Windows Secure Boot certificate expiration
Important: Secure Boot certificates used by most Windows devices are set to expire starting in June 2026. Microsoft has been updating these certificates on consumer and non-managed business devices over the past several months. Devices that haven’t received the newer certificates will continue to start and operate normally, and standard Windows updates will continue to install. Updated certificates will continue to be delivered through Windows Update in the coming months.

End of updates​

Windows 11, version 24H2 Home and Pro editions will reach end of updates on October 13, 2026. Devices running these editions will no longer receive fixes for known issues, time zone updates, technical support, or monthly security and preview updates containing protections from the latest security threats. Enterprise and Education editions remain supported until October 12, 2027.

To stay protected and up to date, we recommend you upgrade to the latest version of Windows 11.

  • [Secure Boot] With this update, Windows quality updates include additional high confidence device targeting data, increasing coverage of devices eligible to automatically receive new Secure Boot certificates. Devices receive the new certificates only after demonstrating sufficient successful update signals, maintaining a controlled and phased rollout.
  • [Virtualization] Fixed: This update addresses an issue that could result in Stop errors HYPERVISOR_ERROR (0x20001) and KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (0x1E) after installing KB5089573 on some devices during system restarts, virtual machine operations, or while running some gaming applications
  • [Folder customization] This update introduces a security hardening change to how Windows processes desktop.ini files. Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5094135)- 26100.8648​

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates. Known issues in this update​

Symptoms

Microsoft has received reports of an issue in which certain third-party applications might be unable to launch Microsoft Office applications or open documents after installing the Windows updates released on or after June 9, 2026. This issue affects certain third-party applications that use OLE automation to interact with Microsoft Office applications. In some cases, the Office application or document might fail to open without displaying an error message.

Affected Microsoft Office applications might include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and other Microsoft Office applications when launched from within the affected third-party application.

Reports indicate that this issue may affect applications such as CCH Engagement, Workpaper Manager, dental software (such as Dentrix and Softdent), and Zotero; other similar applications might also be impacted.

Workaround

This issue is resolved in Windows updates released on and after July 14, 2026 such as KB5101650. We recommend you install the latest Windows update for your device as it contains important improvements and issue resolutions, including this one.

Symptoms

After you install Windows updates released on June 9, 2026, the confirmation dialog might display the internal Recycle Bin file name (for example, $Rxxxxx.ext) instead of the original file name when you permanently delete a single item. In Recycle Bin, the item still appears with its original name.

This issue affects only the confirmation dialog. In the Recycle Bin, the item still appears with its original file name. If you restore the item, Windows restores it using the original file name.

Workaround

This issue is addressed in KB5095093.

How to get this update​

Before you install this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates.

Deployment​

If you deploy dynamic updates such as this update to an existing Windows image, ensure the boot.stl file is included as part of the installation media. Failure to include the file might prevent devices from successfully starting from the installation media and can result in error code 0xc0430001.

Note: The boot.stl file is used during Secure Boot validation and must match the Windows version and architecture of the image you are updating.

To ensure the boot.stl file is included as part of the installation media, do one of the following:
  • Use the Update WinPE script to update an existing Windows image. (Recommended)
  • Manually copy the boot.stl file from the device Windows\Boot\EFI folder to the corresponding folder on your installation media before deploying the update.

  • In Settings > System > Storage, you now see a User Account Control (UAC) prompt only when you choose to view temporary files, instead of immediately when opening the page.

I have solved that strange behavior of DISM /RestoreHealth issue; It was taking a very long time to finish. (And maybe was also causing instability issues) I thought a new installation would be wise. Have been a long time since I have done this and the drawback of In-Place-Installments; It always leaves something behind. (Registry settings, Old rubbish on your drive that is not been cleaned by de-installing stuff etc.)

Found out that MS has changed something. Using the Media Creation Tool; it downloads the latest build now. (Windows.iso) The official Windows 11 ISO; Win11_25H2_<Language>_x64_v2.iso has still build 26200.8037 (Dated: 07-03-2026) The version I have downloaded by using the MCT is now 26200.8653 and is dates from 06-06-2026. As the latest update was 8655 and this one is 8653 will it still update to 8655??? No! Apparently there is no upgrade path from 8653 to 8655. Just have to wait on the next big update....

Installed this build with option; Install new. Installed it. After everything was installed SFC found no errors and DISM /RestoreHealth went back to it normal and quick check what was normal before 8655. Windows update installed some drivers and Defender definitions but did not advance to build 8655. Could repeat that DISM /RestoreHealth command again and again. Just as fast as it was the first time. No more long delays between 63% and 67%.

The only drawback I found was installing (have a Dutch version) an additional English (United States) language pack broke off with an errorcode; 0x800F09050. For some reason Windows thinks this is fixed to Dutch and does not allow to install the complete language pack. Out of the 5 options some broke off with an error; Simple typing, Handwriting, Text-to-Speech and Simple speech recognition. Did not had this issue with the full .ISO (v2). Alternative ways with DISM, Powershell also refused and gave the same errorcode. I only want to have a spellchecker. Using now the one of Brave. (Brave and Chrome are both Chromium based) So there are other means around it. Will watch if my stability is also back again. Can not explain that behavior.....

I guess I'm missing it. Where does MS say in this KB, or in particular the KB for the Preview of this build (the one that normally has all the details), that it's in any kind of rollout? The Preview one has decent release notes (one for current features and another for gradual ones), and there's no mention in either of this feature that I can see.

It would help if you ask specifically what you're looking for.
If it's the "fixes latency issues" thing... it's probably marketing, and probably on a gradual rollout.

Just about every software dev, (not just Microsoft), claims to be able to fix latency.
In the past 26 years I've seen very few improvements in that area.
Latency issues are more easily cured with hardware, not software.

And even hardware latency claims are exaggerated.
A new graphics card comes out claiming much reduced latency.
How ever much reduction they claim, in real life it will be far less.

The same goes for frame rate increases, by the way. :-)

The best way to reduce latency is to disable unnecessary background processes, and de-bloat Windows.

@Ghot Oh, I see, what I quoted didn't quite mention the words. Yes, he was talking about the low latency feature a few posts back. I agree that it may or may not be a noticeable thing (some say yes, some say no), but I was just wondering why everyone seems to think that it definitely is rolling out in this build. It's bad enough that MS provided no way (not counting something in the Registry) to see if it's enabled, but that problem is compounded if they didn't even say the build is eligible for it.

In regards to the Low Latency feature from what I've read MS is being pretty selective in what machines get the full feature enabled version at this time and which ones have to wait. Case in point I enabled it on all three of my machines with Vivetool, these are the full feature codes vivetool /enable /id:58989092,60716524,48433719,61391826. However only my older machine will leave all four codes enabled after the reboot meaning it's the only one with the full feature enabled. On the two newer machines MS force disables one of the codes meaning they only get a partial low latency feature. As you already heard you probably won't see a noticeable difference unless you have older hardware though.

I think everyone there is in a siloed snit. MS started a significant refurbishment/expansion of their campus in the years leading up to Covid. Now employees are insulted if they're asked to even work on a campus.

You're not going to see it when running applications. It's mainly for things like opening core windows functions (start menu, search, action center, etc as noted below).

Also, this is the patch note from the May 26th KB that first introduced the feature for general release. If you go to the patch notes on MS website, you can see it's under the Gradual Rollout tab:
