Windows Secure Boot certificate expiration
Important: Secure Boot certificates used by most Windows devices expire starting in June 2026. Microsoft has been updating these certificates on consumer and non-managed business devices over the past several months. Devices that haven’t received the newer certificates will continue to start and operate normally, and standard Windows updates will continue to install. Updated certificates will continue to be delivered through Windows Update in the coming months. For more information, see Windows Secure Boot certificate expiration and CA updates.

End of updates
Windows 11, version 24H2 Home and Pro editions will reach end of updates on October 13, 2026. Devices running these editions will no longer receive fixes for known issues, time zone updates, technical support, or monthly security and preview updates containing protections from the latest security threats. Enterprise and Education editions remain supported until October 12, 2027.

To stay protected and up to date, we recommend you upgrade to the latest version of Windows 11.

Secure Boot​

  • This update includes additional high confidence device targeting data, increasing coverage of devices eligible to automatically receive new Secure Boot certificates. Certificate deployment via Windows updates continues across supported PCs and non-managed business devices in the coming months.

App​

  • This update improves the stability of Office applications used in virtualized environments. Users should experience a more reliable experience when working with and closing Office apps.

File Explorer​

  • This update addresses an issue where files stored on a DFS mapped drive could be incorrectly treated as originating from the Internet after the device started while disconnected from the network and later reconnected. This could cause File Explorer’s Preview Pane to display the message, “The file you are attempting to preview could harm your computer,” or cause files copied from the DFS drive to receive an unexpected Mark of the Web.

Mobile device management (MDM)​

  • This update addresses an issue affecting newly provisioned or newly recovered Windows devices running versions of Windows released on or after July 14, 2026 (KB5101650). After enrollment in a mobile device management (MDM) service such as Microsoft Intune, affected devices could remain in an incorrect noncompliant state and be unable to access corporate resources.

Storage​

  • This update fixes an issue that affects File History automatic backups to network shares using Server Message Block (SMB). Backups did not work because Windows showed a false “invalid credentials” error when connecting to SMB shares.
If you installed earlier updates, your device downloads and installs only the new updates contained in this package.

How to get this update​

Before you install this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates.

Deployment​

If you deploy dynamic updates such as this update to an existing Windows image, ensure the boot.stl file is included as part of the installation media. Failure to include the file might prevent devices from successfully starting from the installation media and can result in error code 0xc0430001.

Note
The boot.stl file is used during Secure Boot validation and must match the Windows version and architecture of the image you are updating.

To ensure the boot.stl file is included as part of the installation media, do one of the following:
  • Use the Update WinPE script to update an existing Windows image. (Recommended)
  • Manually copy the boot.stl file from the device Windows\Boot\EFI folder to the corresponding folder on your installation media before deploying the update.

My PC all updated to 8973 without any issues, though it sat on 7 percent for around 35 seconds and it took no less than 4 restarts, but it all went ok and everything still works. Carried out a Temporary Files cleanup straight after. Checked O&O ShutUp!, no changes. All seems good.

WinRE not updated here if this is the right place to look at. That may be due to the fact that I downloaded standalone .msu installer and updated with it. It was .8875 before and .8875 after.

After installing build 26200.8973, my File Explorer started behaving strangely. Previously, it always opened to "This PC", but now it opens to Quick Access (I think).

I have already disabled Quick Access in the Windows Registry. I also went into Folder Options and set File Explorer to open to "This PC", but it still doesn't.

Is this a bug, or is it an new feature?

It's not fixed after an update. Still error 87 in Event Viewer.

Another update another problem....

All DISM admin options show blinking cursor and no output , while SFC shows no errors, Windows Update screen shows completely blank until 4 reboots , which includes "phantom" further update messages .

Previous update it was network adaptor corrupted and so reducing internal network output speed to 25%, while incoming speed was normal !

Ok Microsoft have a lot of different owner configs to appease , but they promised to "improve"
So what next ?

Guys! For all of you wondering what's going on with dism restore health: there is a problem regarding dism start component clean up. I had clean results regarding sfc and dism commands but after running start component clean up (not with reset base, this is only to be used for very rare situations), I restarted my dell laptop and guess what? Dism found component store repairable! So i ran dism restore health and finished normally! But after restarting laptop, sfc found and repaired corrupted files.. I will be back to home in 2 hours to rerun restore health and after this the sfc scannow...Of course there are now only 2 reclaimable packages...But...the whole problem is triggered (for the restore health to fail) by the initial 3 packages and from the use of the dism start component clean up...So the fix here is to use the start component clean up and after this to rerun the dism restore health...
Yes I know... it's weird...but as you can see it's a classic Microsoft bug...

Updated. 3 full reboots as normal these days.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth completed without reporting any problems, but I did notice that the laptop got very hot (painful to touch) between 63% and 69%, which took several minutes. SFC /Scannow also completed without problems.

I have already disabled Quick Access in the Windows Registry. I also went into Folder Options and set File Explorer to open to "This PC", but it still doesn't.

Since you are not using BT, have you tried disabling bluetooth in BIOS and using Driver Store Explorer or pnputil.exe to remove the drivers? First export the driver(s) using Driver Store Explorer so that you have backup copies.

That is why I went back to 26200.8973. The Problem with my Email went away-it was still my ISP's fault.

Good to know, I have the movable Taskbar on my beta machines but didn't know the coding was in this build now. If the settings are a gradual rollout I should be able to set them with vivetool now then so will check this out later.

Well the taskbar reposition won't work in this build yet but the start menu resize coding is there and works.
