UPDATE 9/9: KB5005642 Windows 11 Insider Preview Beta Build 22000.184 - Sept. 9

UPDATE 7:10PM PDT: Recently, Windows Insiders in both the Dev and Beta Channels began reporting that Start and Taskbar were unresponsive and Settings and other areas of the OS wouldn’t load. We quickly discovered an issue with a server-side deployment that went out to Insiders and canceled that deployment. If you were impacted by this issue, you can use the following steps to get back into a working state on your PC.
  • Step 1: Use CTRL-ALT-DEL and choose to open Task Manager.
  • Step 2: Choose “More details” at the bottom of Task Manager to expand Task Manager.
  • Step 3: Go to “File” and choose “Run new task”.
  • Step 4: Type “cmd” in the “Open” field.
  • Step 5: Paste the following: reg delete HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\IrisService /f && shutdown -r -t 0
  • Step 6: Hit enter, and then your PC should reboot. After rebooting, everything should be back to normal.

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22000.176 to the Beta Channel!

We are also making Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22000.176 available to commercial PCs in the Release Preview Channel. Please see this blog post for all the details.

Changes and Improvements

  • People want to get closer to the things they love, faster. This is why commonly used experiences like Search, Task View, Widgets and Chat are pinned to the Taskbar in Windows 11. To manage which of these icons are pinned to the Taskbar in one place, simply right-click on the Taskbar and select “Taskbar settings” to open the Taskbar Settings page and choose which system icon to hide. If you hid any of these system icons previously and want to unhide them – you can do this via the Taskbar Settings page.
Simply right-click on the Taskbar and choose “Taskbar settings” to choose which system icons appear.
Simply right-click on the Taskbar and choose “Taskbar settings” to choose which system icons appear.

Fixes

[General]
  • We fixed an issue with paired Bluetooth LE devices that was causing an increase in Bluetooth reliability issues and bugchecks after resume from hibernate or when Bluetooth was turned off.
  • We mitigated an issue that was resulting some users hitting in an unexpected error when trying to take pictures with certain USB cameras.
  • When setting up Windows Hello in OOBE, we’ve added a new link to learn more about Windows Hello.
[Chat from Microsoft Teams]
  • Arabic and Hebrew languages will now allow changing Teams Settings.
  • We fixed the issue where if you were making an outgoing call, there was no ring tone, but the user interface would show that the call is getting connected.
[Microsoft Store]

The following issues were fixed in the most recent Store updates:
  • We fixed the issue where the install button might not be functional in limited scenarios.
  • We also fixed an issue where rating and reviews were not available for some apps.

Known issues

[General]
  • We’re investigating reports from Insiders in the Beta Channel where after upgrading to Windows 11, they are not seeing the new Taskbar and the Start menu doesn’t work. To workaround this if you are impacted, please try going to Windows Update > Update history, uninstalling the latest cumulative update for Windows, and the reinstall it by checking for updates.
  • We’re working on a fix for an issue that is causing some Surface Pro X devices to bug check with a WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR.
[Start]
  • In some cases, you might be unable to enter text when using Search from Start or the Taskbar. If you experience the issue, press WIN + R on the keyboard to launch the Run dialog box, then close it.
  • System and Windows Terminal is missing when right-clicking on the Start button (WIN + X).
[Taskbar]
  • The Taskbar will sometimes flicker when switching input methods.
[Search]
  • After clicking the Search icon on the Taskbar, the Search panel may not open. If this occurs, restart the “Windows Explorer” process, and open the search panel again.
  • Search panel might appear as black and not display any content below the search box.
[Widgets]
  • The widgets board may appear empty. To work around the issue, you can sign out and then sign back in again.
  • Widgets may be displayed in the wrong size on external monitors. If you encounter this, you can launch the widgets via touch or WIN + W shortcut on your actual PC display first and then launch on your secondary monitors.
[Microsoft Store]
  • We continue to work to improve search relevance in the Store.
[Windows Sandbox]
  • Within Windows Sandbox, the language input switcher does not launch after clicking the switcher icon on the Taskbar. As a workaround, users can switch their input language via any of the following hardware keyboard shortcuts: Alt + Shift, Ctrl + Shift, or Win + Space (the third option is available only if Sandbox is full-screened).
  • Within Windows Sandbox, the IME context menu does not launch after clicking the IME icon in the Taskbar. As workarounds, users can access the functionalities of the IME context menu with either of following methods:
    • Accessing the IME settings via Settings > Time & language > Language & region > <each IME language> (e.g. Japanese) three dots > Language options > <each IME> (e.g. Microsoft IME) three dots > Keyboard options.
      • Optionally, you may also enable the IME toolbar, an alternative UI to quickly invoke specific IME functions. Continuing from above, navigate to Keyboard options > Appearance > Use IME toolbar.
    • Using the unique set of hardware keyboard shortcuts associated with each IME-supported language. (See: Japanese IME Shortcuts, Traditional Chinese IME Shortcuts).
[Localization]
  • There is an issue where some Insiders may be some missing translations from their user experience for a small subset of languages running the latest Insider Preview builds. To confirm if you have been impacted, please visit this Answers forum post and follow the steps for remediation.

