Solved (KB5065797) (26220.6772) Bites Back Hard!

I installed (KB5065797) (26220.6772) and the wheels fell off! Suddenly many applications no longer run, they just show up in task manager with minimal memory and no activity. Sadly, both my primary browser and my email client are two of the victims, Firefox and Thunderbird! Also among the dead are things like Adobe Reader, but Foxit reader still works. Chrome browser doesn't work, but of course Microsoft EDGE works just dandy! A bunch of other utilities don't work either.

I can't figure out what is going on. I tried to uninstall the update, but Windows just laughed at me and tossed an error. I then did a repair install of build 26220.6772, that all went fine, but the problem remains. DISM and SFC are happy with the running image, no errors. From all appearances, everything is Jake, but lots of stuff doesn't work!

Any words of wisdom before I put the USB drive in and install from scratch?

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
Have you tried running the installers of Firefox and Thunderbird.
If nothing else backup your profiles in username/appdata/roaming.
Uninstall/reinstall both Firefox and Thunderbird.
Before reinstall place the profiles back in username/appdata/roaming and Firefox/Thunderbird will use those profiles when installing.

I'm in the same boat. Chrome won't run. No office 365 apps run. I've reinstalled office 365, chrome, etc.
On my laptop I have Windows 11 insider, and it often wakes up and does a restart in the middle of the night. Pain but usually just temporary. Today, either Chrome won't start at all, or if it does, even though all the tabs are there, none of the pages actually load. I've tried all sorts of things to no avail. On this machine, with the insider builds, there seems to be no rollback option. I did run the rebuild option in Windows but that did not solve it. I've run sfc and dism. I've run a full Malwarebytes scan. I also updated Chrome to no effect. I've disabled extensions (in the target for the launch shortcut) and that seems to let it launch, but it isn't accessing anything. Edge runs fine; it's not the internet etc. Something specific to Chrome. Any suggestions are welcome.

I'm too old to deal with hassles of insider builds myself. Restore an image and turn off updates until MS fixes it.

Your story sounds exactly like mine, I can't imagine what caused it. I did consider restoring my image from a week ago, but the eager beaver Windows Update will likely just stick me with the update again.

I tried reinstalling both Firefox and Thunderbird, that didn't change anything.

I did do the full re-install. I didn't have to move the profiles since I've already moved them to my data drive. I've installed TB a few times over the years, and I don't have to change anything for it to find my email files.

Well, I don't think that's related, because I run the general availability version of Windows 11 24H2, but recently I had a similar issue. No need to repeat it here, see this post. Thankfully I had System Restore enabled, so I tried it. Of course since the whole computer was badly crawling and unresponsive I couldn't open start menu to select System Restore or Settings to find it, so I pressed WIN+R to open a Run box and typed rstrui to load it. There was one restore point from a couple of days ago, so I tried to restore to that. All the process was extremely slow like running on a 286 or worse! It was already past my bed time, so I let it struggle overnight. Thanks God it worked and now my computer is back and running! I didn't have to format and start from scratch! Phew! So I suggest you try System Restore. If it is enabled and there is any restore point to go back to, DO IT!

Sadly, after the repair install, that option is apparently gone. Apparently those restore points are now gone.

Yes, this happens if you upgrade to a new version or do an in-place upgrade/repair. Old restore points are deleted as using them would require to undo the upgrade and this is far more complicated to do without screwing the whole system. Isn't there the option to return to previous version of Windows?

It was the setting in MalwareBytes, I plan on sending them a nastygram when I get a chance! I turned that off and suddenly Firefox, Thunderbird, and Chrome all sprang to life!

Don't think so, it was a Malwarebytes setting that was blocking Firefox and Thunderbird. Also Chrome, Adobe Reader, and most likely more stuff that I didn't find.

Well, the problem was that I didn't know it was a buggy update until it was applied. It had failed a couple of times, and I just figured I'd let it sit there until I saw a future update. However, it automagically applied itself and then I couldn't get it to roll back! I think the deck was stacked against me.
