Win Update KB5041865 Windows 11 Cumulative Update Preview build 26100.1591 (24H2) on Copilot+ PCs - Aug. 27

UPDATE 9/10:

  Microsoft Support:

August 27, 2024 - KB5041865 (OS Build 26100.1591) Preview

For information about Windows update terminology, see the article about the types of Windows updates and the monthly quality update types.

Note Follow @WindowsUpdate to find out when new content is published to the Windows release health dashboard.

Important: Windows 11, version 24H2 is targeting Copilot+ PCs devices and devices that were previously using Windows Insider 24H2 builds.

Highlights

Gradual rollout

These might not be available to all users because they will roll out gradually.
  • [Widgets Board] We are rolling out an update to the Widgets Board to improve security and the APIs for creating widgets and feeds for users in EEA regions. As part of this update, the Microsoft Start Experiences app will power the Microsoft Start widget and feed experiences. Also, as part of this update, some existing widgets will be removed and others will be modified, temporarily affecting their functionality. This update sets the foundation for new widgets and other features in development, set to roll out soon.
  • [Windows Share] New! You can now share content to your Android device from the Windows Share window. To do this, you must pair your Android device to your Windows PC. Use the Link to Windows app on your Android device and Phone Link on your PC.

  • [File Explorer]
    • When you press Windows logo key + E, a screen reader might say a pane has focus, or the focus might not be set at all.
    • When you press Ctrl + F, sometimes the search does not start.
    • Keyboard focus sometimes might get lost when you press Shift + Tab.
    • Screen readers do not announce when you open or browse items that are in a breadcrumb of the Open or Save dialog.
    • Screen readers do not announce when you open or browse items in the column header.
  • [Narrator] This update makes scan mode respond quicker. This is especially helpful when you use Microsoft Edge and read large documents. To use scan mode, you must turn on Narrator first (Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter). Then, turn on scan mode by pressing Caps lock + Spacebar during a Narrator session.

Improvements

This non-security update includes quality improvements. Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.
  • [FrameShutdownDelay] The browser ignores its value in the “HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main” registry key.
  • [Domain Name System (DNS)] A deadlock occurs in the domain controller (DC) when it starts up in the DNS client.
  • [OpenSSH] This update adds a prompt that asks you to confirm when you turn on OpenSSH using the Server Manager UI.
  • [Unified Write Filter (UWF) and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM)] An SCCM task to re-enable UWF fails because of a deadlock in UWF. This stops the device from restarting when you expect it.
  • [vmswitches] They fail to enumerate using Get-VMSwitch command.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5042114) - 26100.1591

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Known issues in this update

Microsoft is not currently aware of any issues with this update.

How to get this update

Before you install this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

Install this update

To install this update, use one of the following Windows and Microsoft release channels.

AvailableNext Step
Yes (Windows Update)Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. In the Optional updates available area, you will find the link to download and install the update.
Yes (MSU)To get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

File information

For a list of the files that are provided in this update, download the file information for cumulative update 5041865.

For a list of the files that are provided in the servicing stack update, download the file information for the SSU (KB5042114) - version 26100.1591.

Friends, can we download this update via Windows Update Catalog instead of downloading it from the insider section? Will it be installed?

yes it on windows update too

Do you think I should install it? If you have installed it, I wonder how your experiments are? I think this was the version that stated that there was an improvement in performance in games and other issues, I wonder if you can comment on this issue in a short way.

Nobody can say that you will not get issues.

Make an image backup of current installation, update and try it, restore image backup if any (unlikely) issues.

If really not sure, wait until officially issued.

Can anyone confirm whether the Recall feature in 26100.1591 functions on a PC that isn't Copilot+?

Just curious. I can't imagine using it.
To reply to myself:

Lacking a response, I re-installed Recall on my PC. Even though I very much don't want it.

It does not run.

I wonder why it's installed, but disabled?

Uninstalled again.

It'll be interesting to see what path MS takes in the released version, due in the next month or (?).

Uninstalled this KB5041865, System became very unstable immediately after the update, it was rock solid stable prior to this but after the update ive seen UI freezes, Games like Diablo 4 locking up the system and random reboots without anything in event viewer.

Of note is the system was rock solid stable prior to the update, but began having issues immediately afterwards.

AMD Ryzen 5900x , X570 Aorus Master, 48gb ram, 5700XT, Latest GPU and Chipset drivers etc.

I've had no issues with this build, but I don't game.

It's possible that your experience may not be reproduced by other users.

It would be cruel to suggest a clean install of Windows, to minimize the possibility of a corrupted OS. :(

all updates in build 26100 are the same as home pro and iot enterprise LTSC

The same file is valid for all, there is no different kb for each edition.
including windows server 2025 also uses the same file as w11 26100 you can download the server 2025 cumulative update and install it on w11 24h2 which will also work

working fine on my iot Enterprise Pro release both as a VM and a physical machine (BTW which I run from an external USBC->Nvme 2TB adapter == on the laptop I'm using it's better than the older classical SSD internal disk !!! -- remember though when updating to a newer build ensure the reg key "PortableOperatingSystem" if it exists is set to '0' and not '1' and reboot before attempting the update otherwise you'll get message "Windows can't be installed / updated to an external USB device !!.

I have a load of Windows installs on the 2TB device - different language, different apps etc -- using vhdx's on a very fast Nvme device makes a lot of extra possibilities feasable -- saves cluttering up a single Windows instance with multi languages, multi apps etc etc.

Another trick is to update a VM ist and then clone / copy to a real machine -- update drivers etc afterwards - Windows 11 these days is quite sophisticated in being restored to "different hardware".

Cheers

While this update installed fine for me, I've now opted out of the Release Preview and the Windows Insider programme completely for now following issues with Star Wars: Outlaws and Avatar: Frontier of Pandora on Windows 11 24H2. Granted, those are the only two games affected by being on a release preview build but it is still annoying to discover that I cannot play a game properly that I paid for because it crashes every 10-20 minutes.

Hopefully, whatever it is with Windows 11 24H2 that is causing these crashes will be addressed before the official release otherwise more people are going to be experiencing this. Not sure if this is a specific problem with the games themselves (since both use the Snowdrop engine and have RT features that cannot be disabled) or with Windows 11 24H2 itself. Hopefully, it is the former because Microsoft don't have a very good track record in my opinion for fixing issues like this...

Anyway, I am going to be sticking with stable release builds of Windows going forward.

Just did a clean install of this build (from UUP Dump) -- had some initial issues with my NAS and some games but was able to work through them and everything seems fine for now. I'll continue to use this build for a few more days and see how it goes.