Microsoft Store

We are rolling out an update for Store (version 22108.1401.11.0) to Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel that includes the following improvements:

I'm curios as to what caused it. Seeing your post made me want to test my system. My OptiPlex is running Windows 10, and Windows 11. Intel Wifi 6 AX200.

Thinking of upgrading to a Gen 10 processor or maybe wait till gen 12.
I think we're going to see some pretty dramatic generational changes for the next few generations - My media server, an i7-4770k, doesn't perform much worse than a 9th gen, or even 11th when it comes to "normal" tasks - I doubt it would be good for gaming, but Intel is completely changing their architecture for 12th gen

mix of performance cores and low power cores to free up the performance cores for the heavy lifting, but Intel seems to frequently botch launches of new products in the first generation - not to say they will, but since the original Pentiums, seems to be better to wait a year or two for them to really get a handle on how they perform in the real world, and tweak them so they get as much out of the design as they can

I suspect 11th gen is going to be the pinnacle of the current architecture, I'd say skip 12/13 and go for 14th gen - and see what AMD's Zen 4 does too, because their generational improvements have been very impressive. Having AMD and Intel competing on almost equal footing is pushing both to improve faster than they seem to have planned originally.

I should have saved the settings first so I could compare the changes - but I wasn't really worried about putting it back, if it had broken the network I would have just uninstalled the adapter and did a clean install with default settings, and didn't think it was going to make anything worse.

It's funny, if someone had told me I'd complain about only getting 100/100 internet 5 years ago I would have laughed and just thought they were ridiculous

I thought a very similar thing the other day when I put a "new" Intel wireless card in my laptop. It's wifi 5 and can get more than what my internet provides. My previous card was wifi 4 and only got roughly 54-60Mb I was like, you know... once upon a time 50Mb was insane speed...

It's crazy that a good AX/6 connection can compete with 2.5gb ethernet if you have a solid connection and compatible hardware. I go into clients who are still using N300, and it's painful to use.

Honestly, I need to get a new modem. It's maxed out at roughly 300Mb.

My office, boss decided to upgrade to gigabit internet - but he didn't think that through very well, because he was using a Meraki MX that capped out at I think 300mbps for throughput.

We had to find a new firewall that would actually use the bandwidth, and at the time, most of the available options for SMB just did not, like, we looked at Sonicwall, Sophos, Meraki, Fortinet, and HPE, and most of the SMB options were just not good enough - you had to bump up to enterprise level to get the speeds our stupid little cable modem could handle. Wound up paying 2 grand for a Sophos. Now it's better, you can get GB business firewalls for 1/4 of that, but they didn't make them a couple years ago because why would a small business pay $1000+ a month for a gigabit connection, right?

Go to "Settings", "Windows Update", "Windows Insider Program".
Ben when I do this and choose insider Program, there are no options. A message says that I don't meet the minimum HW requirements. see attached.
If you upgrade an activated version of Windows 10 to Windows 11, I think you can reasonably expect an activated version of Windows 11. Both of my former Windows 10 computers are now activated Windows 11 versions.
When you did this, was it with all new pc hardware or your present HW? I have to upgrade HW to meet minimums. I was wanting to know if an activated W10, now running W11 insiders .173 on my present HW, if I had a chance to activate with new HW and go on without a clean install to continue with W11 insiders i.e. 22449? Ben when I do this and choose insider Program, there are no options. A message says that I don't meet the minimum HW requirements. see attached.

This means that the computer is not enrolled in the Insider program.

When you did this, was it with all new pc hardware or your present HW?

Neither of my Windows 10 computers meet the requirements for Windows 11, but both also have processors that are unsupported under Windows 10. I'm prepared to reinstall Windows 10 if something goes wrong.

I'm not sure what you're asking here, since you've apparently already upgraded your computer to Windows 11. Many new computers come with an activated version of Windows 10 and some are being marketed as "Windows 11 ready".

