IMPORTANT Because of minimal operations during the Western holidays and the upcoming new year, there won’t be a non-security preview release for the month of December 2024. There will be a monthly security release for December 2024. Normal monthly servicing for both security and non-security preview releases will resume in January 2025.

Highlights​

  • This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

Improvements​

This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5044384 (released October 24, 2024). Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.
  • [Task Manager (known issue)] Fixed: The count for the number of groups is wrong or always zero (0) on the Processes tab. This occurs when you turn on “Group by type.”
  • [Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)] Fixed: You cannot access your Dev Drive.
  • [Internet connection] Fixed: A small number of devices cannot connect to the internet. This occurs when a DHCP server response has duplicate DHCP options. This stops IPv4 connections on certain networks.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5047621)- 26100.2303​

Install this update

Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5046617 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) to install the target update. DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

Updating Windows PC
To apply this update to a running Windows PC, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:

DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\packages\Windows11.0-KB5046617-x64.msu

Method 2: Install each MSU file individually, in order
Download and install each MSU file individually either using DISM or Windows Update Standalone Installer in the following order:

  2. windows11.0-kb5046617-x64_1e5d7b716c0747592ae80c218f1d81bbb7b0c7ab.msu

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

On another thread, there has been a long discussion about the reclaimable packages but looking in depth the packages seem to be only a few kilobytes each.

After a lot of effort, we managed to delete one of them but it popped backup at next updated.

We concluded it is pointless trying to tidy up something that is so small and has no impact.

In the end, this is an academic issue rather than a real issue.

I am sure if you looked at every file in windows (millions of them), you would find hundreds that are redundant and could be removed.

I leave it up the OCD persons to chase after these. I have better things in life to worry about like is there such a thing as a DOG.

My whole view on Windows is the less tinkering with it the better -- unlike most Linux systems where the OS (kernel / task dispatcher core) which is relatively small and there's plenty of source code available - Windows is written in a hugely monolithic way that even 10 years 100% of the spaghetti production in Italy would be easier to untangle.

If the system basically works decently who really bothers if there's extra services loaded at boot or extra system files.

the old engineering adage of "If it ain't broke -- don't fix it" still applies.

The thing is; people want what people want.
If we applied that rule to a lot of things in life, we'd never advance.
However sometimes I wish Microsoft would adhere to the rule.

2024—KB5046617 (OS Build 26100.2314) installed fast on my Acer Swift X (3rd system), DISM Online and SFC
completed successfully. My Touchpad is working again (highlight, drag & drop failures) and the SFC /scannow error that I got when 24H2 was installed is fixed now with this update. :-)

Not necessarily true -- advances are usually made by new ideas which build on old stuff -- but not by tinkering with the old things -- repairing broken things is fine of course.

I can build a perfectly functional website but dissect the script and realise I can have it load faster if I was to remove some code. Se advance through mistakes, curiosity, cost effectiveness…
So many scenarios, but sure.

I noticed that my daily Macrium incremental didn't run this morning.

When I opened Macrium i got the error about the licence not being linked to the computer, I had to re-activate.

The ONLY thing changed since yesterday was the Windows update being installed 🤔

I have, in the course of testing for something else, had reason to use Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth in 24H2.

Yes, it does seem to stop at 62.3%, but it is not stuck. If you open Task Manager at the Processes tab you'll see a lot of CPU and Disk activity.

Have patience. Leave it long enough and it will get past this and continue to 100%.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

To me... that means it's still broken.

This update went fine on System 1, which I just clean installed a couple days ago; also went well on my non-compatible. System 3, practically a twin to System 1 did something odd in having WU stop at 27% for a long time but yet calling for a Restart. So I clicked on Restart and after rebooting it continued installing and all was well and is well with it. Never seen WU seemingly still Installing but saying a reboot was needed so just a little odd for me. After my troubles with System 1 of late I do not have much confidence in WU.
