UPDATE 9/9: KB5005642 Windows 11 Insider Preview Beta Build 22000.184 - Sept. 9

UPDATE 7:10PM PDT: Recently, Windows Insiders in both the Dev and Beta Channels began reporting that Start and Taskbar were unresponsive and Settings and other areas of the OS wouldn’t load. We quickly discovered an issue with a server-side deployment that went out to Insiders and canceled that deployment. If you were impacted by this issue, you can use the following steps to get back into a working state on your PC.
  • Step 1: Use CTRL-ALT-DEL and choose to open Task Manager.
  • Step 2: Choose “More details” at the bottom of Task Manager to expand Task Manager.
  • Step 3: Go to “File” and choose “Run new task”.
  • Step 4: Type “cmd” in the “Open” field.
  • Step 5: Paste the following: reg delete HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\IrisService /f && shutdown -r -t 0
  • Step 6: Hit enter, and then your PC should reboot. After rebooting, everything should be back to normal.

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22000.176 to the Beta Channel!

We are also making Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22000.176 available to commercial PCs in the Release Preview Channel. Please see this blog post for all the details.

Changes and Improvements

  • People want to get closer to the things they love, faster. This is why commonly used experiences like Search, Task View, Widgets and Chat are pinned to the Taskbar in Windows 11. To manage which of these icons are pinned to the Taskbar in one place, simply right-click on the Taskbar and select “Taskbar settings” to open the Taskbar Settings page and choose which system icon to hide. If you hid any of these system icons previously and want to unhide them – you can do this via the Taskbar Settings page.
Simply right-click on the Taskbar and choose “Taskbar settings” to choose which system icons appear.
Simply right-click on the Taskbar and choose “Taskbar settings” to choose which system icons appear.

Fixes

[General]
  • We fixed an issue with paired Bluetooth LE devices that was causing an increase in Bluetooth reliability issues and bugchecks after resume from hibernate or when Bluetooth was turned off.
  • We mitigated an issue that was resulting some users hitting in an unexpected error when trying to take pictures with certain USB cameras.
  • When setting up Windows Hello in OOBE, we’ve added a new link to learn more about Windows Hello.
[Chat from Microsoft Teams]
  • Arabic and Hebrew languages will now allow changing Teams Settings.
  • We fixed the issue where if you were making an outgoing call, there was no ring tone, but the user interface would show that the call is getting connected.
[Microsoft Store]

The following issues were fixed in the most recent Store updates:
  • We fixed the issue where the install button might not be functional in limited scenarios.
  • We also fixed an issue where rating and reviews were not available for some apps.

Known issues

[General]
  • We’re investigating reports from Insiders in the Beta Channel where after upgrading to Windows 11, they are not seeing the new Taskbar and the Start menu doesn’t work. To workaround this if you are impacted, please try going to Windows Update > Update history, uninstalling the latest cumulative update for Windows, and the reinstall it by checking for updates.
  • We’re working on a fix for an issue that is causing some Surface Pro X devices to bug check with a WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR.
[Start]
  • In some cases, you might be unable to enter text when using Search from Start or the Taskbar. If you experience the issue, press WIN + R on the keyboard to launch the Run dialog box, then close it.
  • System and Windows Terminal is missing when right-clicking on the Start button (WIN + X).
[Taskbar]
  • The Taskbar will sometimes flicker when switching input methods.
[Search]
  • After clicking the Search icon on the Taskbar, the Search panel may not open. If this occurs, restart the “Windows Explorer” process, and open the search panel again.
  • Search panel might appear as black and not display any content below the search box.
[Widgets]
  • The widgets board may appear empty. To work around the issue, you can sign out and then sign back in again.
  • Widgets may be displayed in the wrong size on external monitors. If you encounter this, you can launch the widgets via touch or WIN + W shortcut on your actual PC display first and then launch on your secondary monitors.
[Microsoft Store]
  • We continue to work to improve search relevance in the Store.
[Windows Sandbox]
  • Within Windows Sandbox, the language input switcher does not launch after clicking the switcher icon on the Taskbar. As a workaround, users can switch their input language via any of the following hardware keyboard shortcuts: Alt + Shift, Ctrl + Shift, or Win + Space (the third option is available only if Sandbox is full-screened).
  • Within Windows Sandbox, the IME context menu does not launch after clicking the IME icon in the Taskbar. As workarounds, users can access the functionalities of the IME context menu with either of following methods:
    • Accessing the IME settings via Settings > Time & language > Language & region > <each IME language> (e.g. Japanese) three dots > Language options > <each IME> (e.g. Microsoft IME) three dots > Keyboard options.
      • Optionally, you may also enable the IME toolbar, an alternative UI to quickly invoke specific IME functions. Continuing from above, navigate to Keyboard options > Appearance > Use IME toolbar.
    • Using the unique set of hardware keyboard shortcuts associated with each IME-supported language. (See: Japanese IME Shortcuts, Traditional Chinese IME Shortcuts).
[Localization]
  • There is an issue where some Insiders may be some missing translations from their user experience for a small subset of languages running the latest Insider Preview builds. To confirm if you have been impacted, please visit this Answers forum post and follow the steps for remediation.

Microsoft Store

We are rolling out an update for Store (version 22108.1401.11.0) to Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel that includes the following improvements:
  • A complete visual overhaul of the Library UI, with simpler navigation and better performance to boot.
The new visual overhaul of the Library page in the Microsoft Store.
The new visual overhaul of the Library page in the Microsoft Store.
  • We updated our Spotlight design for promoted products in the Microsoft Store app. Hover over an option to get a sneak peak of what’s inside.

I am behind the curve on this one. My none complaint machine told me I did not qualify for W11 when I first checked for updates. I have been on dev channel ever since. Tried to change to beta, but the options were missing. Tried several more times without any luck. After a while, I noticed that the download cu was there for .176, it installed without any issues.

So I guess I am now on the Beta channel??? but have no idea how to check.
Is it the group opinion that .176 will be the last W11 update for none complaint insiders thru Oct 5?
How are we supposed to go back to W10 after the 5th of Oct. Restore a previous W10 insider version and go from there or is W10 insiders dead?

I am going to have to get some new hardware to be compliant, MB, Ram, CPU etc on this machine. What are the chances that I will be able to "activate" the new HW stuff to W11 insiders if I use the present SSD to do that. {yes plenty of back up made) :scream:

I have one ridiculous annoyance now

my gb network card is giving me 100mbps internet speeds. I was having issues before I updated to Windows 11 where my DL speeds were around 600mbps, but uploads were 2-5mbps, my normal is usually 940/120, so something was wrong.

my backup PC/media server was getting 600/2-5 as well, so it wasn't confined to the one system - called my ISP and they said there were line issues, but today, everything is running perfectly, except on this system.

after the update, I'm now getting 100/100 in Windows 11, the media pc is getting 940/120

I uninstalled the drivers, let windows install what it thought were the best. no change

downloaded the latest version of the drivers from Lenovo, installed. no change

downloaded the latest 3 versions from Intel, the oldest wouldn't install, no support for Windows 11

the most recent, and the second most recent install no issues, but still, 100/100

that's realistically enough speed for what I need it for, but it's so much lower than it should be.

When I run a hardware diagnostic on the network card, this comes up (cable and connection tests are all perfect):

Go to "Settings", "Windows Update", "Windows Insider Program".

Is it the group opinion that .176 will be the last W11 update for none complaint insiders thru Oct 5?

Microsoft kicked many non-compliant machines off the Windows 11 Insider channels.

How are we supposed to go back to W10 after the 5th of Oct. Restore a previous W10 insider version and go from there or is W10 insiders dead?

Enrolling a computer in the Insider program should not be taken lightly, since it sometimes takes a clean install to get back to where you were.

I am going to have to get some new hardware to be compliant, MB, Ram, CPU etc on this machine. What are the chances that I will be able to "activate" the new HW stuff to W11 insiders if I use the present SSD to do that. {yes plenty of back up made) :scream:

If you upgrade an activated version of Windows 10 to Windows 11, I think you can reasonably expect an activated version of Windows 11. Both of my former Windows 10 computers are now activated Windows 11 versions.

