Solved KB5062553 & KB5062660 Fail To Install

I have two updates that have been offered and repeatedly error out. They appear to be part of the security certificate updates, but I don't see how the end user is supposed to fix it.

Both systems I've tried them on are Windows Pro 24H2 with all previous updates applied. They keep offering the updates, but they keep failing.

I even tried downloading the updates from the Update Catalog and running them individually, that also failed.

I did run Mosby to install the 2023 keys prior to all these updates. However, the EFI DBX Certificates are not there, not sure how you create those of they're needed.

I furtherance of my confusion, this is on another machine, also Win11 Pro 24H2. I'm prompted for a password when I run the check script, that's never happened before! I have no idea what password they're looking for? :think:

Should I just wait out Microsoft and see where this goes?

This looks like a giant cluster **** by Microsoft with these certificates! I would hope there's some clear guidance coming for dealing with some of this.

These updates don't have anything to do with the firmware cert thing. They just started mentioning the certs at the top of the KB articles in July across all supported builds; that's all.

I wondered about that after I read the descriptions of the update. I'll try the reset and see if that gets it's mind right.

That's my fallback position, I did that on my laptop for another issue, worked out fine. This is a brand new MINI PC box, it shouldn't be screwing up the first day! :mad:

Several of us had trouble getting the recent 26100 builds to install. After multiple attempts I just did a repair install from the recovery section in settings and it took me to the latest build while keeping all my current Windows settings.

I'm doing that now. I figure before I invest any more time customizing this and installing more stuff, I'd like it to be running properly.

I can also tell you, just anecdotally because I've put basically no effort into this, that we normally see between 15 and 20 machines a month that need a DISM or SFC or both. July is basically over, and we've had well over 100 machines report in as needing one or the other. Something unhealthy seems to be going on.

I did runs SFC and it was clean. However, I started DISM for a restore health and it hung. That's when I decided to do the repair install and see if that gets it's mind right.

Don't forget DISM will hang at 62.3 percent if there are errors while it makes repairs. That's normal behavior though.

It didn't even get out of the gate, it never got to the point of showing the completion percentage.

Well, I ran the rebuild, it did break one thing. Secure Boot stopped working! I turned off Secure Boot in the BIOS and got it booted up. The question now, is exactly how to fix it.

After seeing this and rebooting and getting it again, I ran MOSBY and replaced the CA Certificates, but that didn't fix it. The site that the BIOS spit out for more information was a bust, it took me to a generic MSC page that has nothing to do with Secure Boot, or booting of any kind.

I have the certificates enabled, but when I enable Secure Boot, no go.

I'm assuming there's something about the repair image that needs updating, but I don't see exactly how I do that. I'm wondering if Microsoft is going to wave it's magic want and fix this for me someday. :LOL: :LOL:

In my case, the only way to fix these failed updates is to do a reinstall without affecting installed apps and personal files:
  1. Open Settings: Go to Start > Settings > System > Recovery
  2. Start Reset: Under "Recovery options," find "Reset this PC" and click Get started.
  3. Choose Keep Files: Select the Keep my files option.
  4. Select Reinstall Type: Choose Local reinstall (faster) or Cloud download (newer, potentially cleaner).
  5. Follow Prompts: Follow the on-screen instructions, confirm your choices (like turning off preinstalled apps if prompted) and start the rese

I finally did the repair install and that got it's mind right. Not sure what sent it off into the ether in the first place, but it's all working now. No errors with DISM or SFC checks, and Secure Boot is working properly.
