Win Update KB5030310 Windows 11 Cumulative Update Preview Build 22621.2361 (22H2)

UPDATE 10/10:

 Microsoft Support:

September 26, 2023 - KB5030310 (OS Build 22621.2361) Preview

For information about Windows update terminology, see the article about the types of Windows updates and the monthly quality update types. For an overview of Windows 11, version 22H2, see its update history page.

Note Follow @WindowsUpdate to find out when new content is published to the Windows release health dashboard.

Tip: There are more new features available in the configuration update. To learn how to get them, see the September Windows configuration update.

Highlights

  • New! This update introduces websites to the Recommended section of the Start menu. These websites will be personalized for you and come from your browsing history. This gives you quick access to the websites that are important to you. You can remove any website URL from the Recommended section using the shortcut menu. To turn off the feature, go to Settings > Personalization > Start. You can adjust settings for all recommended content on the Start menu on this Settings page. Commercial customers can manage this feature using a policy.

  • This update addresses an issue that affects Microsoft Excel. It stops responding when you try to share a file as a PDF in Outlook.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects the Korean touch keyboard. It completes the first character in the search box on the taskbar. This is not expected.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects the search box tooltip. It does not appear in the correct position.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects the search button. It disappears when you interact with the search flyout box.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects sleep mode. After you resume from sleep, a blank window appears that has the title "Windows Input Experience.”
  • This update addresses an issue that affects iCloud Calendar and Contacts. Outlooks fails to properly sync them when you use the iCloud for Windows app. To resume syncing, follow the steps in this Apple Support article.

Improvements

This non-security update includes quality improvements. When you install this KB:
  • New! This update completes the work to comply with the GB18030-2022 requirements. It removes and remaps characters for Microsoft Wubi input and Microsoft Pinyin U-mode input. You can no longer enter character codepoints that are not supported. All the required codepoints are up to date.
  • This update supports daylight saving time (DST) changes in Greenland.
  • This update changes the spelling of Ukraine's capital from Kiev to Kyiv.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects account lockout event 4625. The format of the event is wrong in the ForwardedEvents log. This occurs when an account name is in the user principal name (UPN) format.
  • This update affects the Key Distribution Center (KDC) and user security identifiers (SID). KDC now reads the user SID from the Subject Alternative Name (SAN) of a certificate. Because of this, mobile device management (MDM) providers can use offline templates to fill in the user SID. To learn more, see KB5014754.
  • This update addresses an issue that is related to changes in the forwarding of events.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects events that have a TAB character. The events do not render, or you cannot forward them.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects XPath queries on FileHash and other binary fields. It stops them from matching values in event records.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects an Application Virtualization (App-V) environment. Copy operations within it stop working. This occurs after you install the April 2023 update.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects Microsoft Print to PDF. It uses the metadata for the name you sign in with as the author of a printed PDF. It should use the display name instead.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects some USB printers. Microsoft Defender stops them from printing.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC). AppID Tagging policies might greatly increase how long it takes your device to start up.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects IMEPad. It stops working. This occurs when you enter end-user-defined characters (EUDC).
  • This update addresses an issue that affects Remote Apps. The display of some elements is not aligned correctly.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (DTC). It has a handle leak. Because of this, the system runs out of memory.
  • This update addresses an issue that might make Windows stop responding. This might occur if you use Microsoft OneDrive files that are compressed by NTFS.
  • This update addresses an issue that might cause a user-mode memory leak. It might occur when you call CopyFile() or MoveFile().
  • This update addresses an issue that affects application compatibility. It is related to Microsoft Defender for Endpoint.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects external binding. It fails. This occurs after you install Windows updates dated May 2023 or later. Because of this, there are issues that affect LDAP queries and authentication.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update - 22621.2351

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Known issues in this update

Applies toSymptomWorkaround
IT adminsUsing the FixedDrivesEncryptionType or SystemDrivesEncryptionType policy settings in the BitLocker configuration service provider (CSP) node in mobile device management (MDM) apps might incorrectly show a 65000 error in the "Require Device Encryption" setting for some devices in your environment. Affected environments are those with the “Enforce drive encryption type on operating system drives” or "Enforce drive encryption on fixed drives" policies set to enabled and selecting either "full encryption" or "used space only". Microsoft Intune is affected by this issue but third-party MDMs might also pe affected.

Important This issue is a reporting issue only and does not affect drive encryption or the reporting of other issues on the device, including other BitLocker issues.
To mitigate this issue in Microsoft Intune, you can set the “Enforce drive encryption type on operating system drives” or "Enforce drive encryption on fixed drives" policies to not configured.

We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.
All usersWindows devices using more than one (1) monitor might experience issues with desktop icons moving unexpectedly between monitors or other icon alignment issues when attempting to use Copilot in Windows (in preview).
To prevent users from encountering this issue, Copilot in Windows (in preview) might not be available on devices that have been used or are currently being used in a multimonitor configuration.

We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.
All usersThird-party wallpaper apps might not work as expected when Copilot in Windows (in preview) is opened. You might see the default wallpaper or the wallpaper set in Windows instead of your custom wallpaper set in the third-party wallpaper app. This issue is addressed in KB5031455.

