Known and Resolved issues for Windows 11 version 21H2

  • Staff

Current status as of October 10, 2023

As of October 10, 2023, Home and Pro editions of Windows 11, version 21H2 have reached end of servicing. The October 2023 security update, released on October 10, 2023, is the last update available for these editions. After this date, devices running these editions will no longer receive monthly security and preview updates containing protections from the latest security threats. Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and Enterprise multi-session editions for this version will reach end of servicing on October 8, 2024 and will receive security updates until then.

To help keep you protected and productive, Windows Update will automatically initiate a feature update for Windows 11 consumer devices and non-managed business devices that are at, or within several months of reaching, end of servicing. This keeps your device supported and receiving monthly updates that are critical to security and ecosystem health. For these devices, you will be able to choose a convenient time for your device to restart and complete the update.

As always, we recommend that you update your devices to the latest version of Windows 11. For detailed information, see the Windows 11, version 21H2 end of servicing (Home & Pro) lifecycle page. For information about servicing timelines and lifecycle, see Windows 11 release information, Lifecycle FAQ - Windows, and Microsoft Lifecycle Policy search tool.

Regarding "known issues", I am amazed that I don't find a reference to incomplete/broken color management with the official Windows 11 release.
I can imagine that mostly tablet/laptop users will be interested in Windows 11, but I ran into a very inconvenient bug on a desktop PC with an Eizo CS2740 4k display, and wonder how that bug made it into the final release.
In short: Windows 11 breaks the loading of a custom calibrated display profile, and applications like Adobe Photoshop show "sRGB"as the monitor profile, leading to oversaturated colors on a wide gamut display like the Eizo CS2740.

When starting Eizo color navigator, it simply displays that it failed to load the profile. The Windows color management tab does show the custom monitor profile as the ICC profile for that device (display), but the profile is not properly loaded and that can be seen by checking the monitor profile in a color managed application like e.g. Photoshop, where it states "sRGB" as the monitor profile.

This is not an Eizo colornavigator issue, but a Windows 11 issue that I also ran into with a Windows 10 insider developer preview release in the past.
Ironically, with Windows 11, my only way out has been changing to the Windows 11 insider developer branch and install build 22471, in which this is fixed, but I am now stuck in the developer branch without any desire to install a new developer preview every week.

Without wanting to complain (I should have stuck with Windows 10 I know), it still amazes me that Microsoft has such little regards for proper color management that it will put out an official release with such a nasty bug.
B.t,w I have read one or two reports from NEC wide gamut disply users that have exactly the same problem, so this is 100% a Windows issue and not Eizo.

Me too. I have two color calibrated monitors and one is an Eizo. I am on the dev channel still because MS fixed this issue in dev a long time before the official release. Neither monitor of my monitors' calibration works in the official release. MS ignore what they wish to ignore. Nothing new there. It is a royal PITA.

I'm running the RTM version and color management is working for me.

I have a 24 inch NEC wide gamut monitor (NEC PA242W) which I just calibrated using NEC's Spectreview II software with an X-Rite i1Pro colorimeter (puck) and all is good here - the created profile sticks. And there are no noticeable differences between Windows 10 and 11 in color display.

Anyway you have a link to that NEC info you mention?

Thanks.

Thanks for confirming Windows 11 not working with Eizo displays due to incomprehensible color management short comings in the official release.
I guess all I can do is stick it out with developer preview.

I'll have to counter to say if some are working and others are not, it may not be "Windows 11" but the software of a particular manufacture. If the issue was entirely on the OS, far many more would be complaining about the issue. Thus far I've only heard of Eizo.

Anyway, one of the most common issues I've seen reported with monitors and color management with calibrating a monitor is this often missed setting....

Color Management Panel.png

That "Use my settings for this device" checkbox has caused all sorts of headaches because people simply isn't aware it's there. What that check does is force the monitor to always use the selected color profile. Here my created monitor calibration profile created by NEC's Spectreview II software is used and locked in.

The other issue is many don't install a monitor driver because many don't realize some vendors actually supply them. Here's my NEC monitor being shown with the NEC driver for it...

