Any Tech Boffins know the answer to this one.... When I downloaded Win 11 I got a folder called Windows.old which I guess is my Windows 10 setup. I can stop it deleting after 10 days with DISM. I just wondered if a, If I rename it will it stop Win 11 deleting it and b, if I ever want to go back to my old set up can I rename it back to Windows.old and restore it using Settings>Restore the same as I could for the first 10 days as I don't want a clean install. Thanks

Oddly, my Windows bootup still gives me the option to roll back to my previous version of Windows. I have the choice to continue logging in or to roll back. Is this unusual?

Really, it doesn't matter, though, since I don't plan on returning to Windows 10 and have a image backup of it if I did want to go back. I just thought I'd check.

Mine doesn't do that, It just goes straight to Windows 11, however, I do have password less login enabled using netplwiz.

You will usually have a 10 day window to revert to your previous version of windows if you Upgrade/Update using the windows update route. This will apply to either a regular Feature update, minor update and also to an upgrade of the OS version ( in this case from 10 to 11).

Saying this this is not always the best way to trial a new OS as it will be in a prerelease state, and could also damage all your data should anything serious go wrong, which is a possibility.

I myself only run a prerelease OS via a Virtual Machine or in the case of Windows 11 a Windows to go install, ( which gives you a trial of the OS on "real hardware", that I can just run from an external SSD

I only use 11 on my spare machine . I increased the number of rollback days from 10 to 30 with DISM. so if it does go horrible on me my first machine is good on win 10

I thought that at first. However, I've had the ability (or so they say) to roll back to the previous OS since I installed Windows 11 in June. Maybe I have some setting that brings this up? Any idea?

Hi, Just realised it is not a image backup I have, it doesn't matter, I am not changing.
For future use can you tell me how to create an Image backup or suggest a web tutorial Thanks Cereberus
There are many image backup programs, free and paid. I am using Macrium Reflect v7 and find it easy to use. It can backup your system partition to the same HDD, and external HDD/SSD or an connected network device. The image copy of my C: drive (internal SSD) to an attached SSD takes about 10 minutes, and 25 minutes to my Desktop PC over wifi. The time to restore from the SSD takes less time. The time will be longer if you have data on the same partition.
It is so quick and reliable that last weekend, after an image copy, I did a clean install of the official Windows .ISO for 22000.132, explored the process and features, and then restored my image copy.

I use Aomei Backupper Pro,

Speaking to them yesterday they stated that the current versions of their software should work without issue, with Windows 11

They did add that if anyone notices any issue, however small, to let them know as they have not closed their testing yet

Thanks, I have downloaded it, looks simple enough to back up. I have one question....If I do a backup to an external drive then do a clean install, how to I restore my backup as the program would have been lost during the clean install? I hope that made sense. Many thanks... Rod

The-Hive specifically asked how to restore after doing clean install. That would have wiped the boot menu along with everything else. Having Macrium recovery on the boot menu is a good idea in most cases, just not this one.

True, but MR could be installed on the clean Win system, then create the MR Rescue environment for performing the restore. An alternative is to do a live restore from MR on the clean Win system. If all else fails get a USB stick and create the MR Rescue USB on another PC, and then boot fro m it and do the restore.

Thanks

The Windows.old can be used to reinstall windows and save files.
This is a custom install.
A custom install can be repeated as necessary creating new windows.old in the following form:
Windows.old
Windows.old.000
Windows.old.001
