I changed the top panel (where my touch screen is embedded) of my HP laptop yesterday. It was successfully done. But I am now facing a stranger problem after putting it all together. My laptop keyboard AND trackpad mouse are locked and unavailable for use when i boot into windows. However they do function when i am in BIOS mode but not from the login screen onward.

My laptop is a HP x360 and may be rotated to turn and behave like a tablet

I can work with a USB external mouse and keyboard

The laptop keyboard and mouse are locked even when laptop is started in safe mode

All drivers updated and all windows updates installed (with no problem)

Laptop KB and mouse working perfectly till 2 days ago

Could any contribute their opinion as to what is going on and suggest what i can try to 'unlock' the laptop KB and mouse so that they function windows?

I doubt anything untoward happened during the laptop panel replacement as the KB and trackpad are mounted in the lower panel and were not touched during this operation

Serious help needed and a big thank you for all the help i get here - almost always!

Which applies to you?

1) The keyboard and / or touchpad show up in Device Manager with an error.

2) The keyboard and / or touchpad do not show up all in Device Manager.

3) The keyboard and / or touchpad show up perfectly normally as if nothing is wrong.

If showing up with an error, you may need to simply uninstall those devices and then allow Windows to redetect them by right-clicking the computer name at the top of the device tree and choosing Scan for hardware changes.

If they are not showing up at all in Device Manager, then are you CERTAIN that you reconnected all cables? Having both the keyboard and touchpad missing makes me think that a ribbon cable got knocked loose in the process.

TIP: HP makes their service manuals available on their web site. Take a look and see what connections are needed for the KB and touchpad and verify that they are well seated.

In the third case above, I'd be a bit stumped, but I doubt that they would be showing up normally in Device Manager if neither is working.

Apparently, some of the OEM screen replacements are missing the orientation sensor.

Thanks garlin - i understood what the problem from the ifixit link you provided above.
I guess the cable to the sensor has gotten disconnected while retrofitting the screen into the new top panel

Let's see if i can fix the same now that i am aware that it is not a software problem

I had the same issue recently - either on my Spectre x360 or maybe it was on my Asus netbook, when I disassembled both machines to upgrade the HDD to an SSD. I had a heck of a time getting the KB and display to work after assembly and finally suspected the display ribbon cable not seating properly. I thought for sure I had slid the ribbon into the motherboard port as far as it would go, but after the 3rd time of trying to place the cable it finally worked. I know sometimes there is side to side slack and those very tiny wires in the cable don't line up exactly right. But thanks God my persistence paid off and got the machine back to nominative behavior!
