Today my VW Polo is at my local garage being fixed. For the past few days three warning lights have been coming on simultaneously, the ABS, ESP, and tyre pressure warnings. None of these are essentials, so I could continue driving as normal.

All 3 systems rely on the wheel rotation sensors. Apparently the rear nearside one had failed. Should be ready to pick up later this afternoon.

I used to have a PC room upstairs, still do come to that but it's frozen it time - it stooped at dial-up modems and Windows '95.
Since getting WiFi and Windows XP I've been 'laptop only'.

What about getting a cheap laptop and using RDP to connect to your upstairs rig?

Well the car is fixed now. The 1.5 mile (2.4km) walk home after dropping it off was OK, but the afternoon walk back took twice as long. A brisk walk is incompatible with full sun and 26°C. Even at a gentle stroll it was exhausting. :hot:

I now have a fully functional car, and my wallet is £190 lighter (figuratively speaking - paid by card ;)). About a third of that was cost of the parts.

Howdy all.


Spent the day fighting Netflix, Samsung and an ISP. Made a lot of progress but never resolved the actual issue. TV is nine years old and for most of the support agents that is half a life time. (Menu's they've never seen, frozen like a deer in the headlights of a car. That and the menu's lack functional that they've added to the newer versions, like wipe cache. )


Sorry to hear the heat issues. It is cooler here, actual 81F and only feels like 100F. Going to cool tonight.

Back in 2010 when this car was new I'd take it to my local VW dealer for servicing. That was a 3 mile walk home (4.8km) - and up hill too for the first part, rising some 305ft (93m). The walk back to pick it up was a lot easier - downhill for the last half(y)

In 2017 when it was well out of warranty I switched to using a local garage that I knew and trusted. Of course we didn't have heatwaves like this back then so the walk was quite pleasant (unless it rained).

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Though to be honest a non-functional ABS didn't stop it working normally, just meant I'd have remember to use cadence breaking in the unlikely event an emergency stop (must be 10+ years since my last one ;))

I'm expecting a minor heatwave next week, but it's not as bad as last time - may touch low 90's at worst.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
