Highlights

  • This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

Improvements

This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5043178 (released September 26, 2024). Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.
  • [Remote Desktop Gateway Service] Fixed: The service stops responding. This occurs when a service uses remote procedure calls (RPC) over HTTP. Because of this, the clients that are using the service disconnect.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

For more information about security vulnerabilities, please refer to the Security Update Guide website and the October 2024 Security Updates.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB 5046306)- 26100.2032

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Known issues in this update

Applies toSymptomWorkaround
All usersWe’re aware of an issue where players on Arm devices are unable to download and play Roblox via the Microsoft Store on Windows.Players on Arm devices can play Roblox by downloading the title directly from www.Roblox.com.
Enterprise usersAfter a fresh install or an In-place upgrade to Windows 11, version 24H2, you might face issues with connecting via DirectAccess. You might observe that the DirectAccess connection is not completing and remains in a ‘connecting’ state. Additionally, you can determine if you are affected by this issue by following the below steps:
  • Open Windows PowerShell in administrator prompt. This can be accomplished by opening the Start menu and typing ‘powershell’ and selecting from the results on the right side of the start menu.
  • Type the text ‘netsh interface httpstunnel show interface’ and press enter
  • If your device is experiencing this issue, you’ll observe that the output includes the following text:
    • Last Error Code : 0x57
    • Interface Status : failed to connect to the IPHTTPS server. Waiting to reconnect
You are more likely to face this issue if your device is remotely connecting to a corporate intranet using DirectAccess. Home users of Windows using Home or Pro editions are unlikely to face this issue as DirectAccess is more commonly used in enterprise environments.

Note: Enterprise customers that require DirectAccess are recommended to evaluate Always On VPN (AOVPN) until a fix becomes available.
This issue is addressed in KB5044384.
All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected.
Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

Use the following commands to update the permissions:
    $directoryPath = "C:\ProgramData\ssh" $acl = Get-Acl -Path $directoryPath $sddlString = "O:BAD:PAI(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)(A;OICI;0x1200a9;;;AU)" $securityDescriptor = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.RawSecurityDescriptor $sddlString $acl.SetSecurityDescriptorSddlForm($securityDescriptor.GetSddlForm("All")) Set-Acl -Path $directoryPath -AclObject $acl
  3. Repeat the above steps for C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs.
Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

How to get this update

Before you install this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

Install this update

To install this update, use one of the following Windows and Microsoft release channels.

AvailableNext Step
Yes (Windows Update)None. This update will be downloaded and installed automatically from Windows Update and Microsoft Update.
Yes (MSU)Before you install this update
To get the standalone package(s) for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website. This KB contains one or more MSU files that must be installed in order.

Install this update

Method 1: Install all MSU files together

Download all MSU files for KB5044284 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) to install the target update. DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

Updating Windows PC
To apply this update to a running Windows PC, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:
DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\packages\Windows11.0-KB5044284-x64.msu

Or, run the following command from an elevated Windows PowerShell prompt:
Add-WindowsPackage -Online -PackagePath "c:\packages\Windows11.0-KB5044284-x64.msu"

Updating Windows Installation media
To apply this update to Windows Installation media, see Update Windows installation media with Dynamic Update.

To add this update to a mounted image, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:
DISM /Image:mountdir /Add-Package /PackagePath:Windows11.0-KB5044284-x64.msu

Or, run the following command from an elevated Windows PowerShell prompt:
Add-WindowsPackage -Path "c:\offline" -PackagePath "Windows11.0-KB5044284-x64.msu" -PreventPending

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

File information

For a list of the files that are provided in this update, download the file information for cumulative update 5044284.

For a list of the files that are provided in the servicing stack update, download the file information for the SSU (KB 5046306) - version 26100.2032.

One can hope. But MS has little love for us peasants.
If your last name isn't "Incorporated" MS just doesn't care. :D
"Incorporated" is my middle name though.

So I decided to move to .2033 in anticipation of KB5044384 soon.

Hooray - I am now part of the reported 8.63 GB club now I am on .2033 build!

