Have been struggling with trying to get this update installed. After the installation completes 30% the machine boots to finish the install but then hangs with the spinning dots and never fully completes the upate. Tried using stand alone installer and had the same issue. I got fed up and wound up installing KB5015882 which is the .832 OS Build which installed fine without any issue. Wonder if there's a bug in KB5016629 that's causing this problem since I've ruled out everything in my machine. All the other updates that were downloaded post Aug 9, 2022 went in fine with no problem. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Use Windows Update Troubleshooter.

  • Right-click on Start button and pick Settings
  • Go to System > Troubleshoot
  • Click on Other Troubleshooters > Windows Update and click Run button.

Resetting the Windows Update components can usually solve these types of issues.

FreeBooter I had tried the troubleshooter with no luck. I tried the .Bat file to reset Windows Update and still have the same issue with spinning dots after restart. I am begnining to suspect a bug in the KB5016629 update that only occurs with certain installations. I did the updat on my laptop and didn't have any issues which is because the OS build was much older I think. The machines with newer build like 795 & 832 likely only get certain modules from the cumulative update and that may be the reason why it's failing. The fact that I was able to install the 832 build without issue confirms that my machine is fine and no driver issues.

If you're feeling adventurous, you might try getting the latest build from uupdump.net
and doing a repair install/upgrade, choosing to keep everything.

Thanks FB. Glad to see that others are having similar issues like mine. I too blocked the update with WUSHOWHIDE for now. Hope Microsoft fixes it soon especially since they force these updates on to the machine with no mechanism to block updates.

Scott I did try to do a full in-place upgrade using the latest iso from Microsoft and ran into the same exact issue with the boot. There's some anomaly in the new Security Update that's affecting only some machines and not all.

@slcidea , the latest ISO you get from MS is build 22000.318

You need a ISO with a build equal to or greater than the build you currently have.
That's why I suggested getting the latest ISO from uupdump

What they give you is a script that compiles all the necessary files from MS to create the latest ISO.

Scott, thanks for the advise. Never thought microsoft would give you such an outdated build ISO of .318. I was already at .795 build before I attempted the KB5016629 update which brings it to .856. Right now I am running .832 after applying KB5015882 without any hitch. I may experiment with your suggestion on a clone disk. Don't usually trust 3rd party sources for microsoft updates.

Lottiemansion couldn't deactivate .NET 3.5, doing so generates an error code. Hopefully MS will come up with a patch to fix this or might be better to wait until 22H2 comes out in Fall.

Don't usually trust 3rd party sources for microsoft updates.

Totally safe. The script they give you downloads the files from the Microsoft servers to compile the ISO. I did the repair/upgrade on build 795 with the ISO from UUPDump, worked like a charm. Next best thing to a "clean install".

OS course I had a current system image to fall back on if things went awry.

Thanks Scott. Looks like an online equivalent of Slipstream that I used back in the XP days to make a custom XP installation disc with all the updates. May give it a shot.
