  • Staff
UPDATE 1/26:

January 10, 2023 - KB5022303 (OS Build 22621.1105)

Important: For Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) devices, see the Special instructions for Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) devices in the How to get this update section to address security vulnerabilities in CVE-2022-41099.

For information about Windows update terminology, see the article about the types of Windows updates and the monthly quality update types. For an overview of Windows 11, version 22H2, see its update history page.

Note Follow @WindowsUpdate to find out when new content is published to the Windows release health dashboard.

For more information about the tips included in this month's video, please see the following links:

Highlights

  • This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

Improvements

This security update includes quality improvements. When you install this KB:
  • This update addresses issues that affect the Local Session Manager (LSM). These issues might allow users who do not have admin rights to perform actions that only an admin can.
  • This update addresses a known issue that affects apps that use Microsoft Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) SQL Server Driver (sqlsrv32.dll) to connect to databases. The connection might fail. You might also receive an error in the app, or you might receive an error from the SQL Server.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

For more information about security vulnerabilities, please refer to the Security Update Guide website and the January 2023 Security Updates.

Windows 11 servicing stack update - 22621.898

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Known issues in this update

Applies toSymptomWorkaround
IT adminsUsing provisioning packages on Windows 11, version 22H2 (also called Windows 11 2022 Update) might not work as expected. Windows might only be partially configured, and the Out Of Box Experience might not finish or might restart unexpectedly. Provisioning packages are .PPKG files which are used to help configure new devices for use on business or school networks. Provisioning packages which are applied during initial setup are most likely to be impacted by this issue. For more information on provisioning packages, please see Provisioning packages for Windows.

Note Provisioning Windows devices using Windows Autopilot is not affected by this issue.
Windows devices used by consumers in their home or small offices are not likely to be affected by this issue.
If you can provision the Windows device before upgrading to Windows 11, version 22H2, this will prevent the issue.

We are presently investigating and will provide an update in an upcoming release.
IT adminsCopying large multiple gigabyte (GB) files might take longer than expected to finish on Windows 11, version 22H2. You are more likely to experience this issue copying files to Windows 11, version 22H2 from a network share via Server Message Block (SMB) but local file copy might also be affected.Windows devices used by consumers in their home or small offices are not likely to be affected by this issue. To mitigate this issue, you can use file copy tools that do not use cache manager (buffered I/O). This can be done by using the built-in command-line tools listed below:

robocopy \\someserver\someshare c:\somefolder somefile.img /J

or

xcopy \\someserver\someshare c:\somefolder /J

We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

How to get this update

Special instructions for Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) devices

Devices with Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) will need to update both Windows and WinRE to address security vulnerabilities in CVE-2022-41099. Installing the update normally into Windows will not address this security issue in WinRE. For guidance on how to address this issue in WinRE, please see CVE-2022-41099.

Before installing this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

Multi-boot Windows 11 & 10 - RTM, RP, Beta, and Dev
After performing required restart of laptop after installation of KB5022303, laptop is not able to connect to the home mesh wifi network (Eero).

After uninstallation of KB5022303, laptop has zero issues connecting to home mesh wifi network.

Wifi card of the laptop is onboard MediaTek MT7921 Wi-Fi 6 card.

Issue only exists with usage of the onboard wifi card, usage of a USB external wifi dongle has zero issues connecting to home mesh wifi network.

Any suggestions? Thank you all very much in advance!!!
Check with manufacturer for an updated driver, if not.......

Driver may need to be uninstalled and reinstalled. Easy to do..... first uninstall the card in Device Manager, including the tick box for Delete Driver. Then reboot. System will reinstall the driver.

Windows 11 Pro (Activated) Beta Build/Version 22621.1180/22H2
Several others here have also experienced the Install error - 0x800f081f with this update.

The following is my build information and failed attempts at installation. Any suggestions or steps others have taken to resolve this issue are appreciated.
Following up from my previous post:

After numerous Win Update retry attempts and these steps, installing KB5022303 continued to fail:

  • Ran Win Update Troubleshooter
  • Cleared Win Update Cache (Deleted Software Distribution Folder items)
  • Checked Disk for Errors
  • Ran System File Checker (sfc /scannow)
  • Restore and Repair System Files (dism….)
  • Attempted numerous manual installations via Windows update standalone installer
I ended up installing the optional OS Build 22623.1095 over my previous 22621.1095 Build and then the KB5022303 option was no longer available. I assume now the only way I am able to leave the Insider Program is to do a clean install because I have never seen an opportunity to leave the program even though I was queued for unenrollment.

