  • Staff
UPDATE 1/26:

January 10, 2023 - KB5022303 (OS Build 22621.1105)

Important: For Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) devices, see the Special instructions for Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) devices in the How to get this update section to address security vulnerabilities in CVE-2022-41099.

For information about Windows update terminology, see the article about the types of Windows updates and the monthly quality update types. For an overview of Windows 11, version 22H2, see its update history page.

Note Follow @WindowsUpdate to find out when new content is published to the Windows release health dashboard.

For more information about the tips included in this month's video, please see the following links:

Highlights

  • This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

Improvements

This security update includes quality improvements. When you install this KB:
  • This update addresses issues that affect the Local Session Manager (LSM). These issues might allow users who do not have admin rights to perform actions that only an admin can.
  • This update addresses a known issue that affects apps that use Microsoft Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) SQL Server Driver (sqlsrv32.dll) to connect to databases. The connection might fail. You might also receive an error in the app, or you might receive an error from the SQL Server.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

For more information about security vulnerabilities, please refer to the Security Update Guide website and the January 2023 Security Updates.

Windows 11 servicing stack update - 22621.898

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Known issues in this update

Applies toSymptomWorkaround
IT adminsUsing provisioning packages on Windows 11, version 22H2 (also called Windows 11 2022 Update) might not work as expected. Windows might only be partially configured, and the Out Of Box Experience might not finish or might restart unexpectedly. Provisioning packages are .PPKG files which are used to help configure new devices for use on business or school networks. Provisioning packages which are applied during initial setup are most likely to be impacted by this issue. For more information on provisioning packages, please see Provisioning packages for Windows.

Note Provisioning Windows devices using Windows Autopilot is not affected by this issue.
Windows devices used by consumers in their home or small offices are not likely to be affected by this issue.
If you can provision the Windows device before upgrading to Windows 11, version 22H2, this will prevent the issue.

We are presently investigating and will provide an update in an upcoming release.
IT adminsCopying large multiple gigabyte (GB) files might take longer than expected to finish on Windows 11, version 22H2. You are more likely to experience this issue copying files to Windows 11, version 22H2 from a network share via Server Message Block (SMB) but local file copy might also be affected.Windows devices used by consumers in their home or small offices are not likely to be affected by this issue. To mitigate this issue, you can use file copy tools that do not use cache manager (buffered I/O). This can be done by using the built-in command-line tools listed below:

robocopy \\someserver\someshare c:\somefolder somefile.img /J

or

xcopy \\someserver\someshare c:\somefolder /J

We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

How to get this update

Special instructions for Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) devices

Devices with Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) will need to update both Windows and WinRE to address security vulnerabilities in CVE-2022-41099. Installing the update normally into Windows will not address this security issue in WinRE. For guidance on how to address this issue in WinRE, please see CVE-2022-41099.

Before installing this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

The problem here is that you are trying to run the script directly from a UNC path. The same error would happen on a native Windows PC if I tried to run the script from a network share using its UNC path...

...the solution would be to first map a network drive to the UNC path so you can then run the script from a drive letter.
Well, that will take some time for me to figure that out -- if ever. If I fail again, I noticed that I might still be able to change back to Release Preview since there is new Release build available today and the selection is not grayed-out.

I was unsuccessful with the .1105 install and WUPD automatically updated to the current Beta 22621.1180. I assume the only way out of the Insider Program is a clean install.

Technically, yes.

However, you can try to leave the Insiders program, and *then* try an in-place upgrade with the public release .ISO, and it might work.

But short of a clean install, I suggest leaving the program and waiting until the public release is a newer version than the Insider's Preview build you have installed now, and then do the in-place upgrade if Windows Update does not offer the new public release automatically. If that still fails, then the clean install may be your only option.

Thanks. Because of my poor internet throughput, I am limited in my ability to experiment with Win 11 issues since I must perform any major downloads after midnight to before dawn. During the remainder of the day, my internet access is non-existent, < dialup speeds or at best ~ 150 Kbps

Yes, for 6 years I used Starband & WildBlue satellite internet services, both with high latencies, frequent buffering, and no service at all during inclement weather and user overloading. I am currently using cell phone tower service. The problem with all such services is overloading of users. In my area of the southwestern US, for 5 months of the year winter visitors (snowbirds) from northern climes overload all the cell tower systems resulting in high latencies, sometimes in the 4,000 ms range. That is true with all companies/carriers. Others I know change carriers and end up with the overloading of the new carrier since the companies do not upgrade to new towers and oversell their products with unlimited speed plans. My son and his family live in the midwestern US and they have the same problem in the summer with an influx of visitors/tourists while I have the problem with winter visitors.

Hughes Net (with terrible service reviews) and Starlink (with good latency from lower satellite orbits) are the only other satellite options. I will never return to using satellite internet because they will oversell their products as others have done and I prefer not to support more satellite space “junk” since for ~ 7 months of the year (and from midnight to several hours afterward during fall/winter months) my throughput with low latency of 100 ms (vs 4000 ms) or less are very good 24/7. I do not want to disparage other users of whatever internet service they must use; however, I prefer a terrestrial based system over any satellite service given the costs are comparable and the “infrastructure” involved with each.

All good things in due time, I don't like forcing things. My machine is runnin' okay and it'll be added when patch tues. rolls around on valentines day.

I've gone through the "growing years" of early win10 updates with upwards of 3 or more revisions of a CU and I decided to get off that merry-go-round so I let the CU's sit until WU decides its time to add.

It has gotten better but not by much.

Yes, these Preview updates are only an early chance to get the non-security patches that will be in the next Patch Tuesday CU. The PT CU is the only one to have any new security fixes.

Sometimes they are worth installing if they address an issue you may have on your PC. For the most part they don't, so I don't bother installing them.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

My habit for many years has been to check "Updates" as the first thing I do when opening my computer. Whatever updates are there, they get installed. I've never had a problem or thought that I should be doing anything differently.
