Insider KB5034402 Windows 11 Insider Canary Build 26016.1012 (23H2) - Dec. 15

UPDATE 1/03:

 Windows Blogs:

UPDATE 12/15: We are starting to roll out Cumulative Update Build 26016.1012 (KB5034402). This update does not include anything new and is designed to test our servicing pipeline for builds in the Canary Channel.

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26016 to the Canary Channel. We are releasing ISOs for this build – they can be downloaded here. This will be our last Canary Channel flight until January 2024.

REMINDER: As builds released to the Canary Channel are “hot off the presses,” we will offer limited documentation for builds flighted to the Canary Channel including documenting only the most significant and highly impactful known issues. Please note that we will not publish a blog post for every flight – only when new features are available in a build.

What’s new in Build 26016

Windows Protected Print Mode

Windows protected print mode lets your PC exclusively print using the Windows modern print stack which is designed to work with Mopria certified printers only. With Mopria certified printers, users no longer must depend on third-party software installers as well as get additional security benefits. Print devices will “just work” resulting in a safe and streamlined installation and printing process. Read more about the security benefits of switching to IPP printing here.

Here is how you can enable Windows protected print mode. These instructions are also published in a Quest for Insiders in Feedback Hub:
  1. Press Start.
  2. Open the Local Group Policy Editor.
  3. Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Printers.
  4. Right click on ‘Configure Windows protected print’ and click ‘Edit’.
  5. Select the ‘Enabled’ radio button.
  6. Click ‘Apply’ and click ‘OK’.
  7. Windows protected print is now enabled.
FEEDBACK: Please file feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Devices and Drivers > Print.

Changes and Improvements

[Taskbar & System Tray]

  • Added an icon to the “Diagnose network problems” entry when right clicking the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar.

[Settings]

  • [ADDED] We’re beginning to rollout a change that renames the Phone Link settings page under Settings > Bluetooth & devices to Mobile devices. As part of this change, a new section will appear for allowing a PC to access mobile devices – this section currently does not introduce anything new yet and we’ll have more to share in a future flight.

The Phone Link settings page is being renamed to Mobile devices.
The Phone Link settings page is being renamed to Mobile devices.

Fixes for known issues

  • Fixed an issue causing WinRE (Windows Recovery Environment) to not render correctly in the previous flight.
  • Fixed an issue causing keyboard shortcuts to not work on the desktop – including using the delete key to delete files off of your desktop, CTRL key combos to take action on desktop icons, or using ALT + F4 on the desktop to open the shutdown dialog.
  • Fixed an underlying issue causing the details pane in File Explorer to unexpectedly take keyboard focus sometimes.
  • Fixed an issue causing it to not be possible to save changes to shortcuts (.lnk) in the previous flight, as they would cite something was using the process.
  • We did some work to help improve the performance of loading Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  • Fixed an issue where Settings was crashing when attempting to navigate to the “System and Reserved” section under System > Storage.

Known issues

[General]

  • [REMINDER] Some popular games may not work correctly on the most recent Insider Preview builds in the Canary Channel. Please be sure to submit feedback in Feedback Hub on any issues you see with playing games on these builds.
  • We’re investigating an issue where the print queue is showing a messaging saying it can’t find the app when opened.
  • [NEW] We’re investigating an issue causing a small number of Insiders to not be able to open Settings after the previous flight. If you are impacted, please see this forum post for a workaround.
  • [NEW] Navigating to Settings > Power will crash Settings on this build. As a workaround, you can use commands to configure power modes on your device. powercfg /overlaysetactive will set the active user configured power mode, powercfg /q OVERLAY_SCHEME_CURRENT will get the active user configured power mode. For more information on using powercfg to adjust these settings, click here.

[Widgets]

  • You may experience a loading delay when the Microsoft Start feed is reenabled.
  • Announcements from the Microsoft Start feed are still shown on the taskbar after the feed is hidden.
  • The Widgets Board should automatically close and reopen when enabling or disabling feeds.
  • Keyboard navigation from settings subpages back to the top-level Settings page is broken.
  • Incorrect spacing and fonts used in some settings pages.

For developers

You can download the latest Windows Insider SDK at aka.ms/windowsinsidersdk.

SDK NuGet packages are now also flighting at NuGet Gallery | WindowsSDK which include:
These NuGet packages provide more granular access to the SDK and better integration in CI/CD pipelines.

SDK flights are now published for both the Canary and Dev Channels, so be sure to choose the right version for your Insider Channel.

Remember to use adaptive code when targeting new APIs to make sure your app runs on all customer machines, particularly when building against the Dev Channel SDK. Feature detection is recommended over OS version checks, as OS version checks are unreliable and will not work as expected in all cases.

About the Canary Channel

The Canary Channel is the place to preview platform changes that require longer-lead time before getting released to customers. Some examples of this include major changes to the Windows kernel, new APIs, etc. Builds that we release to the Canary Channel should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows and some of the changes we try out in the Canary Channel will never ship, and others could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready.