I am going to build my own machine with parts from various vendors while keeping my PC case only. :scream: I then will insert my SSD with version .176 on it and see how it goes. 1. Will it run? 2. Will it activate? Tx Ben

I am going to build my own machine with parts from various vendors while keeping my PC case only. :scream: I then will insert my SSD with version .176 on it and see how it goes. 1. Will it run? 2. Will it activate? Tx Ben

I don't know any way to tell in advance if that will work.

I think that's the whole point because unlike the old days as in pre 2010 era which is basically the new hardware will be way more advance than the software and newer software will slow down hardware to help each other, the hardware can handle the new releases of software and OSes just fine so thee only way for people to get new hardware is if the OS has minimum requirements so you will have to buy new hardware to use it. Ofcourse the apps for the OSes can always update the minimum OS version required so if they say 11 is the minimum version then you will still have to buy newer versions of the app as you can't use the newer app versions without first needing a OS version upgrade which requires a upgrade in hardware.

Good thinking, but I don't know how acquiescent Apps are going to be to the new hardware requirements, but it remains to be seen how it will all play out. Luckily, I have one machine that has easily passed the PC Health check and that will give me the opportunity to play a bit with Win 11 and deal with any compatibility issues between hardware and software. Only time will tell and the deadline is not that far away...October 5th, that is.

I am behind the curve on this one. My none complaint machine told me I did not qualify for W11 when I first checked for updates. I have been on dev channel ever since. Tried to change to beta, but the options were missing. Tried several more times without any luck. After a while, I noticed that the download cu was there for .176, it installed without any issues.

So I guess I am now on the Beta channel??? but have no idea how to check.
Is it the group opinion that .176 will be the last W11 update for none complaint insiders thru Oct 5?
How are we supposed to go back to W10 after the 5th of Oct. Restore a previous W10 insider version and go from there or is W10 insiders dead?

I am going to have to get some new hardware to be compliant, MB, Ram, CPU etc on this machine. What are the chances that I will be able to "activate" the new HW stuff to W11 insiders if I use the present SSD to do that. {yes plenty of back up made) :scream:

The answer to your question "How are we supposed to go back to W10 after the 5th of Oct. Restore a previous W10 insider version and go from there or is W10 insiders dead?"

goes like this:

If you decide you don’t like Windows 11 or have issues with it and want to go back to Windows 10, you can easily do so within 10 days of upgrading. If you wait more than 10 days, you’ll have to reinstall Windows 10.

You will have to reinstall some software after rolling back to Windows 10, but your data should be preserved. However, it’s a good idea to back up your data anyway. If you’re using a laptop, it’s also a good idea to keep it plugged in while the rollback happens.

So it was the MTU setting that caused it?
It wasn't MTU, the optimal settings put MTU back to 1500

Mentioned in the other post I didn't actually look at the settings before/after, but I did note that change

I'm skeptical that MS won't provide security updates to unsupported Windows 11 installations. Statements to that effect seemed like an empty threat. MS hasn't asked my approval for their policies, I admit.

I have little personal stake in that. My desktop PCs are complaint with "enhanced hardware security" requirements. I suppose that I'd like to upgrade my incompatible (Gen 6 Intel CPU) laptop as well, but it's not vital.
I think there are 2 scenarios for updating on computers that don't meet minimum requirements

Scenario A is an unsupported CPU, with some kind of TPM, secure boot, and so forth - you get a warning that it might be more buggy, and that's on you, but it allows you to upgrade with no blocks, and Windows Updates work normally. There may be an annual update in 2022 or 2023 that changes this, and you'll be stuck on the build from the year before. They do say that there are 50% more crashes, and that the systems with the minimum requirements are 99.8% stable - but 50% more crashes means instead of .02% likelihood of a crash/bugcheck, you're looking at .03% - not the huge difference the 50% number is probably meant to imply.

Scenario B is you have an unsupported CPU, and no TPM, the installer says no, you can't do this, so you pull a Windows 11 ISO and clean install it anyways, and Microsoft isn't keen on allowing it to update (they probably will in the end, because Windows 11 machines getting hammered by discovered security holes looks bad for them, even if they told you not to do it)

Just to be safe, I took an Acronis image of my system - if it gets blacklisted, I'll go back to that build state of 10, and I can pull any changed files from a more recent backup.

1. It may run if the minimum win 11 requirements are met
2. It will likely not activate. If you have a digital license tied to some piece of the hardware you will need to call MS. If you have a purchased key then enter that info.
