.5v so I'm not worried about burning her out. I am however concerned about the oxidation issue since mine is early production.

I might just pick up a 14900k the next time they go on sale unless Intel gives me a reason to jump back to AMD. I will not, however, go back to an AMD gpu.

New reporting by Techpowerup.

First of all, it appears that at least all 65 W or higher base power Intel 13th and 14th gen CPUs are affected—regardless of SKU and lettering—by the so-called elevated Voltage issue. To be clear, it doesn't mean all these CPUs will start to fail and Intel claims that its microcode update will solve the issue for CPUs that haven't shown any signs of stability issues.

UPDATE: The article mentioned by Techpowerup is from The Verge which in my view doesn't reflect well on Intel.

Perhaps Intel needs to heed this wise advice. :giggle:

This sounds like a class action lawsuit in the making. Voltagegate to borrow from the Apple terminology.

Extremely frustrating, how can they even get away with this, know faults, and the consumer suffers.

Perhaps a mass complaint to the FTC is in order in addition to a class action.....

Or.....get Steve from GN in attack mode.

I'm sure if enough people complain to the FTC they would force Intel's hand.

at least motherboard maker MSI (Microstar International) is recently doing something about it:

Addressing Recent Intel Core 13th and 14th Gen Desktop Processor Instability
Regarding the recent Intel® Core™ 13th /14th Gen desktop processors instability, MSI has worked closely with Intel to understand the situation and is closely monitoring the progress. We will provide the updated BIOS to our customers and users as soon as possible after the new microcode is released in the middle of August. Stay tuned.
