UPDATE 1/26:

January 10, 2023 - KB5022303 (OS Build 22621.1105)

Important: For Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) devices, see the Special instructions for Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) devices in the How to get this update section to address security vulnerabilities in CVE-2022-41099.

For information about Windows update terminology, see the article about the types of Windows updates and the monthly quality update types. For an overview of Windows 11, version 22H2, see its update history page.

Note Follow @WindowsUpdate to find out when new content is published to the Windows release health dashboard.

For more information about the tips included in this month's video, please see the following links:

Highlights

  • This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

Improvements

This security update includes quality improvements. When you install this KB:
  • This update addresses issues that affect the Local Session Manager (LSM). These issues might allow users who do not have admin rights to perform actions that only an admin can.
  • This update addresses a known issue that affects apps that use Microsoft Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) SQL Server Driver (sqlsrv32.dll) to connect to databases. The connection might fail. You might also receive an error in the app, or you might receive an error from the SQL Server.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

For more information about security vulnerabilities, please refer to the Security Update Guide website and the January 2023 Security Updates.

Windows 11 servicing stack update - 22621.898

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Known issues in this update

Applies toSymptomWorkaround
IT adminsUsing provisioning packages on Windows 11, version 22H2 (also called Windows 11 2022 Update) might not work as expected. Windows might only be partially configured, and the Out Of Box Experience might not finish or might restart unexpectedly. Provisioning packages are .PPKG files which are used to help configure new devices for use on business or school networks. Provisioning packages which are applied during initial setup are most likely to be impacted by this issue. For more information on provisioning packages, please see Provisioning packages for Windows.

Note Provisioning Windows devices using Windows Autopilot is not affected by this issue.
Windows devices used by consumers in their home or small offices are not likely to be affected by this issue.
If you can provision the Windows device before upgrading to Windows 11, version 22H2, this will prevent the issue.

We are presently investigating and will provide an update in an upcoming release.
IT adminsCopying large multiple gigabyte (GB) files might take longer than expected to finish on Windows 11, version 22H2. You are more likely to experience this issue copying files to Windows 11, version 22H2 from a network share via Server Message Block (SMB) but local file copy might also be affected.Windows devices used by consumers in their home or small offices are not likely to be affected by this issue. To mitigate this issue, you can use file copy tools that do not use cache manager (buffered I/O). This can be done by using the built-in command-line tools listed below:

robocopy \\someserver\someshare c:\somefolder somefile.img /J

or

xcopy \\someserver\someshare c:\somefolder /J

We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

How to get this update

Special instructions for Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) devices

Devices with Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) will need to update both Windows and WinRE to address security vulnerabilities in CVE-2022-41099. Installing the update normally into Windows will not address this security issue in WinRE. For guidance on how to address this issue in WinRE, please see CVE-2022-41099.

Before installing this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Anybody seeing lots of dllhost.exe errors in reliability history?
I tracked this down to some codecs I had installed to view RAW image file thumbnail preview called FastPictureView. That is one of the things DLLHost.exe handles. The codecs are pretty old and apparently not compatible with this version of Windows 11. Microsoft has a RAW picture codec but I have never gotten it to work. Sigh. I guess I will have to figure out what is wrong with it. It is installed as store App, but I cannot find a way to uninstall it, but if I go to the store it thinks it is installed.

I have two video codecs installed through the Store.

To uninstall them look in Settings > Apps > Installed apps. You could also try the Advanced options first to see if a Reset or Repair will fix it.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

After installing this update yesterday for some reason twice today it redownloaded and installed again although it didn't require reboots today. Pretty squirrely behavior though.

That's wacky behavior I usually only see with pre-Windows 10 1903, LOL. (Windows 8x to earlier Windows 10)

I likely saw that the most with 10 1507, 1511 and 1607, IIRC.

(not the re-download, but if it "double-installs")

I know right, I manually checked for updates twice today and both times it downloaded and installed again. The update history now shows todays install date although I've been running it since yesterday 10 Jan.

I know right, I manually checked for updates twice today and both times it downloaded and installed again. The update history now shows todays install date although I've been running it since yesterday 10 Jan.
Any new Windows Update error codes in the event log for patch-Tuesday?

22621.1037 is also an IP build, btw

I didn't install an IP build on my system and I don't have the host system on the IP program, so WTF?

Sigh.

But wait, no, if you go to UUPDUMP and click on 22H2 you get this:

And 1037 is listed there.

I have two video codecs installed through the Store.

View attachment 49715

To uninstall them look in Settings > Apps > Installed apps. You could also try the Advanced options first to see if a Reset or Repair will fix it.

So as I said, Microsoft RAW Image extensions did not show up in installed apps, control panel -> programs and features. or any other Microsoft lists.

However Revo Uninstaller was able to see the app and uninstall it. I then reinstalled he app from the store. It installed fine but guess what? It still doesn't show up in any of the Microsoft app lists. Guess that is just the way it is.

It works now, but pupulates the thumbnails for RAW images much slower than the FastPictureViewer codecs did. Another issue of my list.

Also have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 and already a member of windows 11 and was a member of windows 10 under a different name.

Also have a Samsung watch 5, Samsung Series 7 55 inch TV, and a Samsung Galaxy 22 Ultra phone.

And all three of these can get windows 11 and 12 so never out of touch
Several others here have also experienced the Install error - 0x800f081f with this update.

The following is my build information and failed attempts at installation. Any suggestions or steps others have taken to resolve this issue are appreciated.

I am still an IP Beta User queued for unenrollment and I thought this update signaled that I might be unenrolled since the previous Cumulative updates included the “Windows Insider Preview” notation:

Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Insider Preview (10.0.22621.1095) (KB5022364) compared to :

2023-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for arm64-based Systems (KB5022303)

Incidentally, I assumed I would be able to unenroll when the last major Windows update occurred last Sept/Oct.
although I never noticed the opportunity to unenroll.

After performing required restart of laptop after installation of KB5022303, laptop is not able to connect to the home mesh wifi network (Eero).

After uninstallation of KB5022303, laptop has zero issues connecting to home mesh wifi network.

Wifi card of the laptop is onboard MediaTek MT7921 Wi-Fi 6 card.

Issue only exists with usage of the onboard wifi card, usage of a USB external wifi dongle has zero issues connecting to home mesh wifi network.

Any suggestions? Thank you all very much in advance!!!