To prevent users from encountering this issue, Copilot in Windows (in preview) was previously unavailable on devices that have a third-party wallpaper app installed.

How to get this update

Before installing this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

Install this update

Release ChannelAvailableNext Step
Windows Update or Microsoft UpdateYesGo to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. In the Optional updates available area, you’ll find the link to download and install the update.
Windows Update for BusinessNoNone. These changes will be included in the next security update to this channel.
Microsoft Update CatalogYesTo get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.
Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)NoYou can import this update into WSUS manually. See the Microsoft Update Catalog for instructions.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

I see @memo09 also has CSearch as a consequence of disabling the advertising in the search box. You also lose the easy ability to paste directly into the box in this state.

That screenshot is from user @Bree. I have not CSearch, but use the Search box in the taskbar without Bing Widget integration. I disabled all widgets, as well as Bing/Edge apps. I use Google and ChatGPT for my search activity, along with the Everyhing app from Voidtools (voidtools), using Chrome as my default browser.

It's not actually the letter 'C', it's the magnifying glass icon, but displayed a little to far to the right so it gets truncated. Compare 'Search icon and label' with 'Search box' to see what I mean. Note the large whitespace to the left of the icon in 'Search icon and label', it's much smaller in 'Search box'.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Despite massive Hub Feedback to the contrary, the buffoons in MS still persist in keeping the recommended section of the start menu.

Any MS lurkers here - get it 100% clear - Nobody wants the pox ridden Recommended Section. Get rid of it now.

I sign in with a Local account. The minimum requirement seems to be that you have an MS account available for other apps to use, not that you have to sign in to Windows with it.

Hi Bree,
Not the case here, I have MS Accounts for other MS Apps, but Copilot did not show up on all but one.
All the feature IDs for Copilot were enabled.
As soon as I switched the login of windows to MSA it came up immediately.
After that I switched back to Local account and Copilot remained available.
This problem only happened with Build 22621.2361 and 22631.2361, never had any issues with Local accounts with Dev and Beta in the same machines.
Looks like MS is trying to push to use MS accounts. 😂😂😂🤬🤷‍♂️

Same here,

I turned off Copilot because it messes up my Desktop when it opens the stupid Side Bar. Why don't they use just a standard window instead of this nonsense on the right of the screen?

Thanks Bree, I sort of realised that :-) The ad in the search box only appeared yesterday (before I had applied any updates). I like the long oblong search box but not with the ridiculous icon of the day ad in it.

When I remove that icon (and get CSearch ;-)) it seems you lose this right click option which is useful where it is:

1695840545157.png

Something else I noticed and this was really strange was that the Feedback Hub (I whinged about the way it was displayed) took over twenty minutes gathering and sending data. My HDD space dropped by 5 GB and the network showed it was sending data at around 10 to 15 Mbps for all that time period. Never seen anything like that before.

The feedback reporting do-dah did clean up afterwards and space returned to normal. All very odd.

Have to say updates like these seem to be simply change for changes sake and ultimately can be very frustrating.

Just downloaded and installed (out of curiosity really) but after rebooting, the toolbar doesn't display shortcut icons. I have now uninstalled the update and PC is back to normal. I'll wait!!

This is weird, this machine on public Build 22621.2361 yesterday had the new Spotlight UI, today it is back to the old one.
Can they ever make up their mind at MS?

Changed back to the old UI on Sept 27, 2023, 8:47 PM Pacific time. 😂😵‍💫🤷‍♂️

The update went very well.

In the first 1TB M2 SSD, after running the sfc /scannow command, he found something that he had to correct; in the second M2 SSD, however, it found nothing.

I live in the EU and Copilot is not present, unfortunately.

Hello.
If you live in the European Union you can try Copilot by clicking Windows+R and executing the following command without quotes:
"microsoft-edge://?ux=copilot&tcp=1&source=taskbar".
However this will not activate the Copilot,
You will have to repeat the command whenever you want to use it.

;-).

Regards!

Hello.
If you live in the European Union you can try Copilot by clicking Windows+R and executing the following command without quotes:
"microsoft-edge://?ux=copilot&tcp=1&source=taskbar".
However this will not activate the Copilot,
You will have to repeat the command whenever you want to use it.

;-).

Regards!

That is weird.
I live in Portugal, I don't have Copilot on the taskbar and the tip above works well for me.

I just found out from listening to a video with Paul Thurrott the reason Europeans are not getting CoPilot and the rest is, the stupip DMA(Digital Markets Act) from the European union.
It's the same BS like with the Edge Integration and Teams Integration

Have a good read: About DMA.

But the DMA has some good stuff:

Example of the “don'ts”: gatekeepers will for example no longer:

1. treat services and products offered by the gatekeeper itself more favourably in ranking than similar services or products offered by third parties on the gatekeeper's platform;
2. prevent consumers from linking up to businesses outside their platforms;
3. prevent users from un-installing any pre-installed software or app if they wish so;
4. track end users outside of the gatekeepers' core platform service for the purpose of targeted advertising, without effective consent having been granted.

#2 like start and widgets not letting you use the browser of choice.
#3 like after this update DEV Home(Preview) was forced installed on my PC(I'm not a software developer so don't need it) and there is no uninstall button. Or also to uninstall widgets, you must use Powershell as there is no button to do it(The Xbox thingy too)