NEC Driver info.png

Just FYI, and a few things to check.

Good luck.

See my post linking to the microsoft forums thread started by a BenQ user. Also, this bug already appeared in the exact same form in a Windows 10 developer preview about 9 months ago. I dropped out of the developer branch for exactly that reason. It was fixed in the official release later on, and how ironic to now have to flee to the developer branch with Windows 11. This is absolutely a Windows bug.

With regards to your screen shots of the color management tab: Yes, the custom monitor profile is listed as the default (and only) profile for the device, and changing modes in the Eizo color navigator app is indeed reflected in the windows color management tab, but the Eizo application already warns when changing modes that the "ICC profile could not be loaded", and Adobe Photoshop shows "sRGB" as the profile associated with the display. Geneo's post handily explains that the profile is loaded in the OS, but not properly, i.e. "it is not possible to get the ICC profile information".

or that device (display), but the profile is not properly loaded and that can be seen by checking the monitor profile in a color managed application like e.g. Photoshop, where it states "sRGB" as the monitor profile.

Thanks for confirming Windows 11 not working with Eizo displays due to incomprehensible color management short comings in the official release.
I guess all I can do is stick it out with developer preview.

The main problem apparently is that the bug does not let the software read the icc files it has written to the Windows color management ssystem. This affects Eizo color navigator, in particular, because it lets you change between several color calibrations on-the-fly (like an sRGB calibration to a wide gamut aRGB). I The software needs to read back the icc profile to do this via windows color management. My other monitor I calibrate with X-Rite i1Profiler using the same i1-display pro puck. Both of these software are affected in another way - you can't do a calibration verification pass with the puck because both software need to be able to read back the icc-profile that they are supposed to validate.

I think there is also a secondary problem for multiple monitors in that Windows gets their color profiles mixed up.

Your info is very welcome, and also note that Adobe Photoshop cannot read the ICC profile information either, hence defaulting to "sRGB" as the display profile. It is bewildering that apparently this issue was fixed a quite a while ago in the developer preview, and still Microsoft did not bother to get the fix into the final official release. Hard to understand.

Hi folks

Defect 1 (at least on my system -- physical machine not a VM)

From the menu can't type anything in the top search bar -- just disappears -- mouse won't enter either.
This is a BIG deect IMO since I often start a program by just typing in a name e.g Outlook otherwise you have to have task bar full of icons or desktop covered with short cuts.

Version I'm on :

No slowdowns on my laptop.

Always the same problem with this kind of announcement. Some users will or will not experience the downside. I guess it all depends on PC's hardware, specs, configuration and the type of third-party apps installed. Personally, I cannot say anything yet as I only have Win 11 installed in a Hyper-V VM. I am not in a hurry to upgrade my only one machine that has passed the PC health check; I will let MS offer the upgrade to me.

I have Killer and it seems ok, maybe a couple of sites download slower but it's hard to tell it's still pretty fast so I can't be bothered to run checks as if I have an affected killer there should be a fix soon. Generally 11 is a fraction of a second slower than 10 at everything and I have a fast system. That is my only observations

Hi,
I disable virtualization always
It's just a waste if you don't use it.

Think one of ms security uses it for memory integrity in defender ?

I have deleted the VM on which Win 11 was installed (22000.194) because I won't have any kind of use for it. Even tried to switch to the Dev channel with a .ISO from UUPDump.ml, everything went OK up to the installing phase where MS throws a message saying that they cannot install and close the whole process. Worth noting that before trying I have even made some adjustments to the VM in Hyper-V with regard to the Win 11 hardware requirements (was < 4GB RAM = I put it at 5 GB), but still didn't work.

Not a big deal, since Win 11 will be coming my way pretty soon. For now, I don't have any use for the VM; maybe I will create a new one when needed for another purpose.

I'm running W11 with a Ryzen 9 3900x on a B550 MB and my desktop PC is running better than it ever did on W10.It even fixed performance issues with my Samsung 980 pro.If an update is coming that will make it even faster, then all I can say is,bring it on.
