On my first cup so I'm not bouncing off the walls yet. :coffee::cool:

Last night i found 3 boxes full of used mechanical hard drives, each one with a sticky note attached, explaining the condition of the drive. Jim was thorough. A few of these are 1TB spinners but most are considerably smaller, some as low as 16GB, some IDE drives. Presumably, all of them work to some extent according to the notations. I think I will sort through these later and if they're not wiped I'll wipe them and use them as give aways.

I have successfully made a small path between the piles of boxes to walk through. Progress is slow.

Have a great day all :D

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Well, I wouldn't go as far as calling my eclectic collection of laptops a 'data centre' ;)
Microsoft's updates for the Insider experimental builds run to their own schedule, so none of those get a Patch Tuesday update.

As for the rest on RTM Windows, a dozen machines updated smoothly and have been backed up without issues, eleven of them by manually checking for updates, the 24/7 file server is set up to update automatically and runs scheduled backups.

The only problem was with the three Windows 10 laptops. Microsoft routinely release their Patch Tuesday updates promptly at 10am Eastern Time (Washington DC). That's 6pm for me. Unusually yesterday's W10 updates were released nearly two hours late. As my W10 machines are some of my slower ones, that meant that I finished some 3 hours later than I had anticipated. :(
*LOL* you know over a certain number its not home use, it not hobby use... its a data-cluster. 😁 *LOL*
Nice everything went well :-) and a bit irritating the win10 push was late with so many hours. So it became a late night then. :-)

I have not installed any updates lately.. i have seen i have a few updates, but i just dont have the time for it, just in case Murphy pays me a visit just because i dont have time for troubleshooting and fixing. :-)

*LOL* you know over a certain number its not home use, it not hobby use... its a data-cluster. 😁 *LOL*
A 'cluster' implies that they are all on at the same time - mine aren't. Only the file sever stays on 24/7. Typically I'll use maybe one or two of the others at any one time. It's more like a small company's peer-to-peer network with users that pop in and out from time to time...

Nice everything went well :-) and a bit irritating the win10 push was late with so many hours. So it became a late night then. :-)

Oh look what Linux Mint have in store as a Christmas present (@labeeman may want to take note).

Our next release is scheduled for Christmas, and it will be called Linux Mint 27 “Adrien”.

I’ve really enjoyed using girls’ names since 2006. They gave each release an identity and made it feel much warmer than just a number. From “Ada” at the very start to “Zena” last year, we’ve now reached the end of the alphabet. It’s funny how this happened just as we’re moving to a new release schedule. I want to continue this tradition with the new series. This time we’re using boys’ names :-)

As you can see, the release number represents the upcoming year. We’ll no longer use point releases, so the release after that will be 28. You’ll upgrade from 27 to 28 to 29, and so on.

Good Morning Scannerman :-) ☕
My hardware have become old. and since I'm on long term sick leave i cant work.. And the work i still do is mostly legal stuff that is on voluntary bases for those in the same situation as me, or for my own work.
Ethical hacking and building my own AI is to do something fun and also i need that AI for some legal stuff i need to solve to get my situation better and i might get me economical compensation for the deep hole i ended up in.
Yesterday i actually thought of where to post if someone wanted to donate either a one Nvidia 32GB card or the server ones V100/A100/H100 models. And a motherboard with 4 or more PCIe x16 slots and 16GB ram and a CPU 8gen-10gen DDR4
My setup i have is ages now even if it is a big setup, it is old.. My server is from 2013.. My file server the same year. My network is hardware from 2007 built 2009
I have two computers that is "modern" One desktop i3 8Gen 32GB ram, but only one x8 pcie slot, so it cant handle a graphic card. Then i have one laptop i7 8gen 16GB ram.
So no hardware for a serious AI setup. I can run the small 3B to 7B models as best on two laptops that one have 4GB Nvidia and one 6GB Nvidia.
So if i turn back time to 2014.. i had modern stuff.. But nothing have been upgraded since i got sick. :-)

So I'm glad you got all that stuff and can help those around you. :-) :-) :-)
The catch in my case is that if anyone wants anything they have to come and get it. I'm in the middle of noman's land, surrounded by lakes, forests, and rivers. The only reason tech is so advanced where I live is the oil industry. Alberta has plenty of oil.

