Win Update KB5124008 Windows 11 Cumulative Update build 26100.9445 (24H2) and 26200.9445 (25H2) - Sept. 8

 Microsoft Support:

Announcements and messages

This section provides key notifications related to this release, including announcements, change logs, and end-of-support notices.

Windows Secure Boot certificate expiration

Important

Secure Boot certificates used by most Windows devices started to expire on June 2026. Microsoft has been updating these certificates on PCs and non-managed business devices for the past months. Devices that haven't received the newer certificates will continue to start, and standard Windows updates will continue to install. We will continue to install the newer certificates via Windows updates in the coming months.

End of updates

Windows 11, version 24H2 Home and Pro editions will reach end of updates on October 13, 2026. Devices running these editions will no longer receive fixes for known issues, time zone updates, technical support, or monthly security and preview updates containing protections from the latest security threats. Enterprise and Education editions remain supported until October 12, 2027.

To stay protected and up to date, we recommend you upgrade to the latest version of Windows 11.

Improvements

This update includes improvements from the following previously released updates:
The following summary outlines key quality improvements addressed by this update. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change.
  • [Security updates] This update provides security improvements. For more information about the security vulnerabilities resolved by this update, see the Security Update Guide)
  • [Secure Boot] This update includes additional high confidence device targeting data, increasing coverage of devices eligible to automatically receive new Secure Boot certificates. Certificate deployment via Windows updates continues across supported PCs and non-managed business devices in the coming months.
  • [Mouse] Fixed: This update addresses an issue that prevented customized mouse cursor settings, including pointer style and color, from displaying correctly. Selected cursor options and colors now work as expected.
  • [Personalization] Fixed: This update addresses an issue where desktop background and other personalization settings might not load correctly, causing the desktop background to appear black.
  • [Teams and Outlook on Arm64 PCs] Fixed: This update addresses an issue that could cause Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Outlook to unexpectedly close on Arm64-based PCs.
  • [Date and Time] This update adjusts Morocco Standard Time to reflect Morocco's transition to permanent UTC+00:00 effective September 20, 2026. This change ensures that the correct local time is displayed after the transition.
  • [Remote Desktop Audio Redirection] This update addresses an issue affecting Remote Desktop audio redirection that could prevent audio from a remote session from playing on the local device in certain configurations.
  • [OMA-DM Client Logging] This update improves diagnostic logging for the OMA-DM client, providing additional information to help troubleshoot device management server connection issues.
If you've already installed previous updates, your device will download and install only the new updates included in this package.

Deployment

If you deploy dynamic updates such as this update to an existing Windows image, ensure the boot.stl file is included as part of the installation media. Failure to include the file might prevent devices from successfully starting from the installation media and can result in error code 0xc0430001.

Note: The boot.stl file is used during Secure Boot validation and must match the Windows version and architecture of the image you are updating.
To ensure the boot.stl file is included as part of the installation media, do one of the following:
  • Use the Update WinPE script to update an existing Windows image. (Recommended)
  • Manually copy the boot.stl file from the device Windows\Boot\EFI folder to the corresponding folder on your installation media before deploying the update.
For information about how to apply Dynamic Update packages to existing Windows images, see Update Windows installation media with Dynamic Update.

After completing the 9445 update, I installed the 26H2 enablement package. The build was bumped from 200 to 300.
I did the same and I am on 26300.9445 26H2. Since I got only the taskbar new options I forced enabled the other ones for start and search with vivetool. The new smaller start menu is better for me. DISM and SFC went fine and no issues so far.

I noticed that in Windows Features, I have SMB turned OFF.

Well, it wasn't that.

I also have all Shares, Sharing of any type turned OFF.
I'm thinking File History may have something to do with Sharing...

I re-enabled Administrative Shares, with SMB turned OFF again.
That didn't work.

But when I click "Turn on" in File History, I get a spinning circle, but it still won't come ON.
Maybe it wants SMB and Admin shares on?

I'll try later.. I have a few errands to run.

Well, with Admin Shares and SMB enabled... it still won't turn ON

Here's what Google AI says is required...

.
You need a connected external storage drive or a configured network location to use File History in Windows. [1]

Storage Requirements
    • External Drive: A separate USB flash drive or external hard drive plugged into your computer. [1, 2]
    • Network Location: A shared folder on a network or home server that is accessible and configured. [1, 2]
    • Drive Format: The target drive must use an NTFS file system and cannot be the same physical drive where your Windows operating system or source libraries are installed. [1]
    • Capacity Considerations: Opinions on Microsoft Q&A are mixed regarding disk size, but users often note that having a backup drive larger than or equal to your source data helps prevent "disk full" errors during initial snapshots. [1]

System Requirements
    • Supported OS: A compatible Windows version (such as Windows 10 or Windows 11).
    • User Folders: File History targets default user libraries like Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, and Desktop. [1, 2, 3, 4]
For official steps to configure your storage, see Microsoft Support or read the NinjaOne Blog Guide. [1, 2]

I attached a 256GB USB stick but I had already disabled Admin Shares and SMB.
It still didn't turn ON, but it did create a File History folder on the USB stick.

