Solved KB5031455 won't install on either of my computers

@Miguelgrado

Indeed! Malwarebytes Premium was the culprit for at least some of us. Hopefully, the problem will be fixed by the time the preview update is released as an RTM update on Patch Tuesday.

Glad to hear it worked for you. Have a great day.

Regards,
Phil

Well, it seems that the culprit is Malwarebytes premium...
Not for me as I don't run it on any of my machines and KB5031455 wont install on any of them :(

I tried every which way to get this to install. Every trick in the book. Final solution was to disable Malwarebytes from start up, then do the update, which always failed on reboot. Doing this it installed first time.

I have tried all of the typical recommended steps for several days but have not been able to get this update to install. However, I do have Malwarebytes Premium, so I followed Miguelgrado's suggestion to disable Malwarebytes. It worked. Malwarebytes was the culprit. It's a safe bet that Malwarebytes should be disabled every time you have a Windows update.

My 4th one wouldn't get KB5031455 until I noticed it didn't get KB5027397 so got that .zip file on 11/2, installed and all became good. Just checked the Update Catalog and it's no longer available.

Hmm, according to the write up KB5031455 must be installed to enable the installation of KB5027397 as I show below, not the other way round. And if it dependent (as they say) how did you manage to install KB5027397 without KB5031455 being installed?

...
Prerequisites

Before updating to Windows 11, version 23H2 using an enablement package, you must be running Windows 11, version 22H2. You must have the following prerequisite installed before applying this update:

Restart information
...

BTW - I still cant get KB5031455 to install :(

Not really sure about the chronology/effect of the 2 installs, just compared my 3 machines and notice that one KB was missing on the 4th machine so installed it and the other KB installed to get 23H2.

This is the download I used.

Thanks for the file. I have installed it (took absolutely ages to reboot and had me worried) and installed KB5031455 upon reboot, though strangley it doesn't show on the list of installed updates and is no longer appearing as an option.

What on earth is going on - I guess we will never know

Thanks Again

Ah well, it was good try - the problematic KB5031455 reappeared and yet again it failed to install with the usual 0x800f081f error. Tried all the usual tricks again, all to now avail.

Hopefully MS knows about this and they will issue a fix in the next round of updates.

Generally not. KB5031455 is a PREVIEW of Nov 14th's patch Tuesday's update therefore I assume it was not tested by MB just like they do not test insider builds.

The true test is if the final fails on Nov 14.

Anyone find a fix for this yet, tried all the files above with no avail, tried uninstall malware bytes free, tried the troubleshooter, tried like 10 forum posts, I'm at my wits end I think the only last option may be a reinstall of windows

Just for lol. Does your search still work after attempting this update?

This specific update literally made Windows unusable. So I completely restarted all my setups, took windows offline and butchered it.

And now use "Everything" to do searches, as the indexing and searching literally failed on me in various ways.

Firstly, it literally didn't work.
Secondly, it didn't want to work after various attempts, Microsoft support fumbling on my pc was not even amusing, just utterly sad.
Third, after a new install, supposedly after finishing indexing which took literal days on full speed. It failed, it literally excluded files.

If you go have a look. You'll see search/indexing is inherently broken, and often simply fails/ isn't available for some.

Windows 11 was useless. Spent weeks hacking at it.

    Beyond sick and tired.

I was supposed to work a month ago... That was then...