I saw your heads up notice on Linux Mint. I'll have to check that out. Boys names, girls names... I name all my Linux installations after birds of prey. I name my Windows installations after Greek Mythological figures. I named this laptop Eris. Flaco is an owl. You can look him up online. He has a tragic history but when you read about Flaco you just know he was a Freedom Fighter.

A 'cluster' implies that they are all on at the same time - mine aren't. Only the file sever stays on 24/7. Typically I'll use maybe one or two of the others at any one time. It's more like a small company's peer-to-peer network with users that pop in and out from time to time...

Didn't get to bed until well past 3am, usually I'm all done with updates/cleanups/backups around midnight.....

Oh look what Linux Mint have in store as a Christmas present (@labeeman may want to take note).

I'm just joking with you, as i have seen your laptop setup, when you posted a picture on all of them on the coffee table and all was on then..
So i was just playing on that one as a data center cluster. ;-)

That is late for being you, as you have started to get to bed a bit earlier nowadays then just last year. :-)
I'm glad you got everything in order, to the next time :-)

I have not use Mint since 18.3.. when 19 came out i switched to LMDE3. But my mother is on Mint.... and i need to upgrade that one. :cautious:

Yeah, and even if you could ship it, it would not be free to ship things all the way to Sweden. :-)

I never "name-name" my installations. The computer name is as boring as the manufacturer model number...
Easy way to remember what PC-hardware is in the network. :-)

I have even shorter computer names as a73s, 840, 3010, 3110 etc. And as i only using network drives, i never see the computer names unless I'm troubleshooting something :-)
I dont have wifi, so i have cables to everything.. But as they always stand on the same place the cables is "hidden" so i dont trip on them anyway. :-)
And as my laptops cant run for many seconds without the adapter so they need that cable.. so one or two cables dont make any difference so it is worth looking at wifi so to speak. :-)

Good morning Scannerman.

Hopefully progress should speed up now you have created an access path ;)
We've had 4 power outages over the course of 7 days, one per day. Hard to sort stuff in the dark with a flashlight. lol I suppose I should have bought me an inverter ages ago. Thought about it many times. Health, on the other hand, is taking its time returning. I have to go slow whether I want to or not. No longer may I gloat in my privilege of laziness. It's not as much fun when you don't have a choice.

I'm old school too. I hate WiFi. I don't trust it and I don't want it. I prefer to keep my radio frequencies on a separate device.

I'm pretty much the same, Josey. I have it disabled on my router. If anyone wants access to it they have to leave a footprint. They don't get to plug in unseen. Kaspersky also provides a rather effective software firewall. I don't quite go to the lengths Marie does but there are days when I'm half tempted to when I keep hearing about my neighbours getting hacked.

Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.

I have 2 6kw inverters 140kwh of batteries, and 13kw solar. Most of the house is off-grid if a power outage hits I do not know it until I go to bed as the clock is still on grid. Been that way for 3 years

Yeah. I should have done the same when I was a younger, healthier man.

i dont hate wifi.. but it is not as reliable as ethernet and it has higher latency.
and also i do live just 50-75 meters from the student buildings to the university where they study different things in IT.. and one is IT-security(red/blue-team) So even if the chance is low the students doing un-ethical things, it is still way higher risk then a regular neighbor hacking you. *LOL*😅

I live in the country, and I have had strangers on my WiFi, and you are right wifi is not reliable, it drops all the time. I had to put my wifi on an allowed list to keep strangers off.

I do not use wifi at all, I have it and if I have to I will connect my Phone to WIFI and in the process I can see all of the users in my area's devices. Mine is PW protected on my router. I am older school:D
I dont even have wifi on my router, as it is a Cisco mid-size router.. But i do have an AP i easy can click-in on my switch if i need wifi to fix someones computer.
But its always physically disconnected from the switch.. its also nice to not have wifi as no friends or relatives ask you if they can use your internet.

I had never built my network like this if i never had studied for the CCNA and needed real hands-on practice to build up large network infrastructure.
Then i kept it for laziness.. "if it ain't broke, dont fix it" But after the move i might not set up it all again. Perhaps i can be normal and only have a SOHO network with a few Vlans...
Bit it is pretty nice with the redundancy thogh with a collapsed core network. *thinking*