So... I quit. I don't want File History anyway. :-)

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
I'm no expert on anything but I've been wondering. I've seen a couple posts else-ware that's its a timing issue. I been thinking , do those that have this issue have fast-boot enabled ? I don't, and never seen this problem.
Nope fast boot is off on all of my PCs...
BTW I get this warning on PCs with 23H2 and 25H2 so it must have come in an update to the virus updates....

Are you sure [File History] is working properly?

You can press the [Run now] button. If a dialog box appears stating that an external HDD is required, it means the operation cannot proceed normally.

If File History is working correctly, you will see the message "File last copied on 9/11/2026 6:12 AM". Open File Properties > Previous Versions, and check the point in time to which the archive can be restored.

I attached a 256GB USB stick but I had already disabled Admin Shares and SMB.
It still didn't turn ON, but it did create a File History folder on the USB stick.

So... I quit. I don't want File History anyway. :-)
turn it on by add this binary and value entry "File History Does not Turn On -Problem and Hard Fought Solution - Microsoft Q&A"

As per the instructions at your link... in an Elevated Command Prompt I ran this...
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Notifications\Data" /v 41960B29A3BC1475 /t REG_BINARY /d 0100000001000000 /f

Note: You can't copy/paste the line directly from the instructions, linked in post #212
It's on TWO lines. I had to turn it into one line, as posted here.

Yep. That worked.
Then I tried to turn it OFF, and it wouldn't turn OFF.
Probably because I tried to turn it OFF immediately.

So... I just restored from a Sept. 8th backup, made after the Windows Update. :-)

Make the taskbar smaller

Resize the Start menu
Both work on my System#1, maybe the small taskbar will work now when unhiding with a full (browser) screen...

Still dont know why (??) you should dismrepair if the dismhealth check is fine............. 🛠️
2 reasons:

- That (now) constant CSI FileFlags corruption is not reported by ScanHealth. It is found and repaired when you run RestoreHealth after each update.

- RestoreHealth does a check and repair when ScanHealth says there is something wrong. Before 8655 this function did just that. Repaired issues. Now it just always downloads 2x 270Mb no matter if your system is healthy or not. It is just like SFC. You run it, and if there is something wrong it repairs things at the same time. Restorehealth did have the same function. In the past I rather use RestoreHealth instead of ScanHealth. It ran for the same amount of time when nothing is wrong. Only in cases it found something wrong it took longer because it was repairing stuff. In some ways this method was quicker. Just ran RestoreHealth instead of ScanHealth and RestoreHealth if there was something wrong. (It is checking twice)

Before 8655 RestoreHealth also downloaded stuff if it could not find things. But if it could find it just repaired things.
ScanHealth only checks. RestoreHealth checks and repairs like SFC does.

It had functioned as it did. Now it has through a bug it always downloads 2x 270Mb making the command increase in time from 4 minutes to 14 Minutes.

If you think what's all the fuzz about; OK. But if you run now RestoreHealth on your system; you will find in the CBS.log that a number of corrupted CSI FileFlags are being repaired despite ScanHealth said there is nothing wrong. Basically from the start both commands ScanHealth and RestoreHealth share the same check procedure at the start, but RestoreHealth looks a bit deeper into things and repairs them.

I want to make sure there are no failures in my system that may hamper future updates. I run RestoreHealth now always once after each update. If I want to make a quick check afterwards I use ScanHealth. I came across issues whereby CheckHealth said everything is OK while ScanHealth reported issues. (So run RestoreHealth) So I don't trust CheckHealth for one bit!

If you can't be bothered with these stuff that is your good right to do so..... I just look a bit deeper.

Note:

In Windows, CSI FileFlags refer to metadata attributes tracked by the Component Servicing Infrastructure (CSI) to manage, validate, and preserve the integrity of system files within the Windows Component Store (%windir%\WinSxS).

What They Do

The Component Servicing Infrastructure (CSI) is the underlying engine that handles low-level file and registry deployments for Windows Updates and system roles. The FileFlags entry for any given component file dictates its operational behavior and attributes. They tell Windows:
  • File Permissions: Whether a file should inherit specific Access Control Lists (ACLs) or ownership (e.g., owned strictly by TrustedInstaller).
  • Deployment Instructions: How the file behaves during updates, such as whether it can be shared across multiple hard links, compressed, or if it must be protected against modifications.
  • Verification Metrics: Bookkeeping attributes used to confirm the file's current state matches its recorded manifest.
This means a system file's active properties or attributes did not match the Master Manifest data stored by Windows. It usually implies that the attribute bits were tripped or edited improperly.

If your log reports that CSI FileFlags are corrupted or mismatched and cannot be repaired automatically, you can force Windows to rebuild and correct the component store using these steps:
  1. Open Command Prompt as an Administrator.
  2. Run the deployment image repair tool to fetch healthy versions of the manifests and files from Windows Update:
cmd

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Thanks. Checked it yesterday (Ibra86's Pastebin - Pastebin.com) It wasn't available. Today it is.👍As so far MS is keeping it's promise. The next step; deployment of 26H2.
26H2 is still beta/release preview, once it gets a full public release the ISOs will likely be updated to that version.