Did some testing any my storage is same size give or take a few 10s of MB as .1752.

I created a Macrium Reflect image before and after upgrade to .2003, no sign of 8.63 GB files.

I am pretty certain this is just a mis-reporting bug now as there is no way I have 8.63 GB of update files anywhere.

I shall ask my dear friend Kara El to check the Phantom Zone in case they are hidden there.

It's my understanding that those 8.3GB of disk space "missing" is not in some invisible file but space with addresses reserved for upgrade. One of stipulations for enabling upgrade was to have at lest 9GB of free space which was supposed to be released but was not. When doing cleanup, it was about that much discrepancy between windows.old before cleaning and after. I guess only mapping the disk could show it.

You always had the option to turn off the reserved space by making a registry edit change.

This was only needed on devices with low storage drives where drive was near capacity.

You could see this in the reserved storage settings. Mine with it off is only 14 GB but if I turn it on the reserved space jumps significantly.

The only difference really if you turned it on, space was reserved permanently AND this amount was taken off your spare disk capacity.

Of course, as you say, if you had the option off, Windows "temporarily" reserved space but released it when finished.

MS has tried to bluff the media that this space needs to be reserved because of the way the incremental updates work, but that smells like cow dung to me, because if they needed it permanently reserved, they would have just removed the option to allow one to remove it.

Maybe they tried to slip this change in thinking users would not see it but leaving a (phantom) updates removal requirement of 8.63 GB in disk clean up is a pretty incompetent move.

The key points we need to know are

1) have "stolen" 8.63 GB of our drive capacity.

2) Do we need to backup whatever is written in that 8.63 GB capacity - what would happen if those files were deleted?

My money is on this just being a silly reporting bug.

I have a 320GB Windows partition. Before the bug my free space was ~240GB. This includes an 8GB page file.

Since the bug my free space is still ~240GB.

This 8.63GB is taking up ZERO space on my SSD.
My Macrium backup size hasn't increased either.

I saw the same thing on my comp as well.
That 8.63GB seems to be an error in "reporting", and not in actuality. :-)

As for the SFC issue, it seems to have already been fixed in the Release Preview channel.
So it shouldn't be long until everyone sees that. I'm guessing November patch Tuesday? :-)

This 8.63GB is taking up ZERO space on my SSD.
My Macrium backup size hasn't increased either.

Same here. I have a second desktop which had 2033 and 2152 applied but I hadn't got round to doing a cleanup. When I did, it said there was 23 GB of space to be released. As my C drive had only 36 Gb allocated (all other data is on the D drive) that seemed far-fetched. After cleanup, the allocated space reduced to 34 Gb but with there still being the usual 8.63 GB left to do.

Yes I used it for calibrating my connected HDR Samsung TV (Odyssey G70NC). Windows found no HDR certification, but the HDR is supported, and calibrating with a max of 600 nits, which was read and respected by the Windows HDR calibrating app. By the way, I disabled the VRR (Variable Refresh rate) in my TV, because I use my computer also for emulation of old computers, and the VRR-function causes lagging :)

It will never find certification, unless the monitor manufacturer has an .inf for the monitor and you install it!

Does anybody know haw to force upgrade to 24H2 thru WU ?
I do not think that is possible as it has not yet been released via WU yet - also it is a full OS replacement, not just just an enablement upgrade.

I always find the iso upgrade to be the most reliable method but there is a slight risk that your device may have incompatibilities that WU might detect and defer the upgrade. Of course, if you make an image backup, you mitigate this risk.

I already did that but had to restore to 23H2 because of those errors.

Is there any way to check for these incompatibilities in advance?

Asking because I have the ISO and have been holding off using it.

Its quite funny if you read the media reports on the 8.63GB bug a
s it is obvious they are all copying each other often using exactly the same words, and guess what, they are all decidely inaccurate.

One of the sites even quoted posts from this site (the only sensible quotes).

It proves what I have known that most technical journalists these days are just wannabes and none of them have any real technical skills.

Everything is about clickbait - never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
