I live close to a Large wooded park and the trees are very colorful. There were 6 deer in our backyard last night. ;-) (y)
You would probably like our little town. The deer walk down our street every day and night. :-)

he system can't even detect if internet is connected or not any longer.. so that is like being back in windows 98/2000/xp when the only hint you was online was if the browser open the page or not. *LOL
Actually you really did have the option of an icon indicating internet activity in the "notification area" (system tray). Of course, it could be hidden at will and sometimes it would hide itself and play peek-a-boo with the user. Speaking of the sys tray, I thought this link would be interesting:

I deactivated it as windows phoned home with that function to let know when the computer is online... If it had pinged 1.1.1.1 or similar, i hadn't care.. But now its part of the windows telemetry to let MS know when your computer is connected to internet.. and it has nothing to do with MS-account or onedrive or any of that.. its pure telemetry..
And as i dont want any tiny bit of telemetry leaving my computers, so i turned it off(turned off = made a ghost-file so the process cant run or cant be repaired by the system), as MS has no business knowing when my computer is connected to internet or not.🤓

Alas there are times when MS "needs to know" such as getting Windows updates. I call them Windows screw-you-updates but sometimes they're important. Putting MS on a "need to know" platform is a wild goose chase. lol

I dont use automatic updates on any of my system. I install updates manually when i plan for downtime. :-) So MS do not need to know. ;-)

When i cripple the system as i do, i have to manually download them from Microsoft Update Catalog.. I have not had the time to figure out to make an on/off switch to scan for updates with a short turn on/off function. As i disable files that run the processes i have to make a script that restore/activate and then deactivate and remove.
I miss the time when windows acurally allowed the user to just flip on/off Manual/automatic search for updates.. I think it was in win10 back in 2016/2018 they removed the disable the update function

@Brink Hi Brink :-)
I hope you have had a good day? :-)

Do you remember-ish around what year it was Microsoft removed the switch in settings to permanently disable check for windows updates?
You don't have to look it up as its not that important ;-) i guessed between 2016-2018ish.. What do you remember? :-)

Yeah.. i remember as it was a few years before the pandemic and just a few H versions in on win10.
I miss that function, as it was perfect to be able to plan for downtime when you had systems that ran 24/7 :-)

There's still a workaround to effectively disable it though.

True :-)
But i still got network traffic to windows update when i did it, so i killed the files that runs the process 😇
But i will not recommend others how i did as it does break the system *lol* 😅

When i cripple the system as i do, i have to manually download them from Microsoft Update Catalog..
Strange. I still have the feature that allows me to manually download updates and turn automatic updates off on the X99 work station.

Admittedly, I use the Microsoft Update Catalog often. In fact, I had to use it in order to get the upgrade to 25H2 on the X299 build. It now runs 26H2 but I haven't checked to see if I still have the feature that allows me to keep automatic updates turned off. I'll check the next time I'm on that build.

You dont have to look, as i dont run Win11 :-) I run win10 LTSC IoT..
My project tread you might have seen about win11 LTSC is on ice now when i dont have time for any of my projects.
But still interesting that you have the switch in settings, to totally disable check for updates and not only to set them to pause.

Right. I forgot that you are not a big Win 11 fan. I honestly do NOT blame you. I'm thinking perhaps it may have something to do with which country you select when you install Windows. I selected United Kingdom for my daughter on the AMD build I'm slowly piecing back together but most of my builds are Canada. Due to security issues I'm not sure if Canada is a wise selection anymore.

I'm not a windows 10 fan either *lol* 😅
Its the Home/Pro versions i really hate.. i hate rolling operating systems.. If its Linux or Windows or Mac.. its the same.. rolling is crap as it change the user experience after every darn uproll :cautious:
Edit.. just one example. How many times has windows update change the start menu on Win11 Home/Pro....... This dont happen on the LTSC versions and even less on the LTSC IoT version.. it stays the same as it did in windows 7 and earlier.. LTSC rules.

So i will switch to win11 LTSC IoT in the future.. if it is 2031 or if its earlier.. that still has to be seen.. But i will be forced to step up when Win10 IoT goes EOL.
Its just sad that LTSC IoT versions cant be legally obtained as its only businesses that can buy that volume license.. I wish MS sold them as they sell Home/Pro

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.