The builds that will be flighted to the Canary Channel are “hot off the presses,” flighting very soon after they are built, which means very little validation and documentation will be done before they are offered to Insiders. These builds could include major issues that could result in not being able to use your PC correctly or even in some rare cases require you to reinstall Windows. We will offer limited documentation for the Canary Channel, but we will not publish a blog post for every flight – only when new features are available in a build.

Our Canary Channel won’t receive daily builds; however, we may ramp up releasing builds more frequently in the future.

The desktop watermark you see at the lower right corner of your desktop is normal for these pre-release builds.

*Availability of Copilot in Windows:
Copilot in Windows in preview is being rolled out gradually to Windows Insiders in select global markets. The initial markets for the Copilot in Windows preview include North America, United Kingdom and parts of Asia and South America. It is our intention to add additional markets over time.

Couple Canary with unsupported app porting, and behaviour is unexpected - hmmmm .
Even you cannot expect MS to check to this level?

Even if it was possible I would never ever uninstall the Get Started App. It's the most useful App MS ever came out with. I just don't see life worth living without it.

Well, it took 7 failed tries. All supposedly successful, all 26016.1000. It wasn't until 26016.1012 that WU finally d/l the PROPER sized build (4.4GB). Every 7 failed 1000 builds, WU was only pulling 800MB before saying to restart, which would fail, because $WindowsBT was that size, versus 1012's 4.4GB. Got there in the end.

VMware WS 17.5 on Manjaro 23.10 kernel 6.6 current. Got a QEMU/KVM connection but it's acting weird and won't export existing machines I'll work on that. Anyway this desktop was imported during Windows install. Of course the programs aren't - only their icons.

Hey guys!

I know this has been addressed before, but I cannot find the exact post or thread. I have, again, the infamous issue of 'Xbox Identity Provider' not being able to be updated from the Microsoft Store. Can anyone give me the link to where it was explained, or tell me how to properly fix it, please?

Thanks in advance, and happy holidays, everyone!

Check this link, the solution is by installing an old Xbox Identity Provider package and then let the store do the update to bring it up to the latest version. You may need to use translation for the web site.

Here is another confusing one that was reported also on previous Canary Builds, I just got it on this latest Canary Build 26016.1012.
I could now reproduce the bug on 2 different desktops that have both an on-board Graphics Intel adapter and NVIDIA RTX Display adapter.
When using Multiboot with Canary build set as default system, the BOOT menu is missing and shows a black screen instead.
Eventually the boot menu times out, and Canary build completes the boot and shows up on the main screen.
This was quite tedious to figure out and to isolate the culprit, but I finally solved the puzzle on 2 of my desktops.
In my case this bug is caused by one of those experimental features that MS enables without warning for their A/B testing.
The experimental feature causing the problem is this one below. I just disabled it and the problem is gone. 😉
I also checked on another desktop with similar configuration that did not show the same problem and, sure enough, that feature was not enabled.
I just enabled it manually and I could reproduce the same exact bug. 🤐😎

[19043985] (BrokeredDisplays_ConsoleSessions)
Priority : Service (4)
State : Enabled (2)
Type : Experiment (1)

When that feature is enabled, the menu below tries to go to the on-board display adapter, which in my case did not have any screen attached.
My main screen is connected on the NVIDIA RTX and remains black till the boot menu times out waiting for a selection, then the boot finally completes, and the Canary build comes up.
Note that all the other non-Canary builds never had this issue on the same machine configuration because they never had this experimental feature enabled. 😎🤐
As usual MS uses the insiders' machines as Guinea pigs without warning. 🤬
This was quite an annoying bug; the workaround was to avoid setting Canary as the default boot system, which is not very practical when you do frequent updates on that system.

Merry Christmas!

Which problems are you referring to? The Multiboot menu? What is your desktops configuration for the display adapters?
The problem only happens if you have that experimental feature ID enabled. MS may experiment only on some machines not all insiders.
In my case it was on one recently upgraded to 26016.1012 from DEV 23606.
Do you know how to use ViveTool 0.3.3?
You can check if that feature is enabled with the command below.
Assuming you are familiar with the tool, just let me know what it shows on your Canary systems.

D:\Vivetool>vivetool /query /id:19043985

I'm refering to the multiboot problem. I only have the multiboot menu for Windows 11 Canary, Macrium and EaseUs. When my Canary builds get updated I have to include the Windows Roll Back to the Menu list except on my old desktop. For whatever reason the Roll Back never gets added on my old desktop even though the Windows.old folder does get added.

Different case, I have multiboot for different windows systems, not any other stuff. Also 2 Display adapters on each desktop.
An Intel on the motherboard + an NVIDIA RTX on PCI bus.
Anyway, you may still check if that experimental feature is enabled or not.
You need ViveTool for that, if you are not familiar with that tool, you can find instructions for downloading it and how to use it to display the status of the features and/or enable or disable them.

My boot selection window is a different issue to yours. No dedicated GPU just an AMD apu CPU. Half the screen black with the other half showing the boot selection but in weird colours. Going back to an older GPU driver fixes it. Strangely it doesn't affect another AMD system but that system does have a dedicated Nvidia card. 🤷‍♂️

System sound on the volume slider works after the frigg though.
