Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22621.450 and Build 22622.450 (KB5016700) to the Beta Channel. In addition to the handful of fixes and improvements noted below, this update includes improvements to how we apply updates on top of each other as well.
  • Build 22622.450 = New features rolling out.
  • Build 22621.450 = New features off by default.
As a reminder, Insiders who landed in the group with new features turned off by default (Build 22621.xxxx) can check for updates and choose to install the update that will have features rolling out (Build 22622.xxx).

Fixes included for BOTH Build 22621.450 & Build 22622.450​

This update includes the following improvements:
  • New! We enhanced Microsoft Defender for Endpoint’s ability to identify and intercept ransomware and advanced attacks.
  • New! We compressed a file regardless of its size if you have configured Server Message Block (SMB) Compression.
  • New! We improved storage replication that occurs over low bandwidth or congested wide area networks (WAN).
  • We fixed an issue that causes Windows to display tablet mode features for some devices that do not have touchscreens.
  • We fixed an issue that causes some application windows to have blank sections in the Task View preview.
  • We fixed an issue that occurs for some of you when you copy files from network drives. The error code is 0x80070026.
  • We fixed a token leak issue in the LsapGetClientInfoEx
  • We fixed an issue that, in certain cases, causes sihost.exe to use a high amount of the CPU.
  • We fixed an issue that causes Microsoft Edge to stop responding when you use IE mode. This issue also prevents you from interacting with a dialog.

Known issues​

[General]​

  • There is an issue in the recent Beta Channel updates that is causing the Photos app to crash, and a fix will be rolling out soon via a Photos app update via the Store.
  • We’re investigating reports that SQL Server Management Studio is failing to launch for some Insiders.
  • [NEW] We’re looking into reports that audio stopped working for some Insiders after upgrading to Build 22622.440.

[File Explorer]​

  • The left-half of the File Explorer title bar may not be draggable via mouse or touch.
  • The up arrow is misaligned in File Explorer tabs. This will be fixed in a future update.

About the Beta Channel​

The Beta Channel will be the place we preview experiences that are closer to what we will ship to our general customers. Because the Dev and Beta Channels represent parallel development paths from our engineers, there may be cases where features and experiences show up in the Beta Channel first. However, this does not mean every feature we try out in the Beta Channel will ship. We encourage Insiders to read this blog post that outlines the ways we’ll try things out with Insiders in both the Dev and Beta Channels.

File explorer and explorer.exe are just 2 names for the same thing. Most of the problems were happening when tabs and new navigation pane are enabled. No problems without those 2 extra features. I don't use StarDock Start11. 🤣🤣🤣

I know what he's talking about as I went through it for a while myself on earlier builds and it was very frustrating as my taskbar kept on restarting but didn't restart all of my apps.

yep, exactly. four-finger swipes for me between desktops is a guaranteed crash. guess I'll record it for the Feedback Hub.

The file manager is called File Explorer in Windows 11, and has been called that since Windows 8. Windows 7 was the last OS to call it Windows Explorer. Same thing, different name - it's always been explorer.exe. Explorer.exe is running as the desktop, run a second instance and you'll open File Explorer.

The file manager on Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 is renamed File Explorer ....

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

You can disable it using vivetoool if you enabled it initially. In the end, I cannot see point really - you don't have to use tab feature.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22557, you can now customize your pinned apps on the Start menu by organizing them into folders. You can add more apps to a folder, rearrange apps within a folder, and remove apps from a folder.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

Anybody else have this problem with File Explorer? I lost Desktop, Documents, Download, Image, Music, Video folders and the background become white.

The folders have been removed from "This PC" as part of the new redesign of File Explorer and the navigation pane, but you can add the folders back using the tutorial below if wanted.

The white background may be a glitch. You could see if toggling light and dark mode again may sort it.

You haven't lost anything, you have the new look File Explorer that Microsoft are currently A/B testing. Those folders have been moved, they are now shown in Home rather than This PC. You should also note that your File Explorer now has tabs.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
Microsoft responded to one of my bug reports on the explorer Windows opening with white backgrounds when dark mode is being used. Workaround is to simply close the window and then immediately reopen it, and it will display properly in dark mode. Microsoft told me they had fixed this in the Dev channel build they released (yesterday?), but the build numbers in my bug reports were al BETA channel builds, so go figure...;) I guess it will eventually be fixed in the Beta channel.

Great New system. Exceeds my expectations by quite a bit, btw. I love the USB G8 SoundBlaster, it's quite an improvement over the G6!
Perhaps not recommended, but, you can also deactivate the new Navigation Pane with the ViveTool.

That is correct. You just drag and drop one icon over another and it creates a folder

I was wondering if there was a way to add those back. It just looks weird. I never used them or anything. . Just looks a bit weird. . lol
