Solved KB5031455 won't install on either of my computers

As the title says, this update won't install on either of my computers either via Windows Update or after downloading the .msu file and manually running the installation.

The symptoms are the same for both computers; the updated files are copied to the hard drive but on re-start it gets to about 94% and then a message box pops up saying something went wrong, don't worry the update is being removed. The computer then tries to install the update another couple of times before eventually resorting to the previous status.

My current version of W11 on both computers is 22H2, build 22621.2428

I've had this with previous updates but can't for the life of me remember how I got around that. Any ideas, please?

Not seeing any issue yet, got it on a Win11 Pro Desktop overnight, Win11 Home Notebook yesterday, doing a Home Desktop and a Pro Notebook just now.

I've come to the conclusion KB5031354/5 - Windows 11 Build 22621 / 22631.2428 - screwed up Windows Update.

I am also unable to do a repair / in-situ install from subsequent .ISOs (created using UPPDUMP) and various other 'solutions'.

I've therefore decided to wait for the RTM version of Windows 11 23H2 November(?) Update (on 14 Nov 2023?) as it's only going to be be a few more days to get the authorised Media Creation Tools and then do a clean install.

Hello

The same thing happens on one of my computers. I've already tried everything and nothing. It crashes to 94% and undoes changes. We have to wait for the November update and see if it installs correctly.

In any case, with the 23H2 being released, it can be installed on the system itself with the media creation tool without having to format, in case the problem continues from windows update

Do a repair install using the MS ISO, it will check for updates during the repair and should give you the latest update. Technically it will downgrade you to 22621.1702 (the latest MS ISO version) and then upgrade

I had the same issue with my Dell XPS 8930 on Thursday. It rolled back out eventually, but I did not even attempt to install that Update on my Dell XPS 15 7590 laptop.

Like everyone else, I am just going to wait it out. I have better things to do than waste 30 minutes trying to successfully install a buggy update.

I had the same issue with my Dell XPS 8930 on Thursday. It rolled back out eventually, but I did not even attempt to install that Update on my Dell XPS 15 7590 laptop.

Exact same install failures on XPS-8930 and G5-5000 machines. Recovery from failure should be smoother.

YES! Using Malwarebytes Premium. Turned it off and turned off auto-start with Windows boot-up.
Did sfc / scannow and 2 disms. The KB5031455 package installs without issue. THANKS FOR SUGGESTION.

Thanks for the "heads-up." I disabled Malwarebytes Premium and stopped it from starting upon reboot. The update went in perfectly.

As the title says, this update won't install on either of my computers either via Windows Update or after downloading the .msu file and manually running the installation.
I've managed to resolve my - our?- issue!!

See messages #13 thru #16 in this thread.

I stopped Malwarebytes loading at boot and successfully ran the .msu manually.

Well, it seems that the culprit is Malwarebytes premium. I disabled the startup with windows and in addition the self-protection module and shields, then closed it completely from icon next to the clock and the update was installed without problems