I got a better more stable connection by changing my router and windows MTU setting from the default 1500 to what my system actually can use:
Code to test and fin value

ping www.google.com -f -l MTUvalueHERE
ex: ping www.google.com -f -l 1500
1630820912298.png
when best MTU value is found add an extra 28 bytes to leave room for the header data and then set in Windows and your router

Code to set best value in windows:
netsh int ipv4 set subinterface Ethernet mtu=YourFoundValue Here store=persistent
Ex: netsh int ipv4 set subinterface Ethernet mtu=1492 store=persistent

The reason you didn't see the taskbar and startup menu problem is because you didn't do a time sync after something was pushed to your system. I changed my default time sync to every 60 minutes from the default of every 7 days which was why it happened to me even though I was still running 22000.168 at the time it happened.
Apparently you misunderstood: the reason why I don't have problems with new taskbar and Start is due to I don't have both of them. Instead, I use the "classic" taskbar and Open-Shell Start menu, which aren't affected by last bug. Time sync works well here.

"now if it is an example, there was no information"
Ah! Ok I get it, fixed added a line I forgot, I used just my example and forgot to show how to use it.
Need more:coffee::coffee::coffee:
netsh int ipv4 set subinterface Ethernet mtu=YourFoundValue Here store=persistent
Ex: netsh int ipv4 set subinterface Ethernet mtu=1492 store=persistent

Thank you for bring it to my attention Alex :)

New Windows 11 security feature?

I received a crash report at the Store with the following error on build 10.0.22000.176

Code:
application_hang_blockedon_fileio_cfffffff_showkeyplus.exe!showkeypluswpf.mainwindow.winlist

Checking the stack trace of the crash report this came up

Code:
0 ntdll.dll ZwOpenFile 0x0000000000000014
1 KERNELBASE.dll InternalFindFirstFileExW 0x00000000000001B6

2 KERNELBASE.dll FindFirstFileW 0x0000000000000018
3 DomainNeutralILStubClass.IL_STUB_PInvoke 0x00000000000000D2
4 System.IO.File.FillAttributeInfo 0x0000000000000093
5 System.IO.File.FillAttributeInfo 0x000000000000025D
6 System.IO.File.InternalExists
---rest redacted---

This means the call to System.IO.File.InternalExists calls ZwOpenFile - this was not the case before as File.Exists did not check user permissions before indication of the presence of the file.

Testing it with Powershell reveals similar results - if run as Admin the command runs as expected. - however, if not, an Access denied error occurs and the file is indicated as not present.

I got a better more stable connection by changing my router and windows MTU setting from the default 1500 to what my system actually can use:
Code to test and fin value

ping www.google.com -f -l MTUvalueHERE
ex: ping www.google.com -f -l 1500
View attachment 7147
when best MTU value is found add an extra 28 bytes to leave room for the header data and then set in Windows and your router

Code to set best value in windows:
netsh int ipv4 set subinterface Ethernet mtu=YourFoundValue Here store=persistent
Ex: netsh int ipv4 set subinterface Ethernet mtu=1492 store=persistent

Check out this video, and others of his for good safe settings
So I figured 1490 makes it happy - 1472 pinged perfectly +28, but I have no way of changing the MTU on the modem itself, it's one of those stupid Technicolor DOCSYS modems where most of the settings are just straight up locked out - no alteration to system settings beyond basic port forwarding, and firewall security levels. Guessing that if the modem/PC don't match it isn't going to help a lot (I ran a speedtest after changing it, and instead of 100/100, it was pulling 120/80, so there was a difference, but a small difference)

Apparently you misunderstood: the reason why I don't have problems with new taskbar and Start is due to I don't have both of them. Instead, I use the "classic" taskbar and Open-Shell Start menu, which aren't affected by last bug. Time sync works well here.
Yes, I know what you meant but what I was saying was the reason others had the problem. I thought the problem was actually with Explorer.exe which was what everyone had to use as it is still at 22000.120 even with the latest builds.

What speed is the connection actually at because sometimes, you have to force the 1Gbps connection speed in the OS as the autodetect could sometimes fail.

Before the Windows 11 update, they were the same - both computers are connected via GB ethernet

I did go into the network adapter and force GB - and the diagnostics in the Intel software show connected at GB speed, aside from internet, if I'm doing a file transfer from the media server to the Windows 11 system, it runs around 30mb/sec, so internet seems to be running around 15-20% speed, local network file transfer around 35%
