UPDATE 10/21: KB5006746 Windows 11 Cumulative Update Preview Build 22000.282 - Oct. 21

October 12, 2021 - KB5006674 (OS Build 22000.258)

For information about Windows update terminology, see the article about the types of Windows updates and the monthly quality update types. For an overview of Windows 11 (original release), see its update history page.

Note Follow @WindowsUpdate to find out when new content is published to the release information dashboard.

Highlights

  • Updates security for your Windows operating system.

Improvements and fixes

This security update includes quality improvements. Key changes include:
  • Addresses known compatibility issues between some Intel “Killer” and “SmartByte” networking software and Windows 11 (original release). Devices with the affected software might drop User Datagram Protocol (UDP) packets under certain conditions. This creates performance and other issues for protocols based on UDP.
For example, some websites might load slower than others on the affected devices, which might cause videos to stream slower in certain resolutions. VPN solutions based on UDP might also be slower.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new fixes contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

For more information about the resolved security vulnerabilities, please refer to the Security Update Guide website and the October 2021 Security Updates.

Windows 11 servicing stack update - 22000.190

  • This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Known issues in this update

Microsoft is not currently aware of any issues with this update.

How to get this update

Before installing this update
Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

Windows Update and Microsoft UpdateYesNone. This update will be downloaded and installed automatically from Windows Update.
Windows Update for BusinessYesNone. This update will be downloaded and installed automatically from Windows Update in accordance with configured policies.
Microsoft Update CatalogYesTo get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.
Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)YesThis update will automatically sync with WSUS if you configure Products and Classifications as follows:
Product: Windows 11
Classification: Security Updates

If you want to remove the LCU
To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

Just Done second computer, all fine. I don't think my killer cards were the affected ones as my machine is still like lightning so it's hard to tell if there is any improvement.

Happy to report that it installed on my non compliant machine.
Not on any preview plaform. Can not tell you how long it took .
Just woke up after a coke and cig. I noticed the reset icon clicked it and within 45 seconds after the restart it was installed.
Makes me wonder if ms is going to tease us and keep us in suspense.
Its about time they give us a honnest answer if auto updates are goinig to continue or not.

Thanks for the reminder to use UUPDump, @BunnyJ and @Josey Wales

My non-compliant is an i7-7700, and no sluggishness at all. Just shut down and did a cold boot. Twenty seconds flat from first power-button push to working desktop.

(I often wonder about the reports we see here of amazingly fast boot times. Are they timing from the entry of a password to a working desktop? I've seen under-10-second boot times reported. My manufacturer's LOGO is on screen for almost that long.)

Anyway, I'm starting out with a new i5-8400 later today, and wondering whether I'll see any performance difference between i5-8400 and i7-7700. Is i7 faster than i5? Is 8400 faster than 7700? I'm not worried; just thinking about this.

Cornish Rattler reports sluggish startups since the 258 build. The-Hive responded:
Mine seems exactly the same CornishRattler
Does that mean that you, too, are experiencing sluggishness, or that your boot times seem exactly the same as they were before?

I often wonder about the reports we see here of amazingly fast boot times. Are they timing from the entry of a password to a working desktop?
Typically they are timing a full shutdown and restart to the desktop, and for consistent comparable results using this....

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Thanks for that information, Bree. I really didn't know that.

But I see people claiming 4- to 10-second startups all the time, and I don't think they're lying, I just think they're timing something different from what I time when I check my startups.

When I said sluggish, it would get to the log in screen pretty quickly but then start to stutter quite badly and take an age to load anything for 2-3 minutes. I've clean installed now from a UUP iso and now everything is back as it should be.

But I see people claiming 4- to 10-second startups all the time, and I don't think they're lying, I just think they're timing something different from what I time when I check my startups.
Yes. probably time to the desktop on first powering up (and likely with fast start up enabled). My Dell 5410 does that in under 20 seconds.

For comparable results you need to compare like with like. My unsupported System Two manages the restart test in 154 seconds.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop.

Finished it too on my PC. Need to note that first attempt to install this update froze in 69% and eventually failed, because I decided to restart PC after waiting about 30 min (all other today's updates were successfully installed before). However, check for update again caused re-downloading the files, and second time it was successful. I suppose that first time something was damaged.

Although MS warned users about no further updates for non-compliant systems, apparently it doesn't affect Insiders.
Sometimes when WU is installing multiple updates a update will fail until another update is installed first.

I doubt it.. I suspect the performance will be around the same.

When I said sluggish, it would get to the log in screen pretty quickly but then start to stutter quite badly and take an age to load anything for 2-3 minutes. I've clean installed now from a UUP iso and now everything is back as it should be.
Glad that's all ok (y)

Cornish Rattler reports sluggish startups since the 258 build. The-Hive responded:

Does that mean that you, too, are experiencing sluggishness, or that your boot times seem exactly the same as they were before?

    MS Defender and Malwarebytes Free
Can someone tell me how to get this VBS re-start time script without having to create a Windows 7 forum account to get it since I won't be using the forum ever again. I wanna time my PC's but can't get the script without an account.
If you like, here's a BAT version of it.