I would have thought that you could do an in-place repair install using the RTM 22621 ISO. You should be allowed to keep your installed apps and files as 22623 and 22621 share a common set of system files.

Alternatively you may be able to uninstall the feature update enablement packages that turned on the 22623/22622 features and return your build to 22621.

trying to get out of the Insider program and back to RTM has always been slightly cloudy. Yes, you can un-enroll but that will not magically put you back. A clean install is necessary. If by chance you have an OS backup, not restore point, to before you went to Insider, restoring it will work.

Microsoft has a RAW picture codec but I have never gotten it to work.
@geneo, are your RAW files Canon or Nikon?

If Canon perhaps this may be of interest to you - Camera Raw Codec download - Windows 10 (see post by Ten Kate)

Also, I'm curious as to what "Microsoft RAW picture codec" you're referring to? Link? I can't even find in Microsoft Store.

Anyway, being I Shoot RAW with a Nikon D850, I had to download the RAW Codec from Nikon so that my RAW files may be displayed in Explorer. Never downloaded any Microsoft codecs. Never even knew there might be any thus my question above.

Windows 11 Pro (Activated) Beta Build/Version 22621.1180/22H2
I would have thought that you could do an in-place repair install using the RTM 22621 ISO. You should be allowed to keep your installed apps and files as 22623 and 22621 share a common set of system files.

Alternatively you may be able to uninstall the feature update enablement packages that turned on the 22623/22622 features and return your build to 22621.

Thank you

The KB5018863 Enablement Package is available to uninstall in the Uninstall Update section. For clarification, will uninstalling that remove the "Feature Update" Windows 11 Insider Preview 10.0.22623.1095 (ni_release) and return me to the previous version Windows 11 Insider Preview 22621.1 (ni_release)? I am unsure of the Features Update & the Enablement Package connection.

I didn't install an IP build on my system and I don't have the host system on the IP program, so WTF?

Sigh.

But wait, no, if you go to UUPDUMP and click on 22H2 you get this:

And 1037 is listed there.

Sooooo, we can probably, correctly, assume UUPDump done went and put 1037 in the wrong slot! I went from .963 to .1105. And, just clean installed .1105 on a friend's lappy.

Got 22621.1105 Pro for the clean install from UUPDump, so maybe they quickly fixed their mess?

"trying to get out of the Insider program and back to RTM has always been slightly cloudy. Yes, you can un-enroll but that will not magically put you back. A clean install is necessary. If by chance you have an OS backup, not restore point, to before you went to Insider, restoring it will work."

One forum member likened trying to leave the program as remaining in Hotel California.

Thank You.

I am unsure of the Features Update & the Enablement Package connection.
The 22621 system files contain the 22623 features, but in a dormant state. The enablement package turns on the dormant features and bumps the major build number up to 22623. Uninstalling it will turn off the features and drop the build from 22623.1095 back to 22621.1095.

Thank you for your precise explanation, which is characteristic of your posts within this forum. Your first post was very clear although your last statement helped me understand the process completely.

@Dru2

Canon. That link refers to old software no longer supported.

Search RAW Image Extension in the Store. It is slow to populate and even trigger image thumbnail creation. For instance it would not populate thumbnail images but then I open a canon raw image in the Microsoft Pictures app, and all of a suden they all get populated. It is very quirky.

The FastPictureviewerCodecPack worked perfectly. It populated the thumbnails automatically and quickly, did all kinds of cameras raw formats: Nikon, Canon, Sony ..., and other types like Photoshop PSD files, TIFF images, etc. etc. It hasn't been updated for some years so I expect that after the latest release it is toast - unless it is a Microsoft bug.

Thanks.
Search RAW Image Extension in the Store.
Yeah, I found it now. Anyway, I was just curious, as I don't need it as I shoot with Nikon, so I deal with NEF (Nikon RAW) files.

I did have to download the Nikon NEF codec to view my Nikon D850 files. Never needed it for my Nikon D800 files.
